The beginning of a season can be as vital and influential as the latter stages. Initial struggles
and shortfalls can lead to mounting pressures on clubs, whether it be for title challengers or
survival hopefuls - so the perfect start to a season is important. Soccer City FC looks at the
early aspiring contenders who are at the top of their respective top-flight leagues.
"He can be as good as Drogba," said Grant. "He did a good job until now at the
other clubs, and at the big clubs he can be better. I think Anelka can take the chances that will
make the difference in matches. He knows how to score goals. He has good pace and, in the modern
game, you need three or four strikers in the team.

Barcelona sprang another step towards the Spanish league
title with victory at their nearby challengers Villarreal. The 2006 champions were forced to
overturn a one-goal deficit as Cani chipped Villarreal into the lead, but Malian midfielder Seydou
Keita threw the scoreline level and Thierry Henry's volley gifted Barcelona a ten point advantage
to dominate the half-way stage of Spanish proceedings.
It now looks certain that both Samba star Elano and English U-21 defender
Nedum Onuoha will exit this January.
Paris Saint-Germain, Fulham, and Blackburn have all been linked with Onuoha; the 22-year-old
defender could net City as much as £4m.
Elano recently exchanged words with boss Mark Hughes after the UEFA Cup match
against Racing Santander.
The Premier League has announced that the first transfer deadline of the season has been extended
by one day until 1 September. The decision was made between the Premier League, Football League and
Football Association as the date of August 31 is on a Sunday. The news will be welcome to football
clubs throughout England as it gives them an extra day to reinforce their squads before the window
firmly shuts after the deadline.
The concepts of the game are universally renowned at every level, from watching our stars dazzle
the pitch through a flash of virtuosity on our TVs or simply playing five-a-side down the local
pitch with our friends. The ultimate objective? To be triumphant through scoring as many as goals
as possible and thereby beating the opposition.
Hull City fueled by the Samba skill of attacking midfielder Geovanni is the surprise club of the
2008-2009 Premiership campaign. The Brazilian has scored 3 goals in 5 matches thus far including
Hull's first-ever Premiership goal against Fulham. His most recent, a 30-year free kick at White
Hart Lane, cost the Spurs 3 precious points.

The fixture can hardly be regarded as the most alluring of the weekend ties in the Premiership, let
alone on the season's calendar but this encounter was fascinating beyond the apparent face of just
another top-flight contest. Here we are presented with two entirely contrasting football clubs
that, forgetting their respective histories, have endured an indifferent 2008/2009 season that
would leave any well-respected pundit gawping at in disbelief.

Seven rounds in and where do we stand? If you're Liverpool or Chelsea, then you're standing at the
top of the mountain, looking down. If you're Hull, then you're on cloud nine, looking over your
shoulder and enjoying the ride. And Bolton? What of the Wanderers through these first seven rounds?
Rumours may have re-surfaced around Xabi Alonso's future at Liverpool, but an extended presence in
the starting eleven has brought on a completely different effect than what may first spring to
mind. Alonso, one of the games finest footballers known for his vision, distribution and
astonishing array of goals, has been a recurring victim of the dire aspect of defending – but
Liverpool will not want this to end just yet.

There are delayed showings of this match and I give it a ‘must see' rating.
After the big signing of Robinho and the fantastic win over Portsmouth that
followed, (seems such a long time ago and now a blurred memory) we've been finding ourselves asking
yet again "What's happened?
The post-match analysis of the Manchester City Premier League matches will start
again tomorrow, which I am delighted to announce. For those visitors unfamiliar with the previous
writeups, Soccer City FC will be delving into the on-and-off pitch affairs at
Manchester City after every league match for the remainder of the Premiership season and beyond.
Firstly I would like to say thanks to Sean for letting me join the crew here and hopefully I'll be
posting as much as I can!
I'm a life long supporter of Newcastle and a while back it seemed like it was all going good, in
the Champions League, with Sir Bobby at the helm and a chairman happy to help his
manager with money.
