The semifinals of the Champions League get started tonight with the first leg between the Puerto Rico Islanders and Cruz Azul. I'm not sure if I'll be able to liveblog due to work obligations, but I know that Medio Tiempo and (perhaps) Fútbol Boricua will have live updates. Kickoff times are in Arizona time, which now resides in the Pacific time zone (Arizona has no daylight savings time).

When Grêmio of Porto Alegre won the Copa Libertadores in 1995, World Soccer magazine had a story on the final entitled, "Gremio, weakest of the strongest". It referred to the fact that Grêmio had mediocre campaigns in 1994 and 1995 and was only able to win a Copa Libertadores spot by winning the Copa do Brasil.

After eight months and 76 matches, we've come to the end of the inaugural CONCACAF Champions League. Atlante have a 2-0 aggregate lead over Cruz Azul and will seek to wrap up the series and secure their place in Abu Dhabi for the FIFA Club World Cup later this year. I won't be able to liveblog the match, but consider this to be an open thread on the match.

I wasn't planning on liveblogging tonight's match, but I'm here and it's on, so let's go: Atlante 0-0 Santos 18' (1-2 agg.) Commentary after the jump. 1924: Great movement again on the right from Atlante, and Pereyra's strike crashes against the crossbar! 1918: That could be a huge moment, as the goal would have given Atlante the lead in the tie.

[This is the third and final part of a review series of the 2008-09 CONCACAF Champions League.] I'm not the best at selecting a complete Best XI...well, goalkeeper and the midfield positions forward are relatively easy, but the defensive positions are more difficult. But given the amount of coverage I've devoted to the Champions League, I should at least attempt to give my best eleven for the sake of completeness.

[This is the second of a three-part review of this season's CONCACAF Champions League.] The Champions League represented not only a new frontier for the clubs in the region, but also for CONCACAF. Never before had it organized a competition of such scope, complexity, and length before. There were a few hiccups, but overall the competition went very well for an inaugural edition.

After a two-week hiatus, it's time to decide who will advance to the first Champions League final. Puerto Rico and Cruz Azul meet in the first semifinal tomorrow night, with Puerto Rico holding a 2-0 lead from the first leg in Bayamón. The Islanders have drawn the best possible Mexican opponent as far as they're concerned -- Cruz Azul are bottom of their group in the Clausura and have been especially suspect in defense.

The New York Red Bulls are having an absolutely wretched MLS season. They are rock bottom on 10 points from 21 matches, 17 points behind the eighth and final playoff place. What makes the Red Bulls' situation more precarious is that the eighth placed team, Colorado Rapids, have three matches in hand and could stretch that gap to at least 20 points or more.
