What you all saw was the Frustration of ten years by Mexico not winning on American soil thru
Friendly matches, World Cup Qualifiers and Gold Cup matches, finally being put to rest. But sadly
it wasn't from their tactics or run of play that got it all started. This was a single call that
turned the entire match around and when you hope to see the players settle it on their own without
the interference from the referee, that's when it all went downhill very, very fast.
PR isn't supposed to matter this much.
Yet, here I sit, utterly mortified by the United States' utter capitulation to Mexico in the Gold
Cup final. No matter how much I keep telling myself it doesn't matter or it hardly counted, I just
cannot get over the fact those guys embarrassed themselves and the US program as a whole out there.
It was a result that nobody expected, especially after the way they played in the first two
games. But the U.S. men's team heat Egypt 3-0 on Sunday, and that combined with Brazil's 3-0
thrashing of Italy means the U.S. is in the Confederations Cup semi-finals where they will play
Spain. Spain are the European champions who are on a 35 match unbeaten dating back to a November
2006 exhibition loss to Romania.
Brazil go through the motions
On Sunday, Holders Brazil take on the USA in the final of the Confederations Cup in the Ellis
Park stadium in Johannesburg.
Brazil have won the competition twice (97 and 2005) and a third win would make them the most
successful side in the tournament's brief history.
The faultlines between Julio Grondona and Diego Maradona could deepen if these two cult of
personalities square off on the potential inclusion of Juan Roman Riquelme to the national
team.
Like Steve McLaren call up of David Beckham in England's faltering Euro 2008 campaign, Riquelme
is on Grondona's lips because the Albiceleste are approaching a crisis point under Maradona in
their World Cup quest.
FC Dallas has just sent out a press release with the following news:
FC Dallas General Manager Michael Hitchcock announced today that team has acquired
defender Ugo Ihemelu from the Colorado Rapids in exchange for defender Drew Moor, the team's
natural second round pick in the 2010 MLS SuperDraft and allocation money.
Be it a clash in the World Cup finals or a domestic under-17 game, Argentina versus Brazil
always gets the pulse racing. The two nations line up this weekend in the north of Argentina for a
match which holds the key for the hosts making it to South Africa for next year's World Cup.
The two proud countries have enjoyed contrasting fortunes ahead of this clasico.
The FIFA World Cup 2010 welcomes Chile to South Africa after they qualified in an
impressive second place. This will be the first time they have qualified for the finals since 1998
(they were banned from qualifying for 1990 and 1994 after their 'keeper feigned injury during a
qualification match against Brazil).
Soccer America's Ridge Mahoney previews the FIFA Confederations Cup Final between the USA and
Brazil.
After conceding two goals in the first 20 minutes and losing Sacha Kljestan to a red card in
the 57th (in their group play match versus each other), the USA did manage to hit the crossbar
twice - Conor Casey and Benny Feilhaber - late in the match.
