The sport of football (or soccer as it's known in the US and Australia) holds a World Cup every
four years.
Sadly, my own national team, Northern Ireland, hasn't reached the World Cup Finals since 1982, and
despite the recent goal-scoring feats of David Healy, we don't look like doing so anytime soon.
The US MNT's blog continues their countdown to the 500th American international match by asking
about the best goals in US men's history. With 665 from which to choose, this could take some time.
Or then again, maybe not.
Here is my top three:
1. Paul Caligiuri - 1989 World Cup Qualifier vs.
Diving is an art. When done well, it can frustrate the opposition and lead to dubious goals.
When done poorly, it can complicate matters for your club, cause cards to be shown and lead to
suspension and head-shaking aggravation.
Today, I present to you the 10 Best Dives of the 2006 World Cup .
Wow, a huge upset in the first round of European World Cup qualifiers as Austria beat France 3-1.
When you look at those lineups, there is no way that France should not at least have come out of
Vienna without a draw, and even that would have to be considered an upset. I am sure that the
pressure is now squarely on Raymond Domenech, but it really should be on the French FA for keeping
Domenech after the debacle that was the French performance at Euro 2008.
CONCACAF president and FIFA vice president Jack Warner tried to keep the players of Trinidad and
Tobago's 2006 World Cup squad from their rightful payday, but in the end a London arbitrator, like
most judges do, ruled against Warner.
At issue was the complete disregarded for law that the T&T FA and Warner showed for the players.
The following dive (courtesy of the Offside and Off the Post) from a Columbian league game got me
to thinking: What are some of the worst dives in World Cup history?
First off, the dive in the Columbian league game, perpetrated by Atletico Juniors' Emerson
Acuna.
Are you kiddin' me?
In the buildup to Wednesday night's South American clásico between Brazil and Argentina in
Belo Horizonte for the 2010 World Cup Qualifiers, the Argentina camp has been rocked by suggestions
of a division in the squad. Not entirely surprisingly, Boca Juniors' Juan Román Riquelme is at
the heart of it, but the identity of the [.
I've been away from the blog for a bit too long. That's life.
So today, Day One of a little project I'm going to undertake, where I post on the blog for 31
straight days. So dear reader, stick with me.
Today's big news, besides the ongoing transfer talk and the huge acquisition of Manchester City by
a United Arab Emirates business group concerns the accusation of match-fixing at the 2006 World Cup
in Germany.
In yesterday's post, we talked about allegations that the 2006 World Cup match between Brazil and
Ghana was fixed.
Today, a strong statement by the Ghana Football Association (GFA), who say they are going to take
legal action against Canadian author Declan Hill and his publishers over claims the Black Stars
2006 World Cup clash with Brazil was fixed.
Talk about instilling confidence in your team ...
Ivory Coast coach Vahid Halihodzic told reporters today that his Ivory Coast team is at best
'average'. The Bosnian trainer took charge of the Elephants in May and has won three and drawn
three in his six games in charge.
Many people feel that after their showing at the 2006 World Cup and their semi-final run at the
2008 African Cup of Nations, the Ivory Coast is poised for big things.
