By Clemente Lisi – NEW YORK, NY (May 16, 2012) US Soccer Players -- Guy Newman is one of those
who played in both the outdoor and indoor version of the sport in this country throughout the 1970s
and ‘80s. Like many who played in the original North American Soccer League, Newman had to
transition and play indoors when the outdoor pro league folded.
The launch of the new Liverpool home kit has prompted an angry response from a number of the
families of those killed in the Hillsborough disaster.
The club's home shirt for the 2012-13 season, designed by American company Warrior, was revealed on
Friday.
Fans have welcomed the design, but the decision not to consult some families over the decision to
move the symbol honouring the dead, has angered many.
Despite losing 2-0 to Manchester United on Sunday, Swansea City have had a tremendous first
season in the Premier League, playing entertaining football and staying comfortably out of
relegation danger all season. So, perhaps inspired by Hartlepool's Smurfs, Swansea manager Brendan
Rodgers has asked the club's fans to wear something special for their final match of the season at
home against Liverpool.
West Brom manager Roy Hodgson has been given a four-year contract to take charge of the England
team and serve as primary scapegoat/punching bag and The Sun ensured that the job began right
away.
"I would hope if I was offered the England job," Hodgson told The Sun two days ago, "it would be
with the backing of the important people — the fans and media.
There was a time when opposition fans were too scared to come to Old Trafford in any significant
numbers due to the knowledge that United fans were famously inhospitable towards visiting
supporters. If you ever watch a re-played United match from the 1970s on ESPN classic or ITV4,
that was played at Old Trafford, you'll notice [.
Kettering Town are going back in time in a bid to overcome their current financial woes. The Nene
Park side are donning a retro 1970s kit for Saturday's match against Stockport County. The theme

Tangerang police have announced they will no longer give security clearance for Persikota or
Persita games at the Benteng Stadium.
The teams haven't met in top flight football for many years but their fans continue having a pop at
each other as well as the people who live near the stadium. The clubs have done nothing to stop the
disturbances, in echos of English football in the 1970s they don't feel they are responsible, while
the police recently got involved in checking the lengths of skirts worn on match day by girls.
There's not much you can do about it when you meet a side much better that you are, other than to
just take it on the chin and move on. Joe Bugner fighting Mohammed Ali in the 1970s That was
basically the case on Saturday, when Spurs played the best they have played all season, and

The Luis Suarez and Patrice Evra racism row took an unexpected bizarre twist today as this footage
of Evra using the n-word emerged. In footage from a French TV documentary about Monaco's 2004
Champions League adventure, Evra is seen referring to opponents Chelsea as "motherf***ing n***ers".
He also calls Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink a "motherf***er" and [.
No, not me. CONCACAF announced that Tim Howard has been promoted from deputy general secretary to
acting general secretary of the confederation. He was previously involved with the original North
American Soccer League in the 1970s and early 1980s, and held executive marketing positions with
Ohlmeyer Communications (formed by fomer sports television producer Don Ohlmeyer) and the NBA
before joining CONCACAF in 1998.
I promised you a look back at the Dutch presence at Euros in the past, right? We feel the 1988
tournament was the only one that that ever counted, right? It's indeed strange how in the 1970s and
early 1980s Holland couldn't make an impression in Europe. While Ajax, Feyenoord, [read more]
Showing that chunky lads can cut the mustard in the top flight 1. Grant Holt (Norwich) He's a big
unit. When he had his moustache he looked more like a rogue DC from a 1970s police drama than a top
footballer. Nonetheless, he's proved he can score in the Premier League. 2. Jonathan Walters

Got, Not Got: The Great Esso Football Badge Scandal of 1971
Never mind Watergate, or the oil industry draining dry developing countries dry of their oil for
tuppence, or Leeds United getting cheated out of the European Cup what we're talking about here is
real scandal, 1970s style.
Got, Not Got: You Too Can Go To Bed With George Best Shock
Now here's an offer you don't get every day it's your chance to hit the sack with 1970s sex god,
boutique owner and noted footballer George Best of Manchester United and Northern Ireland fame.
What's more, Alan Ball, Bobby Moore and Gordon Banks come as a special bonus a dream Christmas gift
for the lady football fan who previously imagined she had everything.
When I was writing about the evolution of the football programme a few weeks ago I mentioned a
Hibs v Liverpool Fairs Cup programme from December 1970 that carried an interview with Bill
Shankly.I can't remember seeing an interview with a visiting manager in a programme before.
German club Allemania Aachen now play in the splendidly modern New Tivoli Stadium, but their
home between 1928 and 2009 was the original Tivoli Stadium, which still stands as pictured above in
August this year.
Alemannia Aachen enjoyed considerable success in the 1960s, shortly after Tivoli's capacity was
increased, Bundesliga runners-up in 1969.
Lionel Messi presents adidas F50 adiZero micoach boot

colours, weights and designs to extract the absolute maximum from striking a football.

The news that John Terry has been included in England's preliminary 23-man squad for the
forthcoming friendlies against Sweden and Spain leaves manager Fabio Capello with a huge decision
ahead of the naming of the final squad on Sunday.
Capello is to consult with senior FA figures over Terry's fate yet while the allegations of
racism in last month's match against QPR hang over Terry there can surely only be one conclusion to
these meetings.
In comparison to the club's 1970s heyday, the past twenty years have been tough on Derby County -
the club experiencing a slow backsliding into quarters of the lower leagues largely uncharted by
the mainstream press. But, where success has been achieved, it has often been at the least expected
moments.

Germany coach and former 1970s catalogue model Joachim Loew has seen his lucky blue cashmere
sweater sold to retail magnates Galeria Kaufhof for a cool €1 million on behalf of a children's
charity (the deal actually took place last year) and, in turn, the sweat-stained pull-over has now
been donated to the DfB's new German football museum, which is set to open in Dortmund at some
point in 2014.
Celebrating 40 years of John Motson: Top 10 Motty moments video special
John Motson is celebrating 40 years at the BBC. The veteran broadcaster has been the voice of
all the big football moments since he shot to fame in the early 1970s thanks to Ronnie Radford's
winner for Hereford against Newcastle.
Why Swansea's first Premier win united a shattered community
Toward the end of the 1970s, Barnsley Football Club manager and former Leeds striker Allan
Clarke took his squad of lower-league journeymen down the mineshaft of one of the many South
Yorkshire collieries.
Why Torres abuse shows football fans now have the X Factor mentality
I loved standing on the terraces of the Stretford End and the Kippax in the 1970s and Eighties.
I loved it for the anonymity you got from being part of the crowd. I loved it for the opportunity
to become lost in the tribalism of the occasion.
I wish I could take credit for finding this video of Pia Sundhage playing the guitar and singing a
Swedish Joan Armatrading-ish track. My archive isn't that deep, however. So we owe a big thank you
to Jen O'Neil of She Kicks (via twitter @SheKicksdotnet) and also @DandalBs, who explained that
this is a "happy revolutionary song from the 1970s" and shared the following translation (of the

Willem van Hanegem and Ove Kindvall vs Celtic in 1970s European Cup final.
Johan Cruyff was the visionary renaissance man in the 1974 team. Neeskens the 300 / Gladiator
like Warrior. Rep the Golden Boy scoring the goals. Rensenbrink the elusive snakeman. But Van
Hanegem was the brains behind it all.
So, this morning I wanted to read "tout sur les Bleues," in preparation for this much anticipated
match against Germany.
I was so absorbed in the football, it took me a few minutes before I noticed the leg action on the
right and left margins. This appears to be part of a publicity for the team - "the legs know how
evade one's marker.
It may have escaped your attention, but it is the FA Cup final on Saturday. Manchester City and
Stoke City will take the pitch at Wembley on Saturday afternoon, with both clubs looking for their
first major trophy since the 1970s. With shameless nostalgia in the back of our minds, then, it's
time to take a look back at six terrific FA Cup finals unless your team happened to be on the
losing side, that is from the days when Cup Final day was the crowning glory of the domestic
season.

This Week in Soccer History: 1976 - Ace comes for the Kicks
On April 26, 1976, the Minnesota Kicks signed South African great Patrick "Ace" Ntsoelengoe for
their inaugural season. During that season, Ace went on to score five goals in his first five games
and became an instant fan favorite for amazing footwork on the field and his shockingly shy
personality off of it.
When it comes to games between Spurs and Wigan there isn't a great deal of ‘previous'. No
obscure league cup ties from the 1970s crop up, so at the risk of being obvious when you think of a
memorable win over Roberto Martinez' men, there's only one place to go.
On 22nd of November 2009, Wigan travelled to the Lane and what happened that day astonished
every single member of the crowd.
A party of Liverpool supporters has been in Germany this weekend for their fifth 'friendship visit'
to Moenchengladbach to once again consolidate and enhance a very special friendship that goes back
over 30 years.
Fans of the Reds and Bundesliga club Borussia Moenchengladbach established strong links following
the teams' meetings in European competition during the 1970s.
The way Barcelona plays when it is one of their best days, is just like Harlem dream basketball
team in the late 1970s. Messi, Xavi and Iniesta did big show of magic while Arsenal joined the
crowd and preferred to enjoy the show, rather than to disrupt it.
The first goal explained it all: attack with quick passes to penetrate from the middle, a lot of
pressing by the midfield and extra-ordinary day for Messi.
Crazy keepers exist in all periods in all countries. This one from a very old Saudi local derby at
the end of the 1970s. Notice that Revilino did the assist of the goal. For a reason or another, the
keeper decided to do acrobatic jump while trying to make the save
another crazy (but competent) Saudi keeper, Mohammed Al-Doyaee, doing kinda of double-kick save in
a friendly vs.
In the 1970s, teams from the North American Soccer League refused to participate in the US Open
Cup, an understandable decision given the gulf in class between NASL teams and the amateur sides of
the Open Cup, but a missed opportunity to fully integrate themselves into the US soccer structure.
Today's version of the NASL is a pale comparison, but the USSF ruled that NASL teams would not be
eligible to compete in this year's Open Cup.
It's incredible to consider that in the European Cup semi-final of 1975, Leeds United played
Barcelona. Of course, Leeds were massive in the 1970s and have since fallen in recent years, but
it's still remarkable to consider that the two clubs played each other on a massive stage.
In the above video (the first part of a three part series), you can watch the highlights from
the first leg of the European Cup (later to become the Champions League) semi-final from Elland
Road in Leeds in a superbly entertaining match.
MANCHESTER, England — Neil Young, a striker in Manchester City's trophy winning teams of the late
1960s and early 1970s, has died aged 66 from cancer, the English Premier League club announced
Thursday. Young, who scored the winning goal in the 1969 FA Cup final, was also a member of the
City side that [.
Darren Bent discusses the inspiration behind his many tattoos with Umbro as
they launch their new Diamond Icons range inspired by the iconic ‘taping' that
featured on some classic kits in the 1970s.

Kenny Dalglish is hoping today's Merseyside derby is the first step on the road to glory for young
Liverpool fans.
The Reds boss, who returned to the Anfield hot seat last weekend, previously played and managed
Liverpool during the all-conquering era that older supporters love to reminisce about.

Alan is such a desperately British name, and so it's no surprise that most of the greatest
football Alans have hailed from these shores. Here's our pick of the greatest Alans in football
