Arsenal are thought to be in the hunt to sign American wonderkid Charles Renken after the
14-year-old impressed at a trial with the Gunners. The teenage sensation is one of the hottest
young properties in the game and is also understood to have trained with Reading and German side
1860 Munich. Born in Zambia, Renken was adopted [.
Josh Wolff's return to the Kansas City Wizards and MLS in general is of particular interest to
me.
First of all, I must admit that although I am a rabid American soccer fan, I'm at most a peripheral
MLS fan. Some of that has to do with the fact that I live in Germany, and thus I am not putting on
airs when I watch the Bundeslia and cheer for my local team, 1860 Munich (who unfortunately play in
the 2.
I've always wanted to see an American playing for FC Union Berlin again (since Ryan Coiner left
in 2005) and soon it may be possible. Union is one of the über-cool rock and roll teams that
may not always be successful, but has a pretty hip band of supporters (not unlike FC St Pauli).
Red Bull New York fans with heart conditions may want to put their cardiologists phone number on
speed dial over the next 36 hours between the big historic game and the hotstove as more news and
rumors about the team is coming down the road.
Our friends at American Soccer News are on fire today with Red Bulls player transfer info thanks to
a proficiency in German and their Blitzkrieg of stories.
Just in time for today's story about the Puerto Rico Islanders' dual runs to
the USL regular-season crown and the CONCACAF Champions League group stage, they go out and beat
Mexican power Santos in pools of standing water Tuesday night.
Meanwhile, Houston traveled to Panama's Rod Carew Stadium and eked out a 0-0
draw in what MLSNET's Dylan Butler notes is the first of four Dynamo games in four countries over
the next 12 days.
As I'm sure you've noticed, the promises I delivered about contributing regular articles and
even live blogs during my time in Germany were as empty as...well as a net after Cunningham has had
a breakaway. The live blogs were not possible for various reasons:
Colorado: I couldn't get a consistent feed (just like the TFC strikers, but
thankfully one of them buried a deadly set piece)
New York: I was on an 8 hour train ride home from Freiburg, where I watched the
season opener of my other team, 1860 Munich.

Each Monday, we'll check in overseas to see how our two English teams and American players
abroad have fared. It's especially interesting on Europe's frenetic answer to Labor Day, Transfer
Deadline Day (you could also opt for The Guardian's aristocratic humor for your
up-to-the-minute coverage):
EVERTON: Ouch.
It was a good week for CONCACAF players in European competitions in mid-week, with Mexican
captain Rafael Marquez scoring for Barcelona and Honduran star David Suazo scoring his first goal
for Benfica.
Unfortunately, the goal-scoring touch didn't carry over to the weekend.
We looked good for long stretches but couldn't get that final goal (though the foul call certainly
didn't help) to pull back level with Chivas USA. After big wins for Real Salt Lake and Colorado
Rapids, the East isn't assured of five playoff teams anymore. Read the last sentence from the press
release to see how things stack up now.
American striker Josh Wolff has announced that he will be returning to Major League Soccer with the
Kansas City Wizards after his contract with German team 1860 Munich expired.
Jack Bell at The New York Times has written a short story on Josh Wolff's return to MLS.
Here is the key quote: "There was nothing for me in Germany. At the end of the run, they [1860
Munich] weren't going to re-sign me. My wife is pregnant, and we weighed the options. Coming back
made a little more sense .
Much to do today, but I'll try to get through a full roundup:
EVERTON: If you're a fan of the club, this is a welcome win -- 3-2 away to
pesky Stoke with two players (Marouane Fellaini and Segundo
Castillo) making their debuts. If you're a fan of Tim Howard or the
U.
