"So, how do you think they did?" I can't tell you how many times I was asked that in the
aftermath of the MLS SuperDraft. It's the most frequently asked question for about a week from
fans, media, other teams, and even FCD staffers. So I'm going to kill a couple birds with one stone
here and evaluate the FCD haul.
The world of soccer fandom is divided into two groups (ok so it's a lot more than two groups, but
bear with me) those who think uniform numbers are important and those that do not. This piece is
not a judgment one way or another about which way you should fall, I just happen to be a person who
thinks the history and tradition of numbers matter.
This Combine Wrap up is a final review of each player at the MLS Combine. I divide them into five
categories for this exercise. 1. Can't Miss Prospects. 2. Should Do Well. 3. Projects with Hope. 4.
Has a Chance. 5. Slim to None. In each section I will list the players in alphabetical and they
will only include players who participated in the Combine.
Day Two is kinda like Saturday at the Masters. Players stock can rise and fall dramatically.
Generally speaking the team play is better on the second day than on the first and that's true this
year as well, but we also see individual players come up and down.
It's become quite the thing these days apparently to slam the MLS Combine and say it's useless.
(Funny how it it seem the combine is most frequently slammed by people that don't go to it?) The
latest to do so today is Steven Goff.
Day Three at the MLS Combine always starts early, 9:15 AM this year. The idea is that coaches can
get out of town after the games. Although that never seems to happen. Most of them seem to sit
around Florida and do their final evaluation meetings for the SuperDraft then fly straight to the
draft site the next day.
When I sat down to do a Mock Draft last night I got one mostly done, then I realized how stupid the
whole thing was cause I was just guessing on pretty much the entire thing. Some years there's a
dead solid lock for #1, like Maurice Edu for example. This year that's not the case. Add to that
the willingness of the #1 team, Seattle, to trade out and combine it with trader Mo sitting at #2
and there is going to be come chaos this morning at the Draft.
Starting this weekend, FCD players will begin to report to Dallas for their spring training. Coach
Schellas Hyndman will begin the process of transforming this team into one he wants. At the end of
the last season 3rd Degree laid out the off season plan as we interpreted it from talking to the
gaffer.
My gosh it's nice today. Beautiful in the morning and it might even hit 80. I love Dallas in the
"winter." This is a quick report on the first session this morning. There is a second
session at 6 PM and I'm sticking around to watch it. I found some internet at a local coffee shop
and figured I'd bang out a quick report.
