The release of Ricardinho, the latest in a long line of flameouts in the Dallas #10 jersey, is just
another sign that most important number in soccer has been cursed for FC Dallas. Ricardinho is the
latest in a long line of promise and busts leading deep into the history of FCD. The 10, the number
of the soccer gods Pele and Maradona; The Man, the playmaker, the striker, the key player in each
and every team.
It's time for the final report card on the 2008 season. As usual these grades are based on
performance but also based on expectations. Otherwise every reserve would be an F, which would be
silly. Sometimes things that are not the players fault will harm their grade, but adapting to the
circumstances and overcoming adversity are part of what it takes to be great.
It's that time of year again, when 3rd Degree takes a look at the off season plan. This year FC
Dallas has a new coach that has almost unlimited and complete power with regard to the team. The
General Manager held on to his job by the skin of his teeth and had to fire his three highest
profile directors.
I know it's been a while since I done one of these and I hope you will forgive me for that. This is
crunch time for me with the real job and a series of travel days and long production schedules has
prevented me from seeing games in a tiny enough fashion to make some comments worth while.
With little riding on the game and two red cards to really mess it up, it's hard to take much away
from this one. Dave Dir was also right that massive changes are coming to this team to re-make it
in Schellas' image. So really the only things to think about were the Golden Boot and evaluating
Victor Sikora.
On Friday the NCAA College Cup kicked off in Dallas for the first time up at Pizza Hut Park. SMU
was the host school with a little help from FC Dallas. These games are always a load of fun and one
can hope this is the first of many College Cups at PHP. Hey Hitch, the men's College Cup 2010 has
no bids in on it yet!
Great final, two very good teams and a good college game on offer. Sure I wanted to see
Wake/Maryland, but this matchup is a good one. While not the lock pro talent of Wake, both these
teams have a ton of young talent that will end in MLS sooner rather than later. Some of it as soon
as this year. What a great goal to win it as well, nice build up and a terrific finish.
A FC Dallas Juniors player was picked for the U17 Academy...
The Expansion Draft is something we're going to have to get used to over the next few years as more
teams come into the league. 2008 will be like 2007 in that one team is coming into the league. It's
fairly safe to guess then at what the rules will be. It almost certainly will take place on the
Friday following MLS Cup, thus giving teams one week to make trades before the roster freeze that
will come 24 hours before the Expansion Draft.
Normally I would get right to the Good/Bad thing, but since there are no game reports out there
I'll give you some stuff you need to know first. The scrimamge is played inside the PHP stadium
with a full crew of officials. Ferruzzi warms up both teams together but no one coaches each side
during play.
I was updating the Year by Year Page, and I noticed a few fun things I thought I might point out.
Let's call them "Did You Know?"s or "Fun Facts." There are some things that are
surprising about both this season and the team's history.
