Liverpool to bid for £14m man: He’s good but he’s not THAT good!
by Mr Comfort on July 6th, 2008Rafa doesn’t know when to give in, he clearly wants this Spanish winger but are Espanyol having a laugh with their 19m valuation!
Liverpool look set to end their interest in Newcastle’s James Milner after eyeing a second bid for Espanyol winger Albert Riera.Reds boss Rafa Benitez is expected to make a further move to try and take Riera to Anfield after his reported bid of £9.5m plus Argentine winger Sebastian Leto was turned down.
Reports coming from Spain suggest Liverpool may make another move for Riera who is under contract at Espanyol until 2010 but expecting an offer for his services. He said: “In a few days my agent will arrive in Barcelona with an offer from an important club.” Benitez has been looking to add width and a move for Milner was strongly expected but it appears Benitez has moved on to another target. (clubcall)
For some reason every player that Benitez eyes up suddenly have a valuation based on pure fantasy. Efforts to secure Aston Villa man Gareth Barry are being thwarted by an ever rising transfer fee, and Riera is supposedly worth even more! Luckily the Liverpool boss is no fool, his original bid of half the valuation and Leto seemed ample and Rafa won’t go much higher than that, £14m should have been more than enough and yet the La Liga club wants more! Do Liverpool fans think that Benitez is playing the transfer market right by biding his time and waiting for the right moment to pounce on a bargain?

Some of these managers are trying to hang on to thier best players by putting crazy prices on them. I think Rafa should look at some of our reserve team players as I feel there are one or two gems there. Barry ,Kean, Riera are all way over priced ad not worth that kind of money. I would pay that for Hunteelar, Silva, Villa and the like. Kean is the only one out of the other three that I would say could fit in and has a place in the first 11. Barry could end up like Crouch a bench warmer as Alonso is better.

i fink rafa has a grudge against french players .. how can he overlook a player like ben arfa who was on the market this summer and cheaper and he is going for an already epl failure who is more expensive and less skill player like riera..? i bet nzogbia will have the same outcome of barry in midfield and he will be cheaper also, he is epl proven and younger ..can we forget hw rafa was using cisse, a proven striker, forced to play on the right wing… and look at SINAMA PONGOLLE now…. hw he was under rated with rafa and sold for peanuts and look at his valuation now ….

1 is an ARS fan
1 a BLACKBURN
1 supports BARCELONA
And they all say Liverpool will come either 2nd or 1st next season
Also Albert Riera is quality. he is super quick, has top quality skill and has a beauty of a left foot which he is good with at crossing.
Trust me he is good. If you want proof just Youtube him.
Janindra, Thailand - July 6th, 2008 at 11:56 pm
believe me that rafa is right. if you wait until riera is a world class player to buy him, there will many big clubs which will join in chasing him as well. rafa looks at the pential. he is confident that he can bring the best in riera out so let him sign and support him. i think we should support him in this respect.

We need to stop spending big money on these way overpriced players, such as barry, riera and kean. Why spend say 18m on barry when for a little bit more we can get Silva who is probably better and will be around for at least 5 years more! Instead of kean we should fork out a couple of mil extra which we could get by selling a reserve team player such as finnan and then buy huntelaar or villa. Huntelaar is young n would have a great future at the club n villa is only a bit younger then kean but would be unstoppable with torres!
n who the hell is this riera dud? iv heard his old n a has been y would we pay anythin more then 5m for him. forget these older players sign silva for sure n either huntelaar or villa, then we would end up spendin about 45m for two quality players who will be around for a long time!
Carlsberg - July 7th, 2008 at 5:57 am
I agree, Liverpool really shouldn’t spend that much money on Barry, Reira or Keane. I have nothing against the players, but their prices are clearly inflated and they are worth have their value.
I’ve taken this info from footballtransfers.info
I don’t know how accurate the numbers are, but I saw a lot of talented or experienced players who would have cost less than the players Liverpool are targeting. Their position might not suit Liverpool but what I’m saying is, there are helluva number of talent out there who can come up less expensive:
01/07/2008 Ezequiel Garay (Arg) CD Racing Santander (Spa) Real Madrid (Spa) ?7.96m
01/07/2008 Johnny Heitinga (Ned) CD Ajax Amsterdam (Ned) Atletico Madrid (Spa) ?8.06m
01/07/2008 Tomas Ujfalusi (Cze) CD Fiorentina (Ita) Atletico Madrid (Spa) Bosman
01/07/2008 Tim Borowski (Ger) MF SV Werder Bremen (Ger) Bayern Munchen (Ger) Bosman
01/07/2008 Yoann Gourcuff (Fra) MF AC Milan (Ita) Bordeaux (Fra) Loan
01/07/2008 Miralem Pjanic (Lux) MF Metz (Fra) Lyon (Fra) ?5.92m
01/07/2008 Tomas Sivok (Cze) MF Udinese (Ita) Besiktas (Tur) Undisc.
01/07/2008 Romaric (IvC) ST Le Mans (Fra) Sevilla (Spa) ?6.32m
01/07/2008 Amauri (Bra) ST Palermo (Ita) Juventus (Ita) ?17.97m
01/07/2008 Jefferson Farfan (Peru) ST PSV (Ned) Schalke 04 (Ger) ?11.09m
01/07/2008 Alberto Gilardino (Ita) ST AC Milan (Ita) Fiorentina (Ita) ?11.15m
01/07/2008 Hatem Ben Arfa (Fra) WG Lyon (Fra) Marseille (Fra) ?8.7m

Riera?!?!?!?!?!
This is the shambles that Liverpool Fc has found itself in. Scrambling for every last penny to buy players like Barry and Riera. This is NOT why we let the Yanks buy our club.
Parry and Moores: sort yourself out before you become the two men who ruined the greatest football club in the land.

WE ARENT SIGNING ANYONE BECAUSE IF WE DO, WE WILL HAVE TO PAY THEIR WAGES FOR THE REST OF THE SUMMER!!!
The players we are looking to sign, are going to come in with wages of over £100,000 per week…
WHY WOULD WE WANT TO PAY THIS DURING A PERIOD WHEN WE DONT NEED THE PLAYERS?
Pre season will begin for all the current players, and for the majority of our transfer targets too, buying british like Barry & Keane means that the ’settling in’ period is negligable, so you can wait until much closer to the season, before bringing them in.
In Rafa we trust…
2D - July 7th, 2008 at 11:24 am
nothing to do with this story but I have just wikipedia’d david silva and in the part on his club career it says that the signed for liverpool fc for a fee of 19m no word of a lie, check it out yourselves.
adam - July 7th, 2008 at 12:16 pm
rafa has totally lost it this time, throwing money around like a russian!
7mil on a defender who struggled to get into a very average team, and doesn’t stand a chance of playing for his country.
Letting crouch go for 10 mil and replacing him with this man city reject for nearly double that!
get some balls rafa, for the price of your crap italian defender (7m) plus your average midfielder (18m) we could have ribery or villa!!
Bill Vector - July 7th, 2008 at 12:29 pm
2D - Silva has said he wants to stay in Spain.
adam - spot on - this bloke’s a goddamn joke
Degen couldn’t make the crap Swiss team
Dossena has played in 1 friendly for Italy
Both may be good - or, more likely, they will be like Fabio Aurelio
Liverpool won’t win a major trophy again with Rafa in charge. Come back to me if they do. But they won’t. I’m going to watch ice hockey instead.
adam - July 7th, 2008 at 12:38 pm
well done rafe, more squad players. more players to rotate and not give a run games to, ruining team moral, and deciding in march (when its too late anyway) to stop rotating as it doesn’t work. waste what money we have on players no better then what we already have!
is degan better then skirtel or agger? no!
is dossena better than carra? no!
is barry better than alonso? no!
do any of the playes we’ve been linked with look like top 4 players? no!
will we spend all next season relying on nando and stevie to scrounge 3 points from fulham? yes!!!!
Bill Vector - July 7th, 2008 at 12:43 pm
Thank God for Adam - there are too many trusting fans who think fatty beardhead is taking us back to the top - he ain’t.
Dex - July 7th, 2008 at 2:04 pm
Mr Comfort you really needto try writing your own articles and not just reporting the same shit as everyone else. I will tell you something as a FACT now.Riera will NOT be aLiverpool player next season. Anyone with any links to either of the two clubs knows this, all the noises about Riera bids are coming from spain at the moment and all the minor writers with no contacts are reporting these noises as true when all they are is noises made by the players agent and Espanyol representatives trying to raise money from a half decent player. His style of play is not something Rafa is looking for and so he has no interest in signing him. You csn sll choose to believe this or not but I maintain Riera will not be a Liverpool player next season.
Norm - July 7th, 2008 at 2:07 pm
To Dex, he did right an article of his own yesterday, not bad either. See below
http://www.caughtoffside.com/2008/07/06/the-one-player-who-could-hold-liverpool-title-hopes-in-his-hands/
At least Mr Comfort seems to have a soft spot for Liverpool, as for Riera, way to pricey!
Ben - July 7th, 2008 at 5:30 pm
Did rubbish for city why would we want him money oculd be well spent elsewhere i.e silva or keane!
2D - July 7th, 2008 at 8:53 pm
i know he said he is staying in spain im just telling you what i saw on wikipedia you know the trustworthy online encyclopoedia, for the record ive checked it again and its been revised
Carlsberg - July 8th, 2008 at 4:22 am
Adam,
Sorry but comparing a full back to a center back is kind of stupid especially if a player doesn’t play in that position at all.
adam - July 8th, 2008 at 12:05 pm
carlsberg - that wasn’t really what i was getting at. you get my point tho
insua needs a chance, not another season in the reserves followed by a £1m transfer.
carra plays well on the right, wouldn’t mind seeing more of him there
is the fact that pepe has won the golden glove 3 years running not give rafa a clue?? the defense is fine, stop pissing about with it!! its at the front where we’re lacking!
Carlsb3rg - July 9th, 2008 at 5:39 am
Fenerbahce just bought Dani Guiza from Mollorca. The fee is undisclosed but I wouldn’t think he cost much. Wonder if Benitez considered him? and if he would had a good partnership with Torres.
Hah who needs him, we want Barry to our already overloaded center midfield. This reminded me of Tottenham when they were buying every midfielder in the premier league.
starstarstar - July 9th, 2008 at 11:11 am
Not valuable. How about young talent like Udinese’s Alexis Sanchez..or McGeady??? Turan Arda…? or Menez? All are nice winger and active at flanks… Think about that~
