Philadelphia Independence head coach Paul Riley has been named the WPS Coach of the Year.

Riley led the expansion team to a third place finish in the regular season with a 10–10–4 record. The Independence face Washington Freedom in the first round of the WPD playoffs this Sunday.

I don't get to see the reserves live as often as I would like, but as they were playing Man Utd Reserves tonight, I was able to catch the first 80 minutes of the game bossed by Gordon Cowans before the stream died on me. A very good performance it was too, lead from the front by Barry Bannan, who was near faultless throughout.

The familiar theme of tackles also crept up in the Q&A and Arsene came up with a few words that we have heard a lot of in the past week or so:

"There is too much tolerance of bad tackles, I don't like violence, if someone pays £50 they want to see great players who make you enjoy the game"

Its similar to what we heard just the other day and it is something that needs addressing what is interesting is that the questions had to be submitted over a week ago so they knew he would have to speak out over them.

Which was apparently down to another good showing from David Ngog, who by all accounts had a great second half and sandwiched a brace around Lucas' strike from distance.

Arsene Wenger couldn't have hoped for a better start to the Champions League as Arsenal put six past an uninspired Braga side at the Emirates on Wednesday night. "The Portuguese Arsenal", as they are called for their similar home colors, were given a painful introduction to the competition and could do nothing against the Gunners' pace and quality passing.

Jozy Altidore started and played 90 minutes for Villarreal in their 2-0 loss to Dinamo Zagreb in Europa League action in Croatia.

Altidore didn't have any clear-cut scoring chances, but he did draw a handful of free kicks and was one of Villarreal's more active players.

CAF announced that the final draw for the 2010 African Women's Championship in South Africa will take place in Ekhuruleni (Gauteng) on 21 September. In the first half we went 1-0 up and then peppered their goal for most of the half. Just as you see in games all over the world, if you don't take your chances you are usually punished.

Getting knocked out of the Cup by Liverpool is never a pleasant experience, but the last time it happened the event was totally overshadowed by a sickening injury to fans' favourite, Alan Smith.

It's been fun comparing various aspects of leagues. It's clear that in some fundamental ways, they're very similar (think about goal/shot ratios, for example). But in other ways, they're quite different. So, on the topic of punishment in soccer, I've been looking some more at data on red and yellow cards in the four big leagues.

Paulo Araujo Jr's debut for Real Salt Lake was one of those story book, fairy tale, once in a lifetime type of situations. Paulo, Loaned to RSL for the rest of the season came into the Concacaf Champions game versus Toronto in the 74th minute making an immediate impact as he scored 6 minutes after entering the game to leave the final tally at 4-1 in favor of RSL.

I'm going to go ahead and assume that you've seen the wonderful video tribute to the USMNT's World Cup run entitled "Dying Bravely." If you haven't, stop what you're doing and watch it now. There are two shifts in the top 10, with Germany leapfrogging Brazil and England swapping places with Uruguay. The USA's two opponents for October are Colombia (40) and Poland (66).

Rumors in and out of the executive suites of professional and international soccer are a perpetual game of partial information. There is usually some truth, some falsehoods, and some bluffs being run through the press. Arsenal were brilliant, Braga weren't. That sums it up. It's difficult to believe this was the same Braga that demolished Celtic earlier in the competition, but we must give credit to Wenger's side, which made hay against a team that came to play, not kick opponents, and as a consequence hardly touched the ball.

Chelsea strolled to a comfortable win away from home Wednesday in their opening game of the 2010-11 Champions League journey.

Despite some early scares in the game, Chelsea were soon able to cruise to victory thanks to goals from Michael Essien (again), two from Nicolas Anelka and one from Daniel Sturridge.
