River Plate will be facing America in the famous Estadio Azteca tomorrow. The game corresponds to
Group 5 of the Copa Libertadores 2008.
Los Millonarios will be missing several players because of injuries: Ariel Ortega, Augusto
Fernandez, Mauro Rosales, Diego Buonanotte, Oscar Ahumada, Eduardo Tuzzio, and Gustavo Cabral will
all be out due to not being fit.

One game into the season and the Galaticos are already falling. From the Galaxy press

LA Galaxy forward Carlos Ruiz underwent arthroscopic surgery this morning to repair a
slight tear of the meniscus in his right knee. Ruiz suffered the injury, as well as a sprained
medial collateral ligament (MCL), late in Saturday night's loss to the Colorado Rapids in the
Galaxy's season opener at Dick's Sporting Goods Park.
I have to say I do feel a bit detatched from Arsenal over here. Strange, I know, as I'm in Dublin

Two weeks ago i posted after Roma derby loss to Lazio that
"So for now it seems though Roma have coppa Italia possibilities its time for Spalletti to
heal his best eggs and ready themselves for Man utd and only Man utd."
If Roma had not continued to be lured by a Scudetto possibility and concentrated on the Champions
league then maybe Totti doesn't play against Cagliari doest hurt his calf and maybe just maybe
today's result is different.

He had only been in charge a year and a half, so what went so badly wrong?
Under his tenure, Mexico lost the Gold Cup final 2-1 to the USA in Chicago, but that should have
been no reason for dismissal since the CONCACAF bragging rights definitively crossed the Rio Grande

I was at a writer's conference this past weekend so I missed the game but from what I gathered we
played well enough, Heinze scored off a header, Raul scored an outstanding goal and Higuain finally
scored after about a thousand chances. According to most accounts Robben was OK but not convincing,
Sneijder, Gago & Marcelo had excellent showings as well.

I watched Manchester United's relatively comfortable win over Roma last night in the Champions
League and one player stood head and shoulders above the rest for me. No, not Ronaldo, brilliant as
he is, no not Rooney, great player that he undoubtedly is, but the old man of the midfield, Paul
Scholes.
Barcelona took a significant step towards the semi-finals of the Champions League with a
hard-fought 1-0 win away to Schalke on Tuesday night.
Bojan Krkic scored the only goal of the game in the 12th minute at the Veltins Arena in
Gelsenkirchen, earning Frank Rijkaard's side a narrow advantage to take into the second leg.
Before this game (and indeed, before any away game Manchester United have played in the last couple
of seasons) the media trotted out figures to suggest that United were abysmal away in Europe - and
few United fans would have argued against it after 4 away defeats last season (Celtic, Copenhagen,
Roma and Milan) [.

Just in case any reminder was needed regarding the peripheral role MLS plays in the sports
mainstream in this country, a trip to Las Vegas on the opening weekend of the season provided
it.
Avoiding news about MLS (so I could watch TiVo'd Galaxy and Chivas USA games Monday night and
this morning respectively) was disconcertingly easy.
Manchester United won 2-0 at the Stadio Olimpico thanks to goals before and after the break by
Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney. The Red Devils take a vital 2-goal lead into the 2nd leg, to be
played on Wednesday, 9th April 2008 at Old Trafford. The semi-final beckons, and with it another
crack at history.

Scottish striker, Tam McManus, will formally sign for the

Vukovic should go to the Under 23 World Cup, Nick Darcy should not!
Swimmer Nick Darcy, alledgedly smashed Simon Cowley's face. Kieran Squeaky Clean Perkins says Nick
shouldn't go to the Under 23 Football World Cup, known in some quarters as the Olympics, and he
probably won't.
But it has been interesting to hear many many voices in the swimming community and elsewhere
saying, despite the fact Darcy could face ten years gaol, that he shouldn't miss
the Olympics.
Melbourne Victory and Adelaide United fought out a 2-2 draw yesterday in Hindmarsh Stadium. With
both teams missing a key striker (Adelaide are without Bruce Djite due to injury), the scoreline
will provide encouragement for both coaches. Adrian Caceres, who moved into a striker's role
alongside Danny Allsopp, opened the scoring in the 5th minute.
The good news is that many of the injuries of the Colorado Rapids players are
healing in time for the game this weekend against Kansas City. The bad news, for them anyway, is
that it won't be that easy to regain their places. In reality, the performances of the younger
players in the demolition of the Galaxy at the weekend give Fernando Clavijo a
better dilemma than most.

Manchester United eased past AS Roma tonight in Rome with a 2-0 victory in their Champions League
quarter-final.
Many people taught it would be tough for United to come away with the win tonight but in truth it
was relatively easy for the men from Manchester.
Cristiano Ronaldo put United in the lead five minutes before the break after some terrific play
from Wayne Rooney and Paul Scholes.
Carlos Ruiz had surgery today on a torn medial meniscus in his right knee. He is expected

This morning, whilst wading through my daily intake of news and sport, i came across an
interesting article. This particular news piece, found in the BBC's football pages, raised a
question that i myself have been asking for some time, and until now, with few conclusions.
The question is essentially very simple; why have Premier League clubs become so
dominant, or as the this journalist put it, how have they managed to successfully 'conquer'
Europe?

Many have complained, incorrectly in my opinion that Rafa just doesn't spend wisely. Well I think
those people should consider the capture of Fernando Torres as evidence to the contrary. This
latest bit of news however could trump that signing and it could be a signing that takes Liverpool
out of the top four race [.

Many people have labelled the Mersyside Derby between Everton and Liverpool, the friendly derby but
after this week's encounter between the two sides it would appear that title can no longer be
used.
There have been allegations of spitting, punching and verbal abuse in the aftermath of Sunday's

Cesc Fabregas has made a series of bizarre statements that make one question his sanity, but on the

Injury reports came out today and for the club that most people (including myself) rated as the top

Houston Dynamo on Saturday 3-0, the Revs learned that Taylor Twellman's injury was worse than first
thought.

This clinches it: we need to discuss the overage options for the U-23 squad this summer.

McBride on the U-23 squad? Yes, please. He's a great option, and for so many reasons:
1) The national depth pool at forward is seriously lacking; we don't have many quality options.
Surely Gilberto can do a job for someone in the top half of the Premier League? He has only seen

Will Rafa Pool it off? In my last Champions league blog, I talked about Chelsea, Arsenal and Man

I feel like throwing up and am broken hearted. There have been rumors flying around about
Mourinho raiding Chelsea this summer and stealing Drogba, so they would likely to be looking for

Less than 24 hours after the creation of the Major League Blogging 2008 Credibility Table, chaos
has already descended. As one very dialed-in reader so excellently put it, MLS Rumors has
"pulled a Gretna" and have posted a closed sign on their front page. Mind you it is April
1st so this may only be for the day.
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has today denied reports that Mathieu Flamini has agreed a deal to
sign for Serie A giants Juventus.
It comes after reports in Italy claimed that the French midfielder had agreed a deal in principle
to sign for the Turin based club but Wenger has moved quickly to deny the rumours.
If you head over to The Offside podcast page not only can you listen to the latest edition, you

Former Dallas Burn/FC Dallas scoring star Jason Kreis couldn't keep his goal scoring record from
being broken, but he is having no trouble breaking MLS' rules.
i think i may have gotten him in a little trouble this week by asking some MLS folks if it was ok
for an MLS coach to wear a lapel pin featuring a competitor of the League's exclusive apparel
supplier.
Ok, it's April 1st, but Drew is serious about what he says in this video. It's an interesting point
of view from one of the newest owners in the league. I like the way he worked the soccer analogy
and the shots of Chivas USA and Riot Squad members into his whole argument.
You felt it had to happen sooner or later but today David Beckham has officially announced his
conversion to Scientology, even dedicating his landmark 100th England cap last week to Xenu, the
ancient alien ruler of the Galactic Confederacy to whom many of the religion's facets are traced
back to. Reportedly the million year old space-deity (think Bowser from the Super Mario games)
visited Beckham in a dream and said that if he followed his prophet, he would get all his heart
desired.
Those wheels might help their speed a bit, but they look just as flimsy.
Well there are a lot of crazy rumors out there about big name players coming to MLS - but this
is one that I haven't heard before. Robbie Keane coming to join the LA Galaxy this summer!
Keane is a legend at Tottenham, I have a hard time thinking that he would be ready to leave
there to play with the LA Galaxy.

Sorry I was gone for so long... blame it on bad computers, vacation and being lazy. The good news
is that Hugo Sanchez was sacked after all those bad results.
According to Chelsea's official site, Drogs has suffered a recurrence of the knee injury that
forced him to have surgery earlier in the year and has been ruled out presumably for the rest of
the season.
And all you can really say is ... Sh*tttttttttt. Or F**kkkkkkkk. Or Motherf*****.
For those keeping count, this is the fourth time Drogba has damaged the knee diagnosed as
degeneration in his left meniscus to be exact in 2007-08.
With a quality draw over the weekend FC Dallas is off to a solid start on the season. Yes we all
would have liked to have walked away with full points from the contest but against a team many have
picked to lift silverware this season 1 point will suffice (for now).
But that's not the purpose of this post, thus far there has been only tepid support for the
Stephen Colbert for FC Dallas fan president petition.

My Anfield can exclusively reveal that Liverpool FC has decided on a rather unique approach to
diversifying their revenue base and further growing the LFC franchise around the world. Football is
reaching saturation point and new supporters have to be found, what better way than to start
attracting people when they're still babies (and highly impressionable).

Back in February, I took all of you at your word and sided with you when it came to predicting the

It just dawned on me that I have no idea where DC United keeper Zach Wells was when he answered

As in "kick in the" jewels. Frank Dell'Apa writes in the Boston Globe that Taylor

With Floyd ‘Money' Mayweather having successfully entered the WWF ring this past weekend and

Portuguese champions FC Porto have been formally accused of fixing two domestic fixtures in the
2003-04 season. The games in question, against Estrela da Amadora and Beira Mar, came in the same
year ex-Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho led Porto to Champions League glory.
Mourinho, who won the Champions League as well as the domestic title that season before moving to
Chelsea, is not thought to be subject of the investigation.

So I wake up this morning and what do I see,

Is he on the sideline? Is he scoring a goal?
Nope, that's him lining up now for the dole.

Everton have complained to the police in order to draw attention to the abuse targeted at their

Nothing really for me to say that Abby didn't cover in her lovely recap from the weekend. The
only downside to it was the way that Ronaldo and Man U smashed Villa. Love him or hate him, he is

Wednesday's game presents a series of problems to both managers. Arsene Wenger has to decide on
