Jozy Altidore put two in the back of the net tonight giving the US a victory over Brasil and
clinching first place in their group. Over the next few days you will hear alot about how great
Altidore and Adu performed along with several other young players on the U20 team. I want you to
check out Jeff Bull's blog and what he has to say about "Phenom"-onology.
July 6, 2007
OTTAWA (Ticker) - Josmer Altidore made America proud.
Altidore scored two goals as the United States secured its third consecutive first-place finish
in Group D with a 2-1 triumph over Brazil in FIFA Under-20 World Cup action on Friday.
Coupled with Poland's 1-1 draw against South Korea, the U.S. sealed the top record in Group D,
remaining unbeaten at 2-0-1 for the second straight time.

This is a followup to the post I wrote a week ago about pollution in Beijing, where I imagined
soccer players at next summer's Olympic tournament wheezing through 90 minutes in delicious mix of
oxygen and coal smoke. Well, maybe not that much oxygen. The new part of this story involves the
Chinese government leaning on the World Bank concerning findings alleging that pollution causes
hundreds of
You can say a lot of things about the mistakes Real Salt Lake have made since coming into the
league in 2005. One thing you can't fault them for is giving their coach support. They didn't
flinch when others were doubting Ellinger. They stepped up and were willing to open up the check
book to bring some new players in. While it didn't work out, it looks like they're willing to give
Kreis the same support.
The US U-20 team won Group D with a schintillating 2-1 win over pre tournament favorites Brazil.
Much more on this huge victory for the entire US Soccer program later.
Maybe it's the beer talking, but that US-Brazil game was better than any MLS game I've ever
seen. Adu and Altidore are unreal. Apparently, ESPNU is going to cover the rest of the U-20 world
cup, so I have to figure out what channel that is on local Comcast. Regardless of the score though,
this was easily the best game I've seen played in North America that I can remember.
For the first time in four tries, the U.S. had defeated Brazil at the FIFA U-20 World Cup. Josmer
Altidore scored twice as the U.S. won their group with a 2-1 victory....

What a thrilling match. Fantastic. As a soccer fan, I am thoroughly enjoying myself. With this win,
the US is one of the strongest contenders for U-20 World Cup glory. I predict an amazing run
towards the final.
Let's get right into it. In no particular order:
Outstanding players in the first half

-Sal Zizzo did a great job at right wing and his drives toward goal were one of the US' most
consistently dangerous threats throughout the match.
Sorry. this post won't have the typical bite and banter you've come to expect. I had to work Friday
night and spent the better part of an hour to try to find a streaming video of the U-20 World Cup
game between the USA and Brasil in Ottawa. No luck. Seems like I missed a good game as the US wins
their group thanks to a 2-1 win. Is Jozy Altidore the answer to the senior national team's
Despite the dogged claims to the contrary from a certain commenter on my previous post, it's now
been officially announced that Juan Carlos Osorio will be the new Fire coach. It hasn't been
revealed exactly when he'll take over, but we do know it won't be by tomorrow, and Dennis Hamlett
can thus keep steering this sinking ship across the rocks for one more game at least.
Co-host Thailand, aiming to stamp its mark on the Asian Cup, has offered its players a
three-million-baht (US$87,000) reward if they make the second round. However, their spiritual needs
are not being neglected. The team places as much emphasis on meditation and prayer as it does on
physical development with coach Chanvit Pholchovin telling AFP that a relaxed player is a focused
player.
Whats up lady's and gents! Jon here, and I am back in business after a month of technical
difficulties and conflicting schedules to bring you all that is US in the past month. Check me out

Many thanks to all who appended their kind comments to the original post, by the way.
I didn't expect this since Comcast is telling me that "Hot Dog Eating Contest" is on ESPN at the
moment, but I swear I'm watching Adu slice past Amaral (man, that guy is gonna be a king soon).
Ok, I just checked espn.com and apparently this IS a regularly scheduled game - my stupid
Comcast just screwed up the listings. Pretty good action so far!
Just like in Star Wars, there is always a "dark" side to the force. Every goalkeeper has that
same "dark" side to their goalkeeping...you don't have any right? Truth is that every goalkeeper
has a weak side to their technique, it could be that you can dive like a gazelle being chased by a
cheetah to your right hand side, while your left hand side is like a deer caught in some
headlights.
It is time for the big game and I want you all to follow along here. I got a bit of a late start
but want you all to join in so we can follow this game together. Share your thoughts on the game
below and I will get started on the commentary ASAP.

Premiership fans often get a bad reputation of being a fickle, hard to please lot. But new Spurs

Yesterday, the "Starting 11" were announced for the All Star game on the 19th against against
Celtic. Eddie Johnson and Jimmy Conrad were both named to the team. Johnson is tied with fellow all
star, Juan Pablo Angel for the Golden Boot right now, with 9 goals. Conrad is making his 4th
straight appearance in the all star game. This "starting 11" is not assured of the starting the
game on the 19th, as the starting team will be decided on by the all star coach, Steve Nicol.
In the review for U-20 match against Czech Republic, I mentioned our players looked too tight, and
they would probably perform better if they had loosen up.
In today's match, they did that, but possibly overdid it a little.
On offense, there were alot of creativity and individual skills shown, but we weren't able to
capitalize on several excellent opportunities.
Well, like all Arsenal fans,I was relieved to see that we signed another strikerEduardo, earlier
in the week to bring our striker tally up to 4 again after Henry's transfer.
I hope to see some more signings over the next 2 weeks well before the two pre-season
tournaments and the annual trip to Austria. Before Eduardo arrived there were many rumours that
after Henry had gone, there were 2 more strikers planned to come in - a young striker and an
experienced striker!
I was a little late with this news and leak but I figure now is better than never to discuss the

For those not already aware, the Copa América group stage came to an end with Argentina's defeat
of Paraguay last night, and the quarter-finals kick off tomorrow (Saturday). Uruguay (Group A) and
Chile (Group B) have qualified as the two best 3rd-placed sides, and the draw is right here.
Talking about MLS with someone who specifically seemed nervous about getting mentioned in my blog,
we discussed at length something that's a bit of a sensitive topic - the ethnicity of players and
coaches in the league.
Basically, it's my contention that, (although I don't really know all the coaches of the league
personally) no one is looking to discriminate.

Reading around the Blogosphere and especially in the "mainstream" media outlets like ESPN, this

exaggerating a little bit. Even though I was one that stated that the US needs to start fielding
"A" teams for this type of tournament, I can understand the thinking of Bradley.
TA DA! The New LA Galaxy kit has been leaked. Here it is. And here is a shot of the back of the

Well, well, well, a few weeks ago on this blog I posted that I simply could not believe that the
creditors of Leeds United would accept what was at the time one penny in the pound and in my view a
totally derisory offer. Unbelievably, to me at least anyway, that is exactly what happened. More
recently Bates has offered to pay creditors eight pence in the pound.

In this review I shall be listing the top 3 transfers of the week and describing just why the no.1
transfer is going to have such an impact on the Premiership.
It hasn't taken Sven long to latch onto the Man City 'big club' mantra, because during an interview
with the often hapless Evening News, the former England manager and lothario managed to say that
City are a big club no less than six times. It was almost as if he was trying to convince himself
that they are indeed a big club. No doubting Sven was just trying to buddy up to Blues who never
stop telling us all what a big club City are and so it goes.
I wouldn't actually call Matt Matty - though I've heard other players do so. I try to be
respectful, but the name makes me smile, because I know that Reis went to UCLA and there's a good
chance he stopped by for cookies and/or ice cream at Diddy Reise, the local shop right near the
campus.
Anyway, on a more non-silly note, Matt answered questions about the upcoming Chivas USA/Revs match.

When I talked to Gabriel Ferrari about playing for the U.S. U20 team, he didn't seem to have any
regrets about choosing to represent his birth country over that of his parents (Ferrari also holds
Italian and Brazilian citizenship).
However, that didn't mean that he didn't pine for a little bit of what players from other countries
have had at the U20 World Cup - strong support.
So the U.S. is out of the Copa America, the Beckham hype machine is underway, and Gene
Wojciechowski is making fun of soccer, mainly because, well, he doesn't know anything about it.
Meanwhile, over at The Big Lead, commenters are making the argument that soccer is actually

As most of our readers, and listeners to the Major League Soccer Talk podcast know, I spent last
week vacationing in Mexico. It was an exciting time to be south of the border with the finals of
the Gold Cup and the start of group play in Copa America. While in Mexico, I was able to purchase
several Football related magazines and watch several matches on live television.
So you want to get rich? Here's what you have to do. Go down to your local park or football ground,
have a look at some games, pick out a few playes that show potential and then...buy them. Yep, go
up to them and buy all their personal rights for a set fee. If they're young, ask their parents for
the rights, and hey, while you're at it, buy the rights to their brothers, just in case.
While still awaiting to see who will be the lucky winner in the Adam Hammill loan sweepstakes,
it looks as if another young, promising midfielder will be sent out on loan. Paul Anderson is
likely headed to League One side Swansea City. This is sort of surprising, though not really, as
Rafa has praised the soon-to-be 19 year old winger as a possible future first teamer for us.
Quavas Kirk isn't one of those players who is pouting because he's not at the u20 World Cup. He's
excited for his friends and teammates, and hopes to see them do well.
So then after much speculation it seems that Carlos Tevez is indeed set to become a United a
player, albeit on loan for a couple of seasons. The transfer once completed will go down as one of
the most complicated that I can recall concering a United player, but it will by no means unique as
Javier Mascherano has a similar deal at Liverpool.
Under the terms of the deal, the Red Devils will hold the players registration while his agent will
retain the ecomonic rights to Tevez.
He's baaaaaaaaaack! Sven Goran Erikson is officially the new manager of Manchester City. No word
yet on what Noel Gallagher thinks of all this.

Sheikh Russel's slim title hope was further dented yesterday when they slumped to their third
consecutive draw in the B. League, sharing points with Arambagh in a scoreless draw at the
Bangabandhu National Stadium.
Russel, who had suffered their first defeat to the same side in the first leg - a 1-0 loss with
Ugandan attacker Iddi Badambuze scoring the loan goal for Arambagh - were without Moroccan skipper
Bourdif and striker Younes and never looked like the team to beat in a dour match.

The last time Houston lost was on May 26, 2007 at RFK against our own DC United. Since then they
have won 6 out of 7 and outscored opponents 15 to 3. During the same time period United has won 4
out of 6 with a scoreline of 13 to 6.
Houston will be missing deadly free kick artist Brad Davis and possibly the #1 at keeper, Pat
Onstad. DC will probably still be missing Boswell, Olsen, and Moreno to Copa America duty and Kpene
and Namoff to injury.

Major League Soccer keeps their busiest week of the season rolling with six meaningful games on the
schedule. Sure, some of them mean more then others but even those on the lower end of the scale
could still reveal a great deal. Also, this might be the weekend for the West to improve in their
season race with the East as they have three of the five inter-conference matches at home.
With Carlos Tevez in Man Utd as proclaimed, every other club might just as well throw in the
towel. Tevez is on his way to Old Trafford on a two year loan with an option to extend it to three
years. This is a complicated arrangement as MSI the third party and officially the retainer of
Tevez's rights wants to negotiate the transfer.
Except that the Premier League believes that West Ham tore up that contract and rendered it null
and void, in effect, giving the Hammers control over Tevez.
It was good to be reminded last night of why I like watching the Houston Dynamo so much. When

The Crew game against the Rapids on Wednesday was possibly the biggest waste of two hours of my
life since I went to see Panic Room a few years ago. The play from both teams was uninspiring to
say the least, with almost no highlight-reel near misses or otherwise dramatic action. Were it not
for the in-game thread on BigSoccer, I probably would've fallen asleep watching it.
I'm going to attempt to comment on something involving race, a subject that can blow up in one's
face so, so easily. But I also can't shake the weird sensation left by Eric Wynalda's Red
Card/Yellow Card halftime segment for last night's game.
Here goes....
I believe it was the first "yellow card" Wynalda dished and he gave it to the Chicago Fire's John
Guppy for not giving current Fire assistant head coach Denis Hamlett the head coach's job.
Juan Carlos Osorio will be leaving Colombia this weekend and coming to Chicago, where he will be
introduced as the Chicago Fire's new head coach next week.
As I first reported on ESPN.com and SBI, Osorio has left Colombian club Millonarios and is ready
to become just the third coach in Fire history.
I was able to speak to Osorio last night and here are some of the things we covered:
Osorio has been made aware of the possibility that the Fire will be sold, but he told me he is
confident in his ability to make an impact and show any potential new owners that he is a capable
coach.
Somehow all along we all knew that the great 2006 Zidane headbutt controversy would end up in the

I'm taking a few days off to hit the beach. I won't actually be fishing, but I won't be doing much

BANGKOK (Reuters) - A typhoon that has lashed parts of Vietnam is threatening to wreak havoc on
the Asian Cup with tournament officials fearing they may have to postpone matches if the weather
deteriorates.
Asian Football Confederation (AFC) officials say they are confident the matches will go ahead as
planned but are prepared to postpone some games if the players were in danger.
Just a few short things today I have an apartment that needs to be cleaned.
1. Congratulations to Juan Toja for being chosen to the MLS All Star squad.
He's had a great season thus far and thoroughly deserves this honor. His 34.139 (that number comes
from a lot of math) placed him fifth overall in the voting, but there wasn't much support from the
fans or opposing players (Fans, Media, Players and Coaches/GMs each have an overall 25% vote).
No collective power rankings this week; with the midweek schedule so fat and plentiful, all other
schedules seem messy and sideways. Speaking of which, hope everyone had a good 4th of July. Like
the schedule, mine was messy and sideways and dealt heavily with children, fireworks, and some
locus of fear and admiration of the latter.
Amid all that mess - and a 94-degree day passed in an irresponsible mix of baking and gin - I
managed to catch a couple games as well as all the results of Major League Soccer's (MLS) Week 14,
Part One.
The Chicago Fire have chosen Juan Carlos Osorio to fill their head coaching vacancy, created after
the firing of Dave Sarachan in late June.
Osorio, who had been coaching Colombian side Millonarios, has also been an assistant manager with
the New York/New Jersey MetroStars (2000) and Manchester City (2001 - 2006) in his career. He led
Millos to a fourth-place finish in the Colombian spring season, helping the Bogota-based club earn
a berth in the Copa Sudamericana, but has a tough task ahead of him in turning the Fire into
winners again.
You've already been told a million times how David Beckham's arrival will change the face of MLS
and American soccer forever. What you probably haven't heard is that his arrival might change the
face of, well, faces forever.
Here are the power rankings for MLS Week 14 (07/02 - 07/08). Last week's positions are in
parenthesis.
1. (4) Houston Dynamo
2. (1) Kansas City Wizards
3. (3) New England Revolution
4. (5) D.C. United
5. (2) New York Red Bulls
6. (6) Chivas USA
7. (9) Columbus Crew

Due to car trouble, I was not able to make it to the match. Now, looking back, I'm actually glad. I
TIVOed it and watching, I am amazed how little energy the team came out with. I guess the team has
finally given up on the season. Cunningham's goal was great. Esky's PK was most certainly earned
and not a Ruizesque dive like the Toronto PK. Otherwise, another stellar lack of drive and heart
for RSL other than by Jamie Watson who hit the woodwork twice.
This Portguese prodigy shows a bit of the depth available to their U20 squad. Blessed with
exceptional speed and deft footwork, he tormented the Mexican full-backs last night at the BMO with
trick after trick. Recent comparisons to compatriot Luis Figo brought him to the attention of Jose
Mourinho and Chelsea, only to have Benfica beat them to the punch.
Momma said there'd be games like this.
Last night was a good reminder as to why the Dynamo are the current league
champions. I'd say one of the more entertaining face-offs was Ching vs. the Red Bulls goal
post.
You usually don't realize it, but these are the times that deepen your ties to
a team.
Apologies for the lack of posts today but I was finishing off my next ESPN.com piece, which will
be on the best bargains and most overpaid players in MLS at the season's mid-way point. It should
definitely give people something to debate about.
I'll post a link to the story when ESPN.com posts it. Let me ask you, who do you think the most
underpaid and overpaid players in MLS are?
This kid looked the business last night against the Portuguese. His runs and movement were a
constant menace and his penalty was taken cool as you like to give Mexico the lead early in the
second half. Property of Barcelona, his is a name we're likely to run across again soon enough...
Getting ready to head down to Frank Clair Stadium in Lansdowne Park. Biggest surprise so far:
several Canadians tried to convince us Americans that Chad Kroeger and Nickelback were the most
influential and talented musicians to come out of Canada. Hmmm...
Carlos Tevez is delighted with the fact he might end up with Manchester United and the loan
capture, reported to be a 2 year, could be the final piece of the repeat puzzle.
That's what happens when you send second-stringers to a major South American tournament. You're
simply going to have your ass handed to you by the big boys, and, for that matter, the small boys
too. Were I the organizers of this tourney, I'd be rightly offended...

Great game and the Mexican's were full value for the win. Everytime the Portuguese keeper took a
goal kick, the Mexican fans would yell out 'ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

The US MNT dropped its third straight game last night against Columbia in an uninspired
performance against an uninspiring team. None of it comes as a surprise, but did you know this is
the first time the team has lost three straight in six years? Most people in the U.S. don't.
Outside of a certain one-game, hat trick resurgence (let's hope it continues tonight as, what,
the game is on ESPN, not some marginal spin-off no one gets?
Look! I'm posting illicit photos! I feel so..wicked.
The front of the away jersey seems to be the only photo not leaked. The next best thing is a

Good news from our friends at ESPN and USSF - tonights U20 World Cup match between the US Men's

some teams are complaining about the fields in Montreal, Ottawa and Toronto not being grass but
FieldTurf. I can understand the whole argument about tradition and purity of the game, but I
consider us here at the Cupcake Nation to be experts on this topic.
* Ukrainian striker Andriy Voronin officially joined the club today and quickly made himself
heard. The adept finisher said he was 'in awe' of Anfield and also that he had joined LFC to be a
starter and not come off the bench. Uh, this guy is aware that we just signed Fernando Torres and
have that guy Kuyt too, doesn't he? I don't see him starting over either of those two, but
hopefully, he'll make Crouch expendable by January and we can use that money to strengthen our back
line.
Red Bull fans jumping off the bandwagon
The Good news is Red Bull New York lost last night helping to shore up DC's first place standing.
The bad news; Houston rolled over them winning 4-0 and we must face them Sunday. Houston is on a
seven game unbeaten streak and are beginning to look like a championship caliber team. United will
have all of their Copa America players back as the US and Bolivia did not advance.
Although I suspect that many of you reading this are not only familiar with Nick Hornby's

I'd say Fever Pitch has been the literary touchstone for Arsenal supporters. And unlike
other entrants in the Arsenal Celebrity Supporter Series, Hornby chiefly became famous because
of his status as an Arsenal fan.
It' could be a tale of two chairmen if Carlos Tevez completes a move to Man Yoo later today –
apparently he's completing a medical in Venezuela in a deal that could eventually be worth more
than £30m. It's understood that Tevez will join United as part of an initial two-year loan deal
with West Ham receiving some compensation to cover the complexities surrounding his ownership.
Time off is crucial. I'll be back on Monday. In the meantime, catch the U-20's against Brazil

Somebody at Adidas is in a lot of trouble. Or do you think they did this to get more press?
Because if they did, it's working, isn't it?
According to Billy Witz**,
"This image of the new jersey was accidentally posted online. Over the past six months, the look

West Ham have reportedly agreed a £9million deal for Liverpool striker Craig Bellamy.
Welshman Bellamy has slipped down the Anfield pecking order following the arrival of Fernando

However, the Daily Mirror claims Bellamy has agreed to join the Hammers after being offered a

Argentinian 23-year-old striker Carloz Tevez finally landed in
English Premiership Champion Manchester United. According to The Sun Tevez will be in Old

around £110,000 a week in wages.
Carlos Tevez also reported already undergone a ‘pre-medical' to

At 3pm, Manchester City will announce that Sven Goran Eriksson will be their newest signing.
This much talked about move will be given the go ahead when Thaksin Shinawatra declares he is in a

former prime minister of Thailand, to build a 75% stake in the club before an official announcement

Well, that pretty much defines "not with a bang, but a whimper". After a simply awful first half,
the US dominates the second but can't find a finish and is lucky to escape being sliced open on the
counter. I suppose throwing out the "C" team for this match could have made that first half
predictable, but it was still a bit disappointing to say the least to see them fall for the third

GOLTV KEEPS CUP ACTION COMING WITH FIFA U20 WORLD CUP AND COPA AMERICA COVERAGE

Don't get me wrong, Carlos Tevez, and for that matter Javier Mascherano, are world-class players.

You have to give Mark Schwarzer credit, having to put up with management who are too often

Schwarzer thinks it is time to move on, no matter how hard that decision may be. It may be a Bayern

Italian World Cup winner Marco Materazzi has begun legal proceedings against three British papers

Damn, why can't a football transfer be as simple as 'You pay us what we want for this player and he

Some say nostalgia isn't what it used to be. But now that another icon, Monsieur Henry, has left
our league we took a moment to reflect on the finest overseas imports that have ever played in the
Premiership. Our all-star XI is restricted to foreign players that wowed us and then left – with
an attacking 4-2-3-1 formation that guarantees goals and flair.
A big fat ZERO. Yeah, nil points. That's what the USA scored in this year's Copa America, after
defeats at the hands of Argentina, Paraguay and Columbia. Eight goals conceded, two goals scored.
Buy hey, that's what you get when you send a virtual B team to take on the best teams in South
America. Without the likes of Landon Donovan (pictured vomiting up his small intestine after the
US's weak effort) and DeMarcus Beasley in their ranks, what did the US really expect?

Well, it turns out yesterday wasn't a slow news day after all. Compare it to today and you realise
it was a 24hr firework display of news. Today is dull. The Copa goals and excitement seemed to have
dried up. Hopefully this is only due to the final group stage matches being dead rubbers. I'm sure
things will heat up again at the weekend.
Copa America's invited guests from the North, Team USA, are out of the tournament after their third
consecutive defeat. The Americans lost 1-0 against Colombia with Jaime Castrillon scoring the only
goal of the game. [They were already knocked out by the time this game was played - should have
taken Landon Donovan to Venezuela! Ed.] [Via 101GreatGoals]

There's nowt really happened in EPLworld. Most stories are only regurgitated versions of
yesterday's: Chelsea want less in-fighting, Reo Coker to Villa, Sven takes over at city, Criag
Dickhead to West Ham. There's a semi interesting development in Tevez's move to Utd, but that's
about it.

It really is that simple. Beat Brazil (Friday, 7.45 pm ET, ESPNU), and win Group D. That's the only

There's a few articles on Calos' possible move up north. All agree he's a fine talent, but differ
on wether he's right for the Red Devils. Mike Adamson's blog argues ManU need an out-and-out target
man, not another version of Wayne Rooney, and he's probably got a point. No problem says Daniel
Taylor, they'll just be a change of tactics, and it's all part of Fergie's masterplan.

Continuing on from my last post, in which I covered Barca's goalkeepers and defenders.
Midfielders
Name: Xavier 'Xavi' Hernández Creus
Age: 27
Evaluation: Xavi is one of the leaders of the team and the player who has been in the first team
the longest in the current squad despite his relative youth.
Having lost most of the 05-06 season to injury, he was once again hampered by injury problems this
season, although they were thankfully mostly minor compared to what he went through before.
I've had to break this up into 4 posts since it's gotten so long. So here's my evaluations of our
first team squad of 22, plus the technical staff and club management. I'll do another post looking
ahead to the Barca squad of next season once all the transfer business is done.
Goalkeepers

This classic clip shows the hilarious moment when a boy invaded the pitch in a Manchester United

IAN Holloway has admitted that missing out on recruiting veteran striker Kevin Gallen has come as a

There is a reason why Carlos Tevez is perceived as a £20m striker. Every time the Blades
reinstate and subsequently lose their appeal to get West Ham relegated, it serves as yet another
reminder to every club's manager the grievous harm Tevez did to the Blades chances of staying
afloat in the Premiership. A feat that was merely heroic has passed onto the realm of myth, a feat

I was in another room tonight when the first goal in this game was scored. When I heard the
announcer and the roar of the crowd (it was on TeleFutura), I knew immediately it wasn't the US
that scored it.
And now for some impenetrably pompous aftermath. The title of the following article should give
you an idea of where it's headed. How anyone could intertwine today's US MNT young, inexperienced
players in this tournament, acting as guests with the Bush administration's foreign policy is a bit
beyond me.
