Team News & SetupSimilar to last season, manager John Spencer played his 4-4-2. Portland brought in Kris Boyd as a
designated player to pair better with the style of Spencer than Kenny Cooper, who preferred to
drift wide and play on the ground. Boyd arrives as the SPL's all-time leading scorer.
The United States earned their first ever win over Italy in Genoa with an early second
half goal from in-form Clint Dempsey.
USMNT's SetupJurgen Klinsmann selected to his seemingly favorite 4-2-3-1 formation. With the absences of Landon
Donovan, Tim Chandler, Oguchi Onyewu, Jose Torres and Jermaine Jones, the Yank's squad depth was
tested.
Each Sides' Setup
Juergen Klinsmann made three changes from the side that lost to Costa Rica on Friday. Steve
Cherundolo slotted in at right back and Timmy Chandler auditioned at the problem position of left
back. Clint Dempsey came in for Landon Donovan in attacking midfield and Clarence Goodson came in
centrally to replace Michael Orozco Fiscal.
USA Setup: Jurgen Klinsmann set up the USA in a 4-3-3. Castillo was back at left back, and
Timmy Chandler was in at right back, making his second appearance for the USA. Orozco and Bocanegra
partnered in the center. Castillo looked better than the Mexico match for sure, but his slight
build continues to show a cause for concern, as he was troubled with the bigger and stronger Costa
Rica players.
Chicago Fire Setup: Frank Klopas' side continued to show how much they have upgraded in this
dominating victory over the Defending MLS Champion Colorado Rapids. The speed in the partnership of
Oduro and Nyarko up top was too much for the Colorado back line to handle. Without Marvel Wynne's
speed to cover for the rest of the 3 defenders, Colorado would have conceded quite a few more
goals.
The Setup after the Red Card to Borchers
Salt Lake welcomed Jamison Olave back into their defense after returning from an injury in the
all-star match. Chivas USA was coming off a tough midweek loss in Portland and needed to take the
home three points to push towards a playoff spot.
Two Early Defensive Errors In the 11th minute, Jazic played a chipped, blind back pass that
was intended for Junior Lopes.
LA's Strategy Bruce Arena gave a start to Robbie Keane even though he had only arrived at
the club 48 hours prio. Keane took the place of Juan Pablo Angel up top and paired with Adam
Cristman. The 4-4-2 formation placed Juninho and Beckham in the center of midfield and Donovan and
Franklin out wide.
Philadelphia Setup: The Union set up in their accustomed 4-4-2 with a diamond midfield. Miglioranzi
played in the holding midfield spot with Carroll out injured. Daniel played wide left and Mapp
played wide right. Paunovic played in the center behind the two strikers. Le Toux and Mwanga were
the two strikers.
Chicago's Strategy Frank Klopas' side has been significantly upgraded in midfield upon
signing the defensive minded Pavel Pardo and the attacking playmaker Sebastian Grazzini. These two
players are very comfortable on the ball, possess a wide passing range and have the technical
ability to play with a man on their back.
Portland's Setup: Portland set up in a traditional 4-4-2, as compared to their unusual
formation that they used Sunday against Houston. Chara and Jewsbury were the two holding
midfielders. Both were lacking aggression and energy, and it showed as Zusi and Espinoza especially
controlled the flow of the game.
Portland Setup: Portland set up in a variation of a 4-4-2 with two holding midfielders in
Jewsbury and Chara. Chara and Zizzo would take turns moving forward partnering with Nagbe in the
center behind Johnson. Zizzo played wide right and Nagbe played wide left but could often be found
central with Cooper moving out wide to the left.
Toronto's Strategy Aron Winter abandoned his Dutch roots by swapping his 4-3-3 for a 3-4-3.
The formation switch to three at the back is a welcome one, since it is such a rarity in football.
Winter must have thought that whether he played 3 or 4 at the back would result in a suspect back
line, so he may as well play to his strengths (wing play) while entertaining the BMO Field
faithful.
Union formation after 22nd minute
Philadelphia's StrategyPeter Nowak gave Freddy Adu the start even though he had only been with the club for one training
session. The Union started out in a 4-4-1-1 with Adu as the playmaker. In midfield was LeToux,
Paunovic, Carroll and Mapp, while McInerney began as the lone striker.
Seattle Setup: It was clear that Seattle's goal was to control the possession and that they
felt that by doing that they would be able to score a few goals. They created a plethora of
chances, but unfortunately for them their finishing was lacking and they were unable to find the
back of the net.
USA Setup: USA Coach Jurgen Klinnsman set up in a 4-2-3-1 with Michael Bradley as the #10
behind lone striker Edson Buddle. Bradley was not close enough to Buddle, and therefore Edson was
isolated up top. He did however hold up the ball well when given the opportunity, it was just that
his opportunities were few and far between.
