Ben Olsen…retirement?

That Soccer Guy @ 01:42 PM EST

According to the DC United news source the Soccer Insider Ben Olsen is now considering the option of retirement. As the SI said, the idea was thrown around after last season with his 1 appearance last season.

Olsen is DC United. When you say DC United you think Ben Olsen. One would hope that when Olsen does decide retirement is necessary, he will stay with the club in some capacity.

USL Chaos

That Soccer Guy @ 01:24 PM EST

The Tampa Bay Rowdies and Crystal Palace Baltimore have now joined the Team Owners Association (TOA). This has brought the number of teams to 9 for the TOA, who will release a name for the league next week.

This is throwing the USL into chaos at this point. I wonder with this loss of teams if USL will decide to rework the league rules and spending to allow a merge of USL-1 and USL-2 and make it just United Soccer League.

DC United Coaching Search

That Soccer Guy @ 07:06 PM EST

Since I did one for VCU, I thought it was only fitting to have one for DC United. Tom Soehn has decided to step down as Head Coach after 3 seasons, a total of 7 seasons with the club. The DC United job is a very unique situation.

The first thing that will make it hard for United to draw in a coach is the stadium situation.

VCU Coaching Search

That Soccer Guy @ 10:18 PM EST

According to the Richmond Times-Dispatch, VCU has "fired" (i.e., did not renew his contract) the men's soccer coach Tim O'Sullivan. O'Sullivan has been with VCU for 15 years. VCU won the CAA Title between 2002-04 and has not done as well since. Here are my thoughts as to who VCU could look towards.

Changing of the Guard

That Soccer Guy @ 11:29 AM EST

Tom Soehn's term as Head Coach of DC United has come to a close Monday evening when he met with Kevin Payne and the rest of the head honchos in the DC United front office. Tom Soehn did not await the decision from Kevin Payne and left on his own terms.

Now the decision comes down to who is next to step up and be the new DC United Head Coach?

It’s over…now what?

That Soccer Guy @ 10:03 AM EST

DC United saw their season come to a close after this weekend with their draw at Kansas City and FC Dallas winning at Seattle. The time has come to decide what the team needs to do next season. This is the second season in a row United has not made the playoffs with winning the Supporter's Shield the 2 years prior.

DC pulled off the 1-0 win off an Emilio 16th minute goal Saturday, keeping their chances at the MLS playoffs alive. They now share a 4 way tie with Toronto, Dallas, and New England. United must rely on going to Kansas City and must win to keep any chances alive. The guys over at behindthebadge.com broke down DC's playoff chances.

Stand Up for #9

That Soccer Guy @ 10:16 AM EST

As you have probably heard by now, Charlie Davies, forward for the United States Men's National Team, was injured in a serious car accident. Granted he was out past USMNT curfew, he is still a great player and this will hurt the team. During tonight's match against Costa Rica, they are asking everyone to stand up and cheer during the 9th minute in honor of Davies (who wears #9).

Rams fall short

That Soccer Guy @ 11:32 AM EST

The VCU Rams Men's Soccer team falls short once again dropping a 2-1 result against William & Mary Saturday. W&M tied the game in the 90th minute. This has not been a good season for the Rams. Their last victory was at home against the University of Richmond in a 4-3 win. The Rams are lacking leadership on the field this season.

DC United Helped and Hurt

That Soccer Guy @ 11:19 AM EST

DC United was helped and hurt this past weekend as they had the weekend off. Where to start?

Let's throw out the good news first. New England lost to Columbus, meaning New England is sitting only 2 points ahead of DC for the last spot in the playoff race with 2 matches remaining. What also helps is the Revs play host to Chicago and play away to Columbus.

US wins at Honduras; Germany defeats Russians on plastic pitch

That Soccer Guy @ 10:39 AM EST

Der Mannschaft has done it again. Miroslav Klose found the back of the net in the 35th minute to give Germany the 1-0 win over Russia on their plastic pitch. Credit has to go to Adler and his defense to hold off the Russian offense lead by Arsenal midfielder, Arshavin. This was definitely match to watch over the weekend.

That's what DC United will be doing this weekend. The team has a bye this weekend and will only be able to watch and wee what happens with their playoff chances.

FC Dallas has pulled even with United with 36 pts. just below New England who are holding on to the final wildcard spot. Jeff Cunningham scored the game winning goal for Dallas on Wednesday against San Jose.
