Yesterday en Nunez, Boca seemed to overcome the apparent differences in their team that have come
to pass the past couple of weeks. They beat a lowly River team 1-0 in the Monumental with 10 men
after the expulsion of Hugo Ibarra in the 50th minute.
The Good and the Bad
The Bad
River - Knowing that they would be in last place if they lost to Boca, River came out with no
desperation and no creativity.
Bad times continue for the Argentine National team. El "Coco" Basile quit as coach
following a very poor performance versus Chile and several lackluster performances previous to this
one. Its hard to understand how a team with some of the best players in the world (on both sides of
the ball) isn't playing better than they are.
I've been slacking in my blog writing recently. School and teaching is taking over my life. But, I
now have some more motivation. El superclásico (Boca vs. River) is this weekend and I'm very
excited. Even though both teams have been struggling recently, this should still be a great match.
What a wild weekend in Argentina as we saw several ties, red cards, and maybe the best game in
Jujuy. Here is the good and the bad from the weekend.
The Good -
Adrian Gonzalez (San Lorenzo) - The San Lorenzo forward scored two goals in an important win for
the cuervos over Rosario Central.
So, I started school over a week ago and ever since the number of my blog entries has been 0. I've
obviously been pretty busy. So this morning when I got an email from Soccerblogs.net saying that I
was being added to their site I was newly motivated. Here are a couple of things I've been thinking
about this past week.
So, maybe I forgot or just didn't do my homework but last night Argentina played Belarus in
Minsk in a friendly. Well, I really didn't miss much. Despite the presence of first team
regulars Tevez, Burdisso, Cambiasso and Zanetti the albicelestes could not take advantage. The
score ended up being 0-0 with few chances at goal by Argentina.
I've already heard about Chelsea desire to move Shevchenko out of London but it seems that
negotiations are now being made and the move will be made by the end of the week. I read this
story about what Chelsea is willing to do to get Shevchenko to Milan. The offer, cash! One of
the most storied goal scorers at Milan came over to Chelsea about 2 years ago and has been a
complete bust.
Last night I told Beckie that I wanted to wake up early to watch the Argentina/Brazil semi-final
match. I didn't know the exact time but believed it was either at 6 or 7. I didn't sleep too well
and woke up first at 5am and then at 6.
It looks as if Kevin Keegan is high on Javier Saviola and a loan from Real Madrid is in
negotiations. Read the story here. More argentines in the Premier League is always a good thing and
if Newcastle can get this deal done then Saviola will join his fellow countryman Fabricio Collocini
at St. James Park.
Ups -
Tigre - All alone at the top spot after 2 weeks, Tigre showed this weekend that it can beat big
clubs. With the help of Diego Castano (2 goals), Tigre beat Arsenal de Sarandi 2-1 a week after
beating San Lorenzo.
Colon de Santa Fe - Colon followed an impressive tie against River last week with a drubbing of
Gimnasia y Esgrima de Jujuy.
English Premier League -
Summaries of the weekend in the EPL are plentiful. So, I won't bother saying who won and who lost.
I just want to point out some highlights. Some ups and some downs of the weekend.
Ups -
Aston Villa - Gabriel Agbonlahor's brilliant game included a hat trick and a dismantling of Man
City.
The Olympics have pretty much dominated night time TV this week in our house. Olympic soccer is a
different breed. Cared about more in the Americas and Africa than in Europe, Olympic soccer is an
interesting look at certain countries. It's no secret that I am a huge fan of Argentina and I've
desperately searched for their Olympic matches.
Well, it's been a few months and I've kind of forgotten about this blog. I find myself unmotivated
to blog and the fact that the summer in world football is slow does not help. Last week the
Argentine league began. The English Premier League started its new season this weekend. So, things
are now in full swing.
So, my other blog pretty much became all about soccer. I've decided to make a new blog dedicated to
the greatest sport on earth. I will focus mainly on South American and European soccer along with a
few others.
