US Open Cup final preview. Battery vs. D.C. United

0
The Charleston Battery of the United Soccer League's Division 1 take on MLS' D.C. United tonight in the final of the 2008 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.

With its official beginning dating back to 1914, the U.S. Open Cup is the oldest tournament in any sport in the United States. The Open Cup is America's version of the FA Cup by organization as it gives all US Soccer affiliated sides, both amateur and professional, an opportunity to play for the title. Football Week In Review - 26 August-1 September

0
As I sit here watching the start of the CONCACAF Champions league second leg I have to look back at all the happenings this past week in football. This week featured more tournament play, the start of La Liga and Serie A and the close of the fall transfer season for the EPL. The big transfer news is that Man City stole Robinho out from under Chelsea and Manchester United finally got Berbatov from Tottenham. Click to continue reading...

Game Breakers: The Stars of Major League Soccer

2
I just finished the new DVD from Major League Soccer and A&E Home Video titled, Game Breakers: The Stars of Major League Soccer and I've got to tell ya, I was quite impressed.

The DVD was just released on August 26th and so – like Kramer in Seinfeld – that practically makes me the premier! Click to continue reading...

Jimmy Bullard: From House Painter to England International

2
International football has its share of Cinderella stories, and the heartbeat of Fulham's midfield, Jimmy Bullard, is no exception.

According to the Guardian article, Bullard may earn his first international cap for England at aged 29 and he's hoping his persistence will serve as inspiration to other aspiring footballers, who may be cut from amateur cloth rather than the typical early academy development stock which makes up most national sides. Guys, I'm going to leave this up for the next couple of weeks so that you can check out all the action at your leisure! You have to download a Microsoft viewer product called Silverlight, but the the download was quick and painless and the picture quality seems pretty darn good. I'm about halfway through the US v. SPL review 30-31 August

1
The Old Firm derby was as exciting as you'd expect. Rangers beat Celtic 4-2 at Celtic Park in a game where 2 players (Daniel Cousin and Jan Venegoor of Hesselink) were sent off. 2 goals from ex Celtic player Kenny Miller sunk the hearts of the home team, Daniel cousin scored the games opener with a tremendous solo effort. Freddy Adu...Where Are You?

3
Gruffgoat contributor Chris pointed out a glaring omission on the US Men's Roster just announced for Cuba and T&T - that omission is Freddy Adu.

I thought Freddy had a very good showing in the Olympic tournament so I'm wondering why he didn't make the top 20 cut?

If any of you fans out there know what's going on with Freddy or have any theories; by all means share them here. Click to continue reading...

NASA Classic a success

0
For those of you who attended the NASA Classic this past weekend, I hope you agree with me that the tournament was a success.

The field conditions were great and thanks in large part to tropical storm Fay, the weather was awesome for a late August soccer tourney.

Instead of the sweltering summer heat which would normally have been hanging over the players, the weather was windy and overcast – make it a pleasant outing. Click to continue reading...

With another great week in football that saw its end with a great match between Manchester United and Portsmouth, I look back at all that made it special.

SPL Review - 23/08/08

An entertaining weekend of football in the SPl this week.

Aberdeen held Rangers, in the early kick off game, to a 1-1 draw with Rangers having a late goal by DaMarcus Beasley ruled out for offside when he was clearly a yard on. Davie Weir opened the scoring for Rangers in a half they dominated, Derek Young equalised just before the break for The Dons. Click to continue reading...

The quality of this video leaves a bit to be desired but they run it through enough slow motion shots that you will certainly get the point.

Argentina v. Nigeria: A Flashback to 1996

8
The Olympic gold medal men's match is once again set. The two foes are familiar faces on this stage, Argentina and Nigeria. Perhaps it's Argentina's turn to pull even in today's rematch in Beijing; because 12 years ago in Athens...Georgia that is...Nigeria won their first and only international trophy in the form of Olympic gold. Maurice Edu granted work permit

As expected Maurice Edu's work permit application went through without a hitch and his move to Rangers of Scotland is just about confirmed. The 22 year old US international watched his new club beat Hearts 2-0 on Saturday before jetting off to join his international team mates for the World Cup qualifier with Guatemala on Wednesday night.
