The end has come…again

Dear Man Utd Offside blog readers,

I am sorry to say that due to changing circumstances that prevent me giving the time this page deserves, I am ceasing my updates of this blog. It was a bit ambitious to try and bring it back after such a long period of inactivity, but I don't regret it, it was fun.

Swansea vs Man Utd Match Report (Utd swan to victory in fantastically upbeat first game)

The Offside: Manchester United at related • 0 views

Well, faithful legions of admirers, ladies, gentlemen, denizens of the Internet deep, the situation here at The Offside remains as ever it was: something akin to a loyal customer who can never get through to the call centre on high. Nevertheless, he battles on, and that is what shall be happened, at least for the next few weeks and games, after which I will be forced to reassess the situation.

Man Utd vs Wigan Community Shield 2013 (First trophy for Moyes as RVP fires up for a new season)

I said it in the Sevilla report that as far as I was concerned, I would start judging Utd from the community shield onwards. Utd got just two wins on tour against opposition that could hardly be described as world-leading, but that all disappears into the mists of time when faced with actual result-based competition.

Utd vs Sevilla (Ferdinand’s testimonial cast in shadow by sublime Spanish)

In themselves, testimonials are not taken seriously. They are just a nice way of showing respect for a certain player's loyalty and longevity, and the opponent and result are largely irrelevant. However, there were a few extra reasons to take a peak at the latest one at Utd. In recent years, we've celebrated the careers of Ole Solskjaer, Paul Scholes and Gary Neville.

AIK vs Man Utd (Latest tour report and transfer discussion)

First off, let me just say, as we plod along here, that I've not really enjoyed following this Tour 2013. In my view, and comments from all managers seem to back this up, pre-season is the opportunity to 'tune' the team, ensure everyone recovers their pre-holiday fitness as best as possible and to embed young players and prospects.

Tour 2013: Kitchee vs Utd (A rare win for Utd on tour as youngsters shine brightly)

Yes, you read that right, Utd won on Tour. And that means....absolutely nothing. I'd never heard of Kitchee, but they play in the Hong Kong league, which I think excuses me that lack of awareness. Having had the time to keep up with this match with live text feeds from the newspaper, it became clear very quickly that those covering the action were a little hacked off at the station.

Cerezo Osaka vs Man Utd: Draw salvaged by Zaha

The Offside: Manchester United at related • 0 views

The latest tour opposition arrived in the form of Cerezo Osaka, a perfectly capable team from the J-League. It's rather warm over in Japan at the moment and the heat must certainly be helping Utd's fitness, if not their performance levels. Nevertheless, despite scraping a 2-2 draw against Osaka and being outplayed a lot of the time, David Moyes reckons the game featured the best Utd play yet on tour and there were indications that he may be correct in that assessment.

Yokohama F-Marinos vs Utd: Utd fall again to Tour opposition

If anyone paid any attention to the recent Lions tour, they will be familiar with the setup. The Lions play a bunch of 'warm-up' provincial sides before the main feature. That's kind of what Utd's tour is like, the main feature being the real league of course. The Lions actually lost one of their provincial games, something not generally done, before winning the main feature convincingly, something not generally done.

Picture the scene. A pub. 2025. The final round of the Tuesday night quiz. The survivors of the brutal preliminaries: two elite outfits of pub quiz legend. With the scores tied in a dramatic finale, the questionmaster leans forward to his microphone and says: "Which player was the first to score under David Moyes' tenure as Manchester United boss?

Great change at Utd as Moyes makes first appointments

Breaking news....Sir Alex Ferguson retired. I know, I missed that little newsbite too. I bet it was in one of those really tiny sections; you know, the ones where they say Gary Smith has transferred to Torquay for £500 and will be paid in custard creams, or David Beckham's next club will be in the Belize division 2 all of his salary going towards a penny chew.

Manchester United Squad Review 2012-13 Part IV: Strikers

STRIKERS
Name: Javier Hernandez
Position: Striker
Age: 25
Summary: For some reason, Hernandez entered the season with possibly a few question marks over his head. I certainly didn't place them there, I have always been a fan of the lightning-sharp Mexican.

Manchester United Squad Review 2012-13 Part III: Midfield

MIDFIELD

Name: Antonio Valencia
Position: Right wing
Age: 27
Summary: Quite simply an incredible reversal of form for the Ecuadorian in 2012-2013. It may be hard to recall, but the very same Antonio Valencia was voted Man Utd's fans' and players' player of the year for last season, along with Utd's goal of the season.

Guillermo Varela: Moyes’ first signing

Be honest, you were just waiting to hear this news, right? It is reported, and indeed is true, that Manchester United have signed young Uruguayan defender Guillermo Varela. And the first thing you might say is...."I've never heard of him." You would be forgiven. He is signed from Club Atlético Peñarol, of the Uruguayan league, having made, if my research is correct, just one senior appearance for them.

DEFENCE

Name: Rafael
Position: RB
Age: 22
Summary: A coming-of-age season for the Brazilian, perhaps best shown in his growing maturity. Known in previous times for performing rash challenges, as demonstrated on the Paul Scholes How-to-tackle-for-youngsters DVD, but showed significant improvements during 2012-2013.
