It's time again for the annual Carolina Challenge Cup. The Toronto FC squad are currently in
Charlston, South Carolina participating in their final preseason tournament before the 2011 season
kicks off. Canadian Andrew Ornoch has also joined up with the team as a trialist.
On Thursday, TFC faced Charlston College in a friendly game before the tournament.
Usually I'm hoping for news about TFC anytime. Such is my luck that it ends up being bad news.
It seems that Adrian Cann, our 30 year old Canadian centreback that joined TFC just last year, has
left training camp in South Carolina and headed back to Toronto. He has rejected a new contract
offer and is, I'm assuming, still in negotiations with respect to his contract.
On Saturday night, Toronto FC faced off against Orlando City in the 3rd place match of the Walt
Disney World Pro Soccer Classic. What is there that I can really say about this game? It was dull
with some pretty woeful football and we ended up losing 1-0 with the goal being scored by Orlando's
player-coach.
The Toronto FC squad have been down in Orlando this week continuing preseason preparation under
our new team of Winter and de Klerk. In addition to our core squad, there are a number of academy
players and trialists with the team in Orlando as well. Javier Martina, Nick Soolsma and Elbekay
Bouchiba are in training camp and are expected to be signing with the club soon.
It's been a bit quiet lately on the TFC newsfront. The MLS Combine began on Saturday, so most of
the staff is down in Florida checking out the young players on display. Tomorrow is the big MLS
SuperDraft. It starts at Noon ET and will be on GolTV if you want to watch. I will be covering it
live on twitter, so you can follow me there for up to date news.
After some initial confusion, it is now clear that DeRo is currently on trial with Celtic
without the knowledge of Toronto FC. Here is the statement Toronto FC have released:
"We were unaware of Dwayne's plan to train with Celtic and we will contact them to understand
the situation.
The Re-Entry Draft came and went pretty quickly as most people predicted. Almost every team
passed on the chance to sign a player except for DC United, who picked up Joseph Ngwenya from
Houston, and Columbus Crew, who selected Aaron Hohlbein from Sporting Kansas. Toronto FC opted not
to grab a player, but that doesn't mean they won't try in the second round.
I expected a massive turnover during the offseason and it looks like the management are wasting
no time in offloading all of the dead wood in the current TFC squad. In addition to the players let
go last week, Nane Joseph was traded this week to the Colorado Rapids. In
exchange, TFC have acquired a third round pick in the 2012 MLS SuperDraft.
So that's it for MLS soccer in 2010 (it ended a lot longer ago for TFC of course). The cup final
was a pretty good time, with Colorado pulling off a 2-1 victory in extra time over Dallas to take
the cup. It was certainly a different atmosphere from a TFC game, and there were a lot of empty
seats at BMO Field (less than I thought though), but I enjoyed the match and was happy to see this
season come to a close.
This Sunday night marks the cumulation of the 2010 MLS season with what we hope will be a
cracking final in Toronto: FC Dallas vs. Colorado Rapids. OK, so that doesn't sound like the most
glamorous matchup possible, but I'm hoping for a good game nonetheless.
When the playoffs started, I said to myself, "If the final is New York against LA, I'll buy
tickets".
Apathy has set in. TFC have been playing meaningless matches for almost a month now, both in MLS
and the Concacaf Champions League. Last night they beat Arabe Unido 1-0 to finish 3rd in their
group for CCL, which of course means they do not advance to the knock-out stage. But we've know
this for awhile, so last night's game held no interest for me.
Saturday's game was just crazy. TFC had no business being there, let along managing to somehow
win it. Houston were much better, and I was ready to write off another season as they looked to
lose 1-0. But somehow they managed to battle for a couple free kicks, and amazingly Dwayne
DeRosario scored them both!
Mo went. And so did Preki. You don't need me to tell you that obviously, but what do you think
of the decision by MLSE to fire them both at the same time? I certainly thought it was pretty
quick, but after that loss to DC United everyone, including myself, were calling for big changes.
The "Mo must Go" chanters finally got their way.
Thierry Henry has finally joined the New York Red Bulls and will be gracing the MLS with his
presence very soon.
I'm glad this transfer finally happened, and I think Henry could have some impact in the league
if New York has the talent to provide him with quality scoring opportunities.
Time for the summer to start! The World Cup really takes away a whole month of the summer.
Trying not to find out the scores before I got home from work, watching up to 4 games per day (its
easier if you have a PVR to fast forward!), cheering on your national team of choice and ultimately
being disappointed in the end (unless you go for Spain of course) what a crazy month!
