This article is a fine example of why sportswriters who don't know futbol should stick to football. Or baseball. Or hockey. Or whatever else it is they do know. I'm not exactly sure what this piece is supposed to convey. I suspect it is all about 2 things:

1. The writer doesn't know anything about soccer.
2. The final sentence: "I've got a bad feeling that six months from now we're going to be asking, "Beckham who?
