Steve Cherundolo got the start for Hannover 96, losing 2-0 to Standard Liege in Belgium. Both Group B teams advanced to the knockout stage of the competition. Standard Liege got their first goal in the 25th minute, doubling the lead in the 56th. Cherundolo picked up an 11th minute yellow card. Jozy Altidore went the distance for AZ in a scoreless draw with Malmo in Group G.
