Meaningful Friendlies or the Hype Machine?

After the USWNT got their gold medals in Bejing, they toured the country playing exhibition matches and dubbed it "achieve your gold" or "believe in gold" or maybe "bathe in gold." Whatever. I found the idea so silly, I blatantly ignored the whole thing. Similarly, I do kinda sorta question why these two Mexico friendlies happened at all.
