Firme opositor al nuñismo, fue lo suficientemente oportunista como para integrarse en la candidatura de Elefant Blau en 1998 (y perder contra Núñez), en la de Lluis Bassat en 2000 (cayó contra Gaspart) y de crear su propio grupo electoral para traicionar a Bassat y vencerle en 2003.
