D.C. United season review: Jalen Robinson

United's homegrown defender made huge strides this year

Jalen Robinson didn't get a lot of playing time in 2016. He was on the field for 271 total minutes, which break down as three 90 minute outings and a stoppage time cameo in Houston to add an extra minute. That appearance against the Dynamo marked his MLS debut; previously, Robinson had endured two full seasons without a single minute in league play since signing a homegrown contract in 2014.

United's first center back off the bench might not have such a solid hold on that spot

At the end of the 2015 season, Kofi Opare was in prime position to assume a higher role within D.C. United's central defense next to Steve Birnbaum. Whispers in the organization in the days leading up to the 2016 MLS SuperDraft were that the Black-and-Red were strongly considering drafting a center back to back up an anticipated Birnbapare pairing, with Bobby Boswell serving a Pai Mei-type off the bench as an option/teacher for three center backs, the oldest of whom is Opare, who turned 26 in October.

Ahead of tonight's meeting in front of the D.C. Zoning Commission, D.C. United has submitted what is presumably their presentation to the Commission. Among the information in the presentation:

  • 19,000 total seats, which includes 14,700 general admission seats, 2,200 club seats and 2,100 supporters seats
  • Almost 19,000 square feet of retail space, 18,973, more than their planned team office space of 18,600

The presentation also includes isometric renderings to help illustrate some of the features of the stadium around the field:

More artwork will be shown later at the hearing (but if you are resourceful, can be found on the Zoning Commission's website now).

Colorado Rapids vs. Seattle Sounders MLS Playoffs 2016: Game time, TV schedule and live stream

Two teams that seemed unlikely to get this far are on the cusp of playing in the MLS Cup final

The MLS Cup playoffs are winding down, with the second leg between the Colorado Rapids and Seattle Sounders being one of the three remaining games in the 2016 season. A tense first leg in Seattle saw Colorado take an early lead via a deflected Kevin Doyle shot, only for the Sounders - crucially - to get back level shortly thereafter via Jordan Morris.

When D.C. United acquired Lamar Neagle from Seattle, they were getting a player who had scored 21 goals and added 15 assists over the previous three seasons with the Sounders. Playing primarily in wide midfield, he became a regular starter from day one, often opposite Patrick Nyarko, and contributed nine goals and six assists over the course of the year.
