The final edition of this 2014 preseason feature. We've seen six games this preseason, so let's see where things stand after United lifted the Carolina Challenge Cup on Saturday night.

On Saturday, for the first time in 2014, we saw a D.C. United match that actually behaved like a proper match.

2014 Eastern Conference Preview: Columbus Crew

Black and Red United at related • 1 view

In the second installment of B&RU's look around the Eastern Conference, we take a look at the Columbus Crew. There's a new coach, a new mindset, and a remade back four. Is it enough to improve upon last season's disappointment?

What happened in 2013: Normally your mediocre teams look back on a failed season and cite a high number of draws that should have been wins.

2014 Eastern Conference Previews

We start B&RU's look around the Eastern Conference with the Chicago Fire because of the alphabet. Frank Yallop has changed the formation and made several moves, but the Men in Red still look very dependent on Mike Magee.

What happened in 2013: Basically, just Mike Magee.

No seriously: Before Magee's Chicago Fire debut - naturally against United, because 2013 was just that kind of year - the Men in Red were 2W-2D-7L.

The Black-and-Red have claimed preseason glory with a back-and-forth and exciting, if sloppy, draw against Seattle.

The first silverware of the new year is ours, boys and girls. D.C. United claimed preseason glory - GLORY! (or something) - Saturday night in Charleston, S.C. with a 2-2 draw against the Seattle Sounders in both sides' final match of the 2014 preseason.

D.C. United meets the Seattle Sounders to decide the winner of the Carolina Challenge Cup.

The final game of the 2014 preseason is upon us, with D.C. United taking on the Seattle Sounders to decide the winner of the Carolina Challenge Cup. A win by either team would give them the Cup, whereas a tie would likely give the cup to United based on the first tie-breaker, which is goal differential.

7 days till D.C. United - What kind of year will it be for Eddie Johnson?

Black and Red United at related • 0 views

D.C. United kick off their 2014 season one week from today. We honor the occasion with a look at the new guy in #7, the Grown Ass Man, Eddie Johnson.

His acquisition for some large amount of allocation money is, without question, the biggest of D.C. United's offseason. For all the areas where the Black-and-Red were bad in 2013 - and that really does include all of them - scoring goals (in the other team's net) was probably where they were in the worst way.

The good news: the first XI in each game has kept clean sheets. The bad news: United haven't scored a goal in 180 minutes of preseason.

New faces, same result. Eddie Johnson, Fabian Espindola and Christian Fernandez saw their first time for D.C. United in Saturday night's preseason match against the Chicago Fire, but in the end, it was more of the same.

Four days later, the Black-and-Red are back on the field in Bradenton, Fla.

After playing a majorly revamped team in their first preseason game on Wednesday, D.C. United will take the field tonight against the Chicago Fire, another team making major changes, none bigger than ditching former head coach Frank Klopas and replacing him with Frank Yallop, most recently of the San Jose Earthquakes.

That last unaddressed hole from last season, at left fullback? Consider it addressed. D.C. United has added Spanish left back Christian, a 28 year old veteran of La Liga.

So much for announcing good news early in the week and bad news on Friday afternoon. Right around 5pm on Friday, D.C. United announced that they've finally addressed the glaring need at left fullback, signing 28-year-old Spanish defender Christian Fernandez Salas (who apparently just goes by Christian).

D.C. United is (probably) not a good enough team to boss possession this year. With the team's current roster and outlook, why not try ceding possession and going with an empty bucket?

After Adam's thought experiment on the diamond 4-4-2, and with our very own Chest Rockwell pining for a 4-3-3, I figured that I would want to get into the fun as well.

We're inside of 30 days until D.C. United's season opener on March 8 at RFK Stadium, and the time has come to look at the players who wear jersey numbers 29 and 30 (or at least who wore them last year - I have no clue who is wearing what number this season).

The Indonesian, who personally guaranteed the debts of Inter Milan when he purchased a majority stake of the Italian club, would use the proceeds to ensure adequate cash.

Well, this was probably in the top two or three entries on any D.C. United fan's "Worst Case Scenario" list when we learned of Erick Thohir's now-successful pursuit of a majority stake in Inter Milan.

It's the morning after the Black-and-Red's first preseason game of the year. Let's see what the internet's got for us today.

Say what you want about the quality of the stream last night, but when a match is as foggy as last night's preseason encounter between D.C. United and Toronto FC was, it makes for some epic photos.

D.C. United fall 1-0 to Toronto FC in first preseason match of 2014

In a game that tells us precisely nothing about either team, we will take a different tack in our match review.

Here are the lessons we learned from D.C. United's preseason-opening 1-0 loss to Toronto FC on Wednesday night:

  • Fog can mess up a broadcast, dude.
  • Never trust an amateur-level venue - particularly one in Florida (or Boyds) - to stream professional matches.
