A few heretofore relative unknowns appear in the high scorers this week. I mean, really, I would never have looked twice at a few of these guys, which may be a part of why it was a relatively low scoring week. First, we turn our attention to Dlewis, who led the league with 71 points. Chris Wondolowski (SJ, $10.

Setting the Stage for May: D.C. United's Competition Really Starts to Get Tough

Black and Red United at related • 0 views

The month of April was a nightmare for D.C. United and its fans. Coming on top of a lackluster March performance, two of the regular season's eight months have now passed and D.C. United is in last place among the league's 19 teams. While we hope D.C. United will turn things around during the month of May, if they do, it will happen against a very tough schedule and defy all expectations we could reasonably have at this point.

The Last Word On Yet Another Loss To The Columbus Crew

The game might have been mostly even, but the final score sure wasn't. D.C. United lost its fifth match in a row on Saturday night against the Columbus Crew. Some might say that United turned in a better offensive performance, but the team also gave up three goals thanks to three mistakes by Brandon McDonald.

After two hard-faught ties to start the season, the Washington Spirit looked poised to put an exclamation point on its quest to disprove the masses who picked the team to finish last this season. While the team has far more potential than many expected, the offensive firepower of Sky Blue FC was too much to overcome for the Spirit, playing its second home game, in front of 3,102 fans at the Maryland Soccerplex in Boyds, Maryland.

D.C. United's abysmal start to the 2013 season hit a new low at Crew Stadium tonight, where the Black-and-Red gave up three avoidable goals in the first half en route to a 3-0 defeat. Dominic Oduro, Josh Williams, and Federico Higuain - from the penalty spot - got on the scoresheet for the Crew in a game that was delayed for 50 minutes before kickoff due to a scoreboard fire.

Scouting Report: Columbus Crew

The last time D.C. United met the Columbus Crew, things didn't go well. The 2-1 scoreline flattered United, even if Columbus made several attempts to let us get away with a poor showing. Despite the best goal of our season thus far by Rafael, this game is perhaps better remembered for Bill Hamid making a string of huge saves and Kyle Porter's apparently good goal (I say "apparently" because the Professional Referee Organization's mea culpa concerning the initial mistake was extraordinarily generous to United in my book).

Normally, an inconsistent team in MLS is generally the kind of side you want to pick on a little bit. After all, inconsistent teams shouldn't travel well given their lack of confidence and/or continuity, right? So, for example, when a team loses to a New York Red Bulls team that could only call on Thierry Henry for the last half-hour, or drops points at home to Toronto FC, you start thinking that this is the kind of team D.

Possibly helpful, possibly pedantic side note: The only abductor muscles in the body are related to the fingers and toes, whereas adductor can refer to several muscles in the inner thigh, so in soccer it's almost always going to be an adductor strain rather than an abductor strain.

Here at B&RU, we've been having this discussion for over two seasons now about why teams playing 433 (or certain 4231 sides that are not far removed from playing 433) cause trouble for D.C. United. The trick, of course, is that there is no one reason. The Houston Dynamo's version of the formation in question was a lot different from, say, the Philadelphia Union's more rigid 4231-that-they-called-a-433.

Happy Thursday, ladies and gentlemen. I hope your week is going smoothly. If you're anything like me, you're going to make up a fake excuse to leave work at 3 pm, then head down to the bar to watch some Europa League. You're not a real soccer fan until you skip work to watch Europa League.

Today's edition of Freedom Kicks includes a couple of Sporting KC previewish things, some notes on the U.

Well, D.C. United fans, get ready for more Dave Johnson and John Harkes in your future. The Post's Steve Goff is reporting this morning that the club and Comcast Sports Net have reached a three-year agreement to show at least (almost) half of United's games. As Goff teased in his Facebook feed, this is not ideal.

Hey, our team has a functioning website again. Way to go, D.C. United! Even with their help, this daily links post is a bit tougher than I anticipated it would be. I estimate that this blog contains half of the D.C. United content on the internet on a daily basis, and that's an estimate that is generous to the rest of the internet.

I swear, this really was going to be a short episode. With no game last weekend for us to break down, we were going to do a quick tactical review of the season-to-date and then jump into our preview of D.C. United's upcoming visit to Sporting Kansas City (Friday night, 8:30, MLS Live). I should have known that we'd end up nerding out for longer than planned.

This week, to preview D.C. United's game against Sporting Kansas City, I exchanged questions with Andy Edwards, the man in charge over at our sister blog The Daily Wiz. Here's what he had to say about his Sporks - my answers to his questions about United are farther down the page.

D.C. United lineup versus Sporting Kansas City: Follow the Gladiador?

After a weekend off, D.C. United is back in action this Friday, taking a trip to Sporting Park in Kansas City. United's lineup is currently unsettled, with poor performances putting players across the field on notice. However, with few good options to replace those players who are currently underperforming, the lineup for this Friday's game against Sporting Kansas City will look similar to the lineups from the first few games this season.

All of Black & Red United's coverage of D.C. United and MLS Week 6 in one convenient stop.

Everybody rested after D.C. United's bye during Week 5? Good. They're back this week with a rare Friday night tilt that won't be nationally televised (Thanks, Sporks!). In our prediction league, Jason took no off days and pulled into the lead - our standings:

Week 3 Scores (possible 8): Adam: 4 points | Chest: 6 pts | Benuski: 4 pt | Stephen: 4 pts

Total Scores (possible 42): Adam: 17 pts | Chest: 20 pts | Benuski: 13 pts | Stephen: 18 pts

Happy Tuesday, ladies and gentlemen. D.C. United's website was down basically all day Monday, which I can only assume is due to the large volume of traffic sent their way by the first edition of Freedom Kicks. Sorry, guys. I went to the site a few hours before this posting to see if they had anything for me to link up and it was still down.

D.C. United were on bye this week, so this may be a little shorter than usual. Let's dive right into it by recognizing the week's highest scorer, Handsome Boys SC. Employing a 4-3-3, Handsome Boys scored 74 points and rose to 9th place in the league. Defender Aurilien Collin ($6.1M, SKC) was the leading scorer, putting up a captain-aided 18 points.

Setting the Stage for April: Time for Early Revenge

The 2013 Major League Soccer regular season is eight months long, and the first of those months is now complete. March brought some surprises, some expected results, and a lot of consternation for D.C. United fans. We hope April is kinder for the hometown team, but it certainly starts with a difficult away game at Sporting Kansas City this Friday night.

We may be under new management here at B&RU, but like the Starks of Winterfell, ours are the Old Ways, and the monthly choosing of the best is an established tradition we're going to keep going. Keep your eye out later today for a new addition to our traditions, but for now, I'll leave you with the nominees for March Player of the Month:

Bill Hamid - Let's be honest; United's backstop is going to win this month's contest in a walk.

Earlier today, we got to talk about the good with D.C. United's Player of the Month for March, and now we get the flipside: the Goat of the Month. Let's skip the formalities and jump straight to the inaugural nominees:

Dwayne De Rosario: The captain left the team in a major hole with his head butt on Danny Cruz in the last preseason game.
