Houston Dynamo vs. D.C. United - TV, time, lineups, predictions and GameThread

Black and Red United at related • 0 views

At last, our long national nightmare is over. MLS is finally back, and D.C. United kicks off the 2013 campaign with a toughie: at the Houston Dynamo, in a stadium where nobody has beaten the Orange and a city where the Black-and-Red have never won. Add to that the Dynamo seeming to have our number and the Dwayne De Rosario's suspension for a preseason bout of insanity (and also headbutting), and Ben Olsen's side will have their work cut out for them.

Scouting Report: Houston Dynamo

Black and Red United at related • 0 views

Every team in the world has an away game on their schedule that never seems to go well. Sometimes they just get outplayed, sometimes they fall victim to the one special moment in an otherwise even game, and sometimes the ref just screws them. It's always something.

For D.C. United, that away game has been "at Houston Dynamo" since Texas gained a second MLS club back in 2006.

Houston Dynamo vs. D.C. United: With DeRo officially suspended, how will D.C. react?

Black and Red United at related • 0 views

We knew it could be coming, and this morning, it came. Dwayne De Rosario has been suspended for two games and fined an undisclosed amount for his apparent headbutt of Danny Cruz in the team's last preseason game. Right now I'm fighting the urge to indulge my righteous indignation - no disciplinary action for last year's Philadelphia Union fracas (read: brawl) in a preseason game, no indication that any action would have been taken if this had happened earlier in preseason, no extra discipline for Osvaldo Alonso's dangerous tackle this preseason on Chris Tierney.

MLS 2013 First Kick Countdown: 1 day - Prediction Time!

Black and Red United at related • 1 view

Well, folks, we've nearly made it. The season starts tomorrow with Sporting Kansas City's visit to the Philadelphia Union and really gets going (clearly) with D.C. United's nationally televised Texas trip to take on the Houston Dynamo in a rematch of last year's Eastern Conference Finals. So what better time to invite some good old fashioned speculation from our readership?

Eastern Conference Season Preview: Montreal Impact

Black and Red United at related • 0 views

Last season: The Montreal Impact started their first MLS season as most expansion teams do: Struggling mightily. Five points from their opening eight games would have left them badly adrift at the bottom of the standings if not for Toronto FC's dreadful season. After their 19th game, things weren't much better: L'Impact were sitting on a record of 5W-3D-11L, despite putting together a team mostly comprised of MLS veterans and guys with Serie A experience like Marco Di Vaio and (when healthy) Matteo Ferrari.

Houston Dynamo vs. D.C. United: Goff reporting that Dwayne De Rosario likely to be suspended "at least" for the Houston game

Black and Red United at related • 0 views

This is not how D.C. United wanted to kick off the season. Facing a big rematch of last year's Eastern Conference Final, at the scene where a controversial no-call undoubtedly changed the course of the match and allowed the Houston Dynamo to come from behind to build a lead in the first leg, Ben Olsen's side were hoping for every advantage heading into First Kick this weekend.

MLS First Kick 2013 Countdown: 2 days - James Riley's acquisition by D.C. United represents the team's ambitions

Black and Red United at related • 0 views

There are two players who have won trophies at RFK Stadium. One of them in Dwayne De Rosario, who led the Houston Dynamo to the 2008 MLS Cup crown in a Final played on East Capitol Street. The other one is James Riley, who lifted the 2009 U.S. Open Cup along the Anacostia with the expansion Seattle Sounders (a game I had the misfortune of attending).

Eastern Conference Season Preview: Philadelphia Union

Black and Red United at related • 0 views

Last season: Things got off to an ugly start, as Sebastien Le Toux's rumored trial with Bolton Wanderers turned into a fiasco. Le Toux returned, and the Union immediately shipped him off to Vancouver. This capped off the dismantling of a 2011 playoff team and saw their fanbase turn on Peter Nowak, who seemed to not be aware that fans will question team leadership when they do things that defy explanation.

MLS 2013 First Kick Countdown: 3 days - Robbie Russell's farewell tour kicks off in Houston Saturday

Black and Red United at related • 0 views

There aren't a lot of guys who can say with absolute authority that a swing of their leg definitely won MLS Cup. Robbie Russell is one of those guys, scoring the walk-off finish as Real Salt Lake won the 2009 MLS Cup in penalties. Hopefully he'll get to raise MLS Cup again this year - and not just because he now plays for D.

D.C. United sign Panamanian winger Marcos Sanchez on one-year loan from Tauro FC

Our hunch was right, and it was only a matter of time. Today, D.C. United announced that they have signed 23-year-old Panama international Marcos Sanchez on a one-year loan from Tauro FC. Sanchez impressed as a trialist this month and will push Nick DeLeon for playing time on the right side of midfield and can fill in across the forward part of midfield.

Eastern Conference Season Preview: Houston Dynamo

Black and Red United at related • 2 views

Last season: After winning just three of their first ten games, the Houston Dynamo recovered somewhat to end up with a bland 6W-6D-5L record at the 2012 season's midway point. However, almost immediately after that milestone, the Dynamo embarked on a five-game winning streak, a burst that essentially ensured their playoff spot.

MLS First Kick 2013 Countdown: 4 days - Brandon McDonald is D.C. United's most important defender

Black and Red United at related • 0 views

He hasn't been around RFK Stadium quite as long as yesterday's subject in this space Dejan Jakovic. But Brandon McDonald is, without a doubt, D.C. United's most important defender. It is his organization that keeps the back line in sync, his long balls out of the back that provide us a pressure release valve and his attitude that define the Black-and-Red back four.

MLS First Kick 2013 Countdown: 5 days - For Dejan Jakovic, the key word is "consistency"

Black and Red United at related • 0 views

The 2012 season was generally very good one for Dejan Jakovic. D.C. United's Canadian-by-way-of-Serbia center back solidified his starting spot for the Black-and-Red, using his elite speed and underrated tackling ability to help the D.C. defense, particularly down the unbeaten stretch run.

But the real story of Jakovic's 2012 was the elimination of the mistakes - the brain farts - that had plagued his game since he first came to East Capitol Street in 2009.

The Eastern Conference was tight in 2012, and this year appears to be even tighter. The bad teams are signing better players, and the top teams have arguably come back to earth a bit. D.C. D.C. United signs trialist Kyle Porter, according to his management's Twitter account

Black and Red United at related • 0 views

God bless Twitter. We get news marginally faster than we used to, and not just from official sources. Players can break stories about their own call ups to national teams (*cough* Eddie Johnson) or trades, as we saw with James Riley. But their management agencies can break news, too. That appears to have happened this weekend, as Kudos Management, the agency representing Canadian trialist Kyle Porter, tweeted the following:

We confirm Kyle Porter has agreed to terms with DC United.

D.C. United 2013 Season Preview: Ben Olsen knows that consistency wins in MLS

Black and Red United at related • 1 view

The most successful club in MLS history made a return to prominence last season, falling just short of the MLS Cup Final. In 2013, D.C. United are looking to take that next step toward adding a fifth star above the badge.

2012 Record: 17W-7T-10L, 58 points, 2nd in the East, 3rd in Supporters' Shield race

Key Losses: Designated players Branko Boskovic and Hamdi Salihi, homegrown midfielder/fullback Andy Najar, center back Emiliano Dudar, striker Maicon Santos

Key Additions: Young DP striker Rafael "Gladiador", Guatemalan national team and MLS veteran striker Carlos Ruiz, central midfielder John Thorrington, fullback James Riley, striker Casey Townsend.

MLS First Kick 2013 Countdown: 6 days - Let's talk about shape in the central midfield

Black and Red United at related • 0 views

Traditionally in soccer, certain numbers are associated with certain positions. The number 1 is always going to be a goalkeeper's number. When we say "number 9" we're talking about a striker. A "number 10" is a central attacking midfielder, a trequartista, and a subject we talked about just a few days ago in this very countdown.

Dwayne De Rosario could be suspended for First Kick for his head butt and red card against the Union in preseason

Black and Red United at related • 3 views

There's really only one story coming out of yesterday's 2-0 preseason win over the Philadelphia Union that I'm paying attention to right now: Dwayne De Rosario's red card for a possible head butt of former D.C. United player Danny Cruz. Yes, it's great that United won and kept a clean sheet. It's even better that Lionard Pajoy had a major hand in both goals and that there were no injuries to report and that Panamanian trialist Marcos Sanchez found his way onto the score sheet with an assist on Pajoy's insurance goal deep into the second half.

His undying competitive fire? The fact that he takes amazingly good care of himself? Or is all of that just subsumed into one image that is synonymous with "DeRo"?

COUNTERPOINT: Why I Don't Want Carlos Ruiz, A Player With No Place In D.C. United Tradition

Black and Red United at related • 0 views

When D.C. United announced yesterday the surprise acquisition of Guatemalan forward Carlos Ruiz, the discussion here quickly turned to a comparison with Charlie Davies.

The comparison is a bit contrived, given that they each arrived in D.C. in very different circumstances - Davies as an immediate fan favorite, returning as a hero to the place that almost took his life and giving us the opportunity to watch him rise from the ashes, and Ruiz as one of the most hated players in MLS history.

MLS First Kick 2013 Countdown: 8 days - What about this John Thorrington guy?

Black and Red United at related • 0 views

For all our talk about the missing pieces in D.C. United's lineup this off-season, we've said the name John Thorrington surprisingly little. The South African was acquired by the Black-and-Red during this winter's Re-Entry Draft/Mechanism/Doodad/Thing when his option was declined by the Vancouver Whitecaps.

To say that D.C. United's acquisition of Carlos Ruiz has inspired strong reactions from the Black-and-Red fanbase would be understatement. In Brazil, fans of his team Bahia called him Gladiador because of his physical style and his "thumbs down" goal celebration. In D.C. United's locker room, though, they're just calling him Rafa. There was a time when D.C. MLS First Kick 2013 Countdown: 11 days - Two questions about Marcelo Saragosa

Let's make no mistake, Marcelo Saragosa is an important part of D.C. United coming into the 2013 season. His partnership with Perry Kitchen in the deeper part of central midfield is one of the major factors that helped shore up United's defense and allowed the Black-and-Red to keep clean sheets at the end of last season.

Joseph Nane, Jan Frederiksen and Shavar Thomas end trials and leave D.C. United camp

Joseph Nane made two appearances for United in the Disney Pro Soccer Classic this month, both times leaving observers wanting more.

MLS First Kick Countdown: 12 days - What position will Raphael Augusto play when he ever gets on the field?

Black and Red United at related • 0 views

Brazilian Raphael Augusto joined D.C. United last fall and has only played 50 minutes for the Black-and-Red. Every one of those minutes came in last season's Eastern Conference final first leg in Houston, when he came on for an injured Marcelo Saragosa late in the first half. He immediately moved into a more attacking role than his compatriot and in less than 10 minutes suffered what should have been ruled a red card foul from Andre Hainault in what was very nearly a 1v1 situation with Houston keeper Tally Hall.

Salary cap to prevent D.C. United from signing Jan Frederiksen?

Two news reports, one out of Denmark and one out of Poland, are saying that Jan Frederiksen will not be signing with D.C. United due to salary cap considerations. An earlier article said that while D.C. United wanted to sign him, it was only going to be on their terms. United were only willing to offer a one year contract at $80,000 per year, at least according to the Danish media, whereas Frederiksen wanted more money and a longer contract.

Black and Red United at related • 0 views

D.C. United lost 2-0 to Sporting Kansas City in an uneven, rain-soaked Walt Disney Pro Soccer Classic preseason match. Bobby Convey and Soony Saad scored the goals late, with Convey's powerful strike coming in the 74th minute and Saad adding the second in the 81st. The game was played in a downpour for the last 75 minutes, resulting in a game where both teams were largely able to contain each other.

We've seen what D.C. United can do to NASL opposition in preseason. Now it's time for the real thing (in preseason). Tonight, the Black-and-Red take on Sporting Kansas City and their high-pressure 4-3-3 in a match that will pit the top two MLS Eastern Conference sides from last season. We've got the video up above, and we have a separate post for it linked down below if you'd prefer that.

MLS First Kick 2013 Countdown: 17 days - Will Conor Shanosky see more of D.C. or Richmond this season?

We're now 17 days away from D.C. United's season opener in Houston, and so we're taking a look at the Black-and-Red's number 17, Conor Shanosky. The Sterling, Va. native signed a homegrown deal with United back in 2010 but has yet to make an official appearance for the first team. He spent last year on loan with the Ft.

MLS First Kick 2013 Countdown: 18 days - Will Nick DeLeon fall prey to the sophomore slump?

Black and Red United at related • 0 views

How great of a draft pick was Nick DeLeon? Despite being panned by Taylor Twellman and Alexi Lalas during the 2011 SuperDraft, there's no doubt in anybody's mind now that the Louisville-by-way-of-UNLV product was basically a steal for D.C. United at the seventh pick. DeLo came on strong, scoring in his debut against the LA Galaxy and keeping Chris Pontius off the field for a short spell, but eventually succumbed to the infamous rookie wall.

Fans of women's soccer in and around the Nation's Capital can finally start planning their 2013. Today, the NWSL announced the schedule for its inaugural season, and we now know when the Washington Spirit will be playing each of their 22 games in the new women's top flight.

They'll open on the road before welcoming Abby Wambach and the Western New York Flash to the Maryland Soccer Plex for the first home game in club history - and the first of a four-match homestand.

Panamanian International Marcos Sanchez And MLS Veteran Shavar Thomas Join D.C. United On Trial

Just under a week ago, Ben Olsen hinted that D.C. United would be making more additions as the preseason went on. That has proven to be the case: Ugandan center back Henry Kalungi, Danish left back Jan Frederiksen, and Honduran attacker Walter Martinez have all come into camp since then, as United's search for talent has apparently expanded to cover much of the globe.

MLS First Kick 2013 Countdown: 19 days - What would you like to see more of at B&RU?

Black and Red United at related • 0 views

For the second day in a row, we land on a number without a player. If Emiliano Dudar had returned, we wouldn't have this issue, but alas, there is no number 19 on D.C. United right now. So let's take the opportunity to open things up to you, our readers, to let us know how we're doing.

I'm sure you've noticed some changes around these parts since I took over for Martin last month.

MLS First Kick 2013 Countdown: 20 days - Looking at D.C. United's coaching situation

Black and Red United at related • 0 views

Well, D.C. United doesn't have a number 20 on the roster at this point in time, so I figured we'd take today to look at another vital part of the team: the coaching staff. Obviously Ben Olsen as the head man is a big deal in all things United. Chad Ashton was an assistant under Tom Soehn, moved to Technical Director during the short-but-not-short-enough Onalfo Era, and returned to the sideline when Olsen took over.

D.C. United Eases To 4-0 Win Over Tampa Bay Rowdies In Walt Disney Pro Soccer Classic Opener

Black and Red United at related • 0 views

D.C. United's first preseason games were actually over the previous two weeks, but since neither had streaming video or radio coverage, they almost didn't feel like "real" preseason games. Tonight was different: United closed down the first night of the Walt Disney Pro Soccer Classic by thumping the Tampa Bay Rowdies 4-0.

MLS First Kick 2013 Countdown: 21 days - Daniel Woolard may be the key to D.C. United's defense in 2013

Black and Red United at related • 0 views

I think very few people would disagree with the statement that D.C. United were hard hit by injuries through 2012. In addition to shorter-term injuries to Chris Pontius, Nick DeLeon and Emiliano Dudar, there was obviously the big injury to Dwayne De Rosario, which forced a major tactical shift in Ben Olsen's side.

Keeping Tabs On The Rest Of MLS: Good News, Bad News For Western Conference Clubs

Black and Red United at related • 1 view

We've had a look at the Eastern Conference, where D.C. United appears to be one of the more stable squads despite losing several players and gaining a few new ones. However, it seems to me that it's been even busier in the Western Conference. The top four clubs have all lost an important starter, while those who looked short of "contender" status in 2012 have added attacking talent.

MLS First Kick 2013 Countdown: 22 days - Can Chris Korb fill Andy Najar's shoes at right fullback?

Black and Red United at related • 0 views

A year ago, many fans of D.C. United had already come to terms with the idea that Andy Najar might be moving onto Europe sooner than later. Back then, though, who would have thought that the Honduran's departure would potentially expose the roster at the fullback position? That's just what happened when he was sold to Anderlecht last month after manning the right fullback spot for the last stretch of the 2012 season.

USA vs. Honduras: Match Review - Yanks fall 2-1 in deserved loss to open Hexagonal

Black and Red United at related • 0 views

In a word, that sucked. The U.S. Men's National Team dropped the first game of the final round of qualifying for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, losing 2-1 to Honduras. This despite going up 1-0 late in the first half through Clint Dempsey. Even when ahead 0-1, the Americans were generally outplayed over the entire 90 minutes, and the Hondurans deservedly went ahead on Jerry Bengston's 78th minute game-winner after a miscommunication between Geoff Cameron and Tim Howard allowed Oscar Boniek Garcia to square for Bengston, who ran past a ball-watching Omar Gonzalez to slot the winner home into an open net.

If you stick around these parts (by the bye, thanks for reading!), and if Michael Seaton grows from a 16-year-old homegrown signing for D.C. Van Buren was awesome in a lot of ways - he has a New York street gang named for him, and he might be responsible for the global usage of the term okay.
