D.C. United 1-1 Portland Timbers: United Scrapes Out A Point In A Difficult Setting

Black and Red United at related • 0 views

Did D.C. United deserve a point against the Portland Timbers? Was there a handball in the box? Did Perry Kitchen's cross hit the arm of David Horst?

I have no idea really. Maybe it sort of went through his sleeve but didn't actually touch his arm? I don't know. We may never know.

But let's look at this differently.

This isn't necessarily one of those "Sweep The Leg" type matches for D.C. United. But it isn't exactly a "just get a point on the road" match either. The Portland Timbers are never an easy out at JELD-WEN Field, so perhaps this match is somewhere in the middle.

United is riding a three-game winning streak into this match, and with a five-point advantage over the Columbus Crew, tonight's isn't a must-win match by any stretch.

Tonight's a bit of an Upstairs-Downstairs night in Eastern Conference action, as we'll have lots of playoff-contending teams pitted against the league's also-rans. D.C. United don't kick off in Portland until 10:30 tonight, so get ready for it starting with the early games tonight, both of which have implications for the Black-and-Red's playoff hunt.

With Chicago's loss in K.C. Friday night, D.C. United has a chance to jump to second in MLS' Eastern Conference. But only if other results on Saturday fall right. With that, and more, on the line, D.C.'s fans will be watching the other league games.

It's the time of year when scoreboard-watching becomes a nasty habit for fans of any of MLS' playoff hopefuls, D.

The Portland Timbers only have 29 points, despite the fact that the 2012 regular season is nearly done. D.C. United surpassed that meager total all the way back in June (specifically with the first 1-0 win at Philadelphia). Only Chivas USA and Toronto FC have done worse this season.

In a vacuum, tonight's game sound like a gimme.

It's the time of year when scoreboard-watching becomes a nasty habit for fans of any of MLS' playoff hopefuls, D.C. United's diehards obviously included. NBC Sports Network is banking on that tonight as the top two teams in the Eastern Conference get together in Kansas City with barbecue and blues CDs first place on the line.

D.C. United faces another unfamiliar opponent on Saturday. With a cross-country flight to the Pacific Northwest, the Portland Timbers are next up on our schedule, continuing the happy trend of facing weak opponents towards the end of the regular season. To get a closer look at the Timbers, we exchanged questions with SB Nation's Timbers blog Stumptown Footy.

Fortunately, D.C. United Won't Have A General Manager Vote Like The Seattle Sounders

From Oct. 7 to Dec. 7, season ticket holders for the Seattle Sounders will get to cast a vote either for or against retaining Adrian Hanauer as the team's general manager.

Hanauer will probably receive a majority of votes to keep his job, but the fact that there's even a possibility of fans voting out a successful general manager just goes to show how stupid this process is.

Major League Soccer is a league full of versatile players. American soccer in general seems good at producing players who are jacks of all trades rather than great specialists. Even our star players end up wandering the field like nomads: Landon Donovan has spent time on both flanks, as a forward, and as a #10.

In a press release today, D.C. United announced that central defender Dejan Jakovic has been called in by the Canadian National Team for his service for two upcoming World Cup Qualifying matches. Jakovic will join the team for its matches against Cuba on Oct. 12 and against Honduras on Oct. 16.

The good news is that United doesn't have any matches during this time frame.

MLS Cup 2012 - If D.C. United Goes, I'll Go Too

I wasn't there in 1996. Few of us were.

I wish I'd been there in 1997. I wish I'd been at RFK Stadium to see D.C. United lift their second MLS Cup trophy in two years. Winning that trophy in front of the home fans must have felt great for those players. Surely it was a fantastic experience for those United fans that were in the stands as well.

Over the next seven days, we're taking a brief pause from relentless battles against Eastern Conference foes. We'll face the Portland Timbers on the road next Saturday, but first Chivas USA at RFK Stadium tomorrow night.

We can't blame you if you haven't watched a whole lot of matches featuring Chivas this season.

Let's get this out of the way: Despite Friday's fear mongering, tonight's game is a must-win for D.C. United.

It's not a must-win in terms of the standings, thanks in part to some help from the Chicago Fire - 2-1 victors over the 6th place Columbus Crew - and the New England Revolution (who held the New York Red Bulls to a 1-1 draw).

With two matches in the last week against teams outside of playoff position, D.C. United was able to hold serve. No upsets, no breaks. Meanwhile, we've seen the New York Red Bulls gain only a point against the New England Revolution, and the Columbus Crew fall to the Chicago Fire. Things are working out just fine for United so far this weekend.

D.C. United 1-0 Chivas USA: Branko Boskovic Nets Winner As Defense Holds Steady

The stories about Branko Boskovic write themselves. Publicly criticized by his coach, repeatedly subbed out just barely into the second half, and now finding himself on the bench to start the match. Many players would mope, or beg to return home where the playing time comes easier. That's not what Boskovic did though.

Fixed starting XI? We don't need no stinking fixed starting XI!

For the third straight game since Dwayne De Rosario went out for the season with an MCL sprain, D.C. United won by one goal Sunday night. For the third straight game, United ran out a starting XI, and a starting formation, different from the previous game.

For the first time since their unveiling, all three D.C. United owners (or operators, if you want to be pedantic), were at the game against Chivas USA. While in town, Craig Stouffer of the Washington Examiner got to talk to Jason Levien, the member of the triumvariate who is leading the day to day efforts of getting D.
