Portland Timbers Roster Analysis: Midfielders

Stumptown Footy at related • 0 views

It is that time of the year to start speculating on exactly what the Portland Timbers' roster needs are for the next year. For starters we need to take a look at the most used formations by John Spencer and the Timbers and then fill in what the Timbers still have on the roster.

Formation(s):

The Timbers employed a 4-4-2 for almost the first half of the season.

MLS Re-Entry Draft Player List Released; Any Future Timbers in Here?

Stumptown Footy at related • 0 views

Monday, December 5th, is the first stage of the MLS Re-Entry Draft. The entire process gets fairly convoluted, as MLS is wont to do. As such, I figured I'll just copy/pasta their rules here for you:

Any player selected in Stage 1 will remain on the drafting club's 2012 budget at the option price or Bona Fide Offer price until April 1, 2012.

My Memorable Inaugrual MLS Season Moments

Stumptown Footy at related • 0 views

Well, with a little time separating us from the season I thought I would take a little time to recount some of my favorite moments from the season, you know the ones that really stuck with me as a relatively new soccer fan. These are sequenced in order of my preference, and are subject to my personal memory at the time.

Portland Timbers' First Kick is on March 12th at Jeld-Wen Field

Stumptown Footy at related • 0 views

Well this is quite early from what we're used to, but apparently the MLS HQ has decided to release the home opening dates for all clubs ahead of the 2012 season. Essentially what we have here is a list of when each team is playing their home opener for the 2012 season.

The Portland Timbers, as the title suggests, opens up Jeld-Wen Field on March 12th, 2012 although against which other team is not yet known.

Should Captain Jack Wear the Armband in 2012?

Stumptown Footy at related • 0 views

Way back on March 1, just a couple of weeks before the start of the regular season, the Portland Timbers coaxed Jack Jewsbury away from Sporting Kansas City. Days later he captained his new team to a 2-0 defeat of the Seattle Sounders and promptly ended the debate - among the coaching staff, at least - over who would end up wearing the armband for the Timbers in 2011.

Kevin Goldthwaite Has Officially Retired

Stumptown Footy at related • 0 views

Got some sad news for everybody (and yes it is sad!) as Timbers center back defender, Kevin Goldthwaite, has announced his retirement from the game today. While some of you might rejoice that he is no longer a Timbers player many of us will remember some of his other contributions to the team including a goal scored this past season.

Roster News! Troy Perkins, David Horst Re-Signed, Others Dropped

Stumptown Footy at related • 1 view

One thing right after another today. With the sad news of Kevin Goldthwaite's retirement -- due to, I suspect, injuries -- comes more roster news with a couple re-signings and some other, sadly enough, players dropped.

The first bit of news is very welcome to me, personally, as both our star goalkeeper Troy Perkins and up and coming center back defender David Horst were re-signed to new contracts of which we're not quite sure about the details.

Timbers vs Sounders: Is the Rivalry good for MLS?

Stumptown Footy at related • 3 views

Go to any article on the MLS site that has anything to do with the Seattle Sounders or the Portland Timbers and you will find back and forth snide comments from Seattle and Timbers fans. Even in the Goal of the Year and Save of the Year articles you had the constant bickering between the two fan bases.

This article is straight up guesswork and pure conjecture on my part. Again I am GUESSING, but I think it is a pretty educated guess. I am basing my article on this the article on Portland's website talking about Gavin's travel and specifically on the following quote.

"I've been following a player from Chico for a while," he hinted.

This is our first Thanksgiving here at Stumptown Footy and, hot damn, it's been a pretty wild ride! Despite each of our fairly hectic schedules between school, work, other sites we might write for, and generally needing to socialize every now and then, we've managed to put together some halfway decent content on the site for you guys.

And so it begins: Players waived

Stumptown Footy at related • 0 views

The second step in the MLS offseason also occurred today as MLS teams waived players to make room on their rosters. Not surprisingly Portland did not waive a single player but quite a few other teams did waive players. Including Vancouver, who waived 3 players and Toronto, who waived 7 players.

All of the waived players are now free to sign with any club in any country they wish.

Roster news

Stumptown Footy at related • 0 views

I have yet to track down exactly who it might be but here are a couple of things I have found out:

  • 1 Portland Timber is Retiring possibly more
  • 2 or more Portland Timbers did not have their contracts renewed
  • 1 DP Signing could be announced in the next two weeks as Wilkinson is in talks with an international player
  • 2 or more Timbers will be getting their Green Cards and therefore will not be using an international slot
The 1 retiring player is not Adin Brown but I believe he is one "possibly more".

As the quality on MLS rosters continues to grow year after year, the league's new teams find themselves with a wealth of options from which to build their team.

Congratulations to the Los Angeles Galaxy for winning MLS Cup. There I said it. Can we just move on already?

For those of you who watched the game, I'm sorry. It wasn't exactly an enthralling game was it? Of course most MLS Cup matches aren't so I suppose it really was no surprise. Still, Beckham has his trophy, LA finally proved they can win the big enchilada so good for them.

MLS Schedule and Conference Format Revealed; Frustration Ensues

Stumptown Footy at related • 0 views

This is a tad late so you might have read about it elsewhere already, but essentially we know what the 2012 season is going to look like. We don't have a hard schedule, mind you, but we know, at least, what the format is going to be... And it's not pretty.

We knew already that the schedule was going to change and that it was going to be unbalanced.

NCAA wants soccer players to be more "academic"

Stumptown Footy at related • 1 view

The NCAA dropped a bombshell on non-revenue sports and released a proposal (which you read more about here.) which would reduce competitions by 10% and cut spring competitions. This would mean that Soccer players as well as other sports would only have a short season in the fall/winter and now games or practices again until August.

Los Angeles Galaxy win the MLS Cup

The Los Angeles Galaxy beat the Houston Dynamo 1-0 to win the 2011 MLS Cup. In a match touted as David Beckham's final MLS match, neither side made a terribly compelling case for a title match victory during a mostly dull 90 minutes, the hyperbolic ESPN commentary notwithstanding. In the end the match was won on a single goal from Landon Donovan late in the second half, securing the final result nearly everyone expected.

The Major League Soccer Cup Final is upon us! It may not be the Timbers facing off today in Carson, California but the Houston Dynamo and Los Angeles Galaxy should provide plenty of entertainment. Continuing in the tradition of recent years, the weather at the Home Depot Center for the MLS Cup is rainy and should lend itself to a sloppy, physical game that, while maybe not the best soccer ever played on American shores, will certainly be a passionate finale to a memorable 2011 season.

Wow! I mean, I knew it was a great goal but I figured the Eric Hassli goal was going to be the goal of the year simply based on the circumstances surrounding it. I mean, it was a great goal against a primary rival coming from behind in the late minutes. Really, it had a lot of emotional support.

But never count out a Portland Timbers I always say.

Portland Timbers Training Notes & Quotes: Winding Down Edition

If John Spencer says it, it must be true. "They're winding down. We try and keep the tempo as high as we can, but professional athletes are geared toward training and playing games that mean something to them, so this time of year you can't help but switch off a little bit."

The trialists playing with the Timbers were running on all cylinders, though.

We will a have a 34-game schedule and it will be unbalanced. It's simple math: 389 games would almost be impossible for us to execute with the other competitions we're required to play, the weather issues we have ... the challenges in a handful of markets, the FIFA dates,All the thing we have to do differently in the United States from a competitive standpoint, just the travel impact that exists in our country.

Timbers Tid Bits: John Spencer Edition

Yesterday we were hearing unsubstantiated reports that the Colorado Rapids were looking to poach head coach John Spencer from the Portland Timbers. At the time I honestly suspected that they were highly speculative and based on very little. As it turns out, however, they were true!

Luckily, it looks like Spencer has decided to stay on with Portland next year.

Portland Timbers Receive 2011 Fair Play Award

Stumptown Footy at related • 1 view

Don't say the Portland Timbers never won anything in their first year as it looks like they're taking home the trophy for "most polite."

Well, not really. In actuality, the award is for the team that committed the fewest fouls over the entire season. The Timbers came in a low 347 fouls with the Colorado Rapids coming in next at 374 fouls.

So yesterday's Conference Finals were interesting. Not so much because they unexpected happened. In fact, I'd have pegged the Los Angeles Galaxy to beat Real Salt Lake any day and the Houston Dynamo and Sporting Kansas City matches were pretty much up in the air. No, it's interesting for a couple of reasons:

Merrit Paulson on The Sports Insider (Edited)

Many interesting bits. A lot of stuff about the stadium. The thing that stuck out most was Paulson mentioned something along the lines of "Our GM is very close to signing a guy who has a higher ceiling than anyone on our roster."

Update: Give this a listen it has a ton of interesting information.

Quick Recap:

The Houston Dynamo takes care of business against a young Philladelphia Union team and win their last home game at Robertson Stadium 1-0.

First Half

Inexplicably Peter Nowak made multiple changes to the Union line-up, leaving off regular started Justin Mapp and FreddyAdu. The changes did not help the Union even though they were able to control the ball at times they were unable to get a shot that looked dangerous.

Set Piece Goals Clinch Sporting Victory Over Rapids

Sporting Kansas City hosted the Colorado Rapids on a rain-soaked pitch the second leg in the Eastern Conference Semifinals. The home team did exactly what they needed to do in order to preserve their 2-0 lead from the first leg and added two insurance goals on set pieces. Colorado had a few promising moments but were unable to put any kind of sustained pressure on their opponents.

Real Salt Lake carried a three goal lead into the second leg against the Seattle Sounders and they would need the whole thing before the end of the night. Seattle attacked from the first whistle and kept pressure on RSL until the final whistle. The home team controlled the game and almost all of the possession but were held back by some early injuries.

Uh Oh... MLS gauging interest in Baltimore for possible DC United move?

Some bad news for our friends back East as it looks like things are starting to get a little more serious about that whole D.C. United - Baltimore United fiasco.

Apparently MLS sent soccer fans located around DC and Baltimore a survey to gauge their interest in such a move, a move that I wholeheartedly disagree with.

A single goal set up by David Beckham and slammed home by Mike Magee saw the Los Angeles Galaxy overcome the New York Red Bulls in the first round of the two leg conference semifinals. The conditions at the stadium were very cold (the East Coast just had their snow storm) but the match ended up being quite fiery.
