Allez la France!
It's only a friendly, but France have a monumental game against what is quickly becoming one of
the strongest and most eye-catching Germany sides ever. Here's a gem for all fans that will be
supporting Les Bleus against the Germans, inspired by a certain Stromae song that has become
inescapable once you set foot in any given European nightclub.
It's all love here. Like the brute, unrefined relationship between Cavani and Lavezzi. These
handpicked eleven pieces are all splendid reads...
- Pitch Invasion on the District Ultras fan culture based around DC United.
- Sid Lowe for The Guardian on how Rayo Vallecano is a model for how to lose with grace
- Ryan O'Hanlon for The Run of Play (in exile) on Thomas Müller's distinct German-ness
- The Two Unfortunates discussing the irrefutable partnership between Unemployment and
Football
- Two Hundred Percent on how the Carling Cup was won
- The Other 87 Minutes tackles the issue of how to develop elite soccer players in the United
States
- IBWM on the prospect of bringing MLS across the street from Disney World.
Let's Return to MLS Paradise
Remember when David Beckham was supposedly off to Paris after lifting the MLS Cup in LA? That
was nearly four months ago. While the offseason was brief, there are scores of reasons to be
excited for the upcoming season of soccer stateside. MLS kicks off next Saturday (March 10th), and
the league only continues to strengthen.
Gerard Piqué, photobombed with love
Piqué started on the bench this past Sunday at the Vicente Calderon as Atlético Madrid hosted
Barcelona. Many questioned Pep Guardiola's decision, but this girl could not be happier with it.
Also, it needs to be noted that that Piqué seems to be sporting the MJ single glove look.
Italian artist Riccardo Guasco imagines football
Riccardo describes his inspiration to capture the physical world as a means to adequately come
to terms with his curiosity, but also to communicate with the world in a way that may leave a mark.
Living in Milan for a few years, it's not difficult to see how calcio crept in to his life.
A young Liverpool fan painfully celebrating the Carling Cup
Those 11 seconds pretty much sum up the experience for all Liverpool fans watching the game.
Still leaving Wembley with a smile...
Mind That Gap
There's nothing like some North London derby fanfare ahead of tomorrow's big match between
Arsenal and Tottenham at the Emirates. The match, in itself, is always one of the most enjoyable in
the Premier League.
Needless to say, tomorrow means so much to both sets of fans.
Through Ryu's Lens - Marseille vs Inter Milan, Champions League
As the slightest of underdogs, Marseille had 11 men with so much to prove against Inter Milan.
Though a deep run in the Champions League is always expected by fans of the Nerazzuri, this season
has been far from ideal for Inter.
50 Very Sensible Goals
What's a "sensible" goal you ask? Well, you'll have to ask Sweden's Marcus Walkin, the creator
of this video, but after watching these 50 I'm leaning towards nonsensical as my adjective
to describe what's featured on this list. Maybe Marcus is being modest.
The Howling Football - Raising Awareness for Animal Protection ahead of EURO 2012
With the European Championship right around the corner, Ukraine is a nation that will be hoisted
into the spotlight because of its role as tournament co-host with Poland. The Ukrainian government
has reportedly been killing thousands of stray dogs and cats to prepare for the immense month-long
event, expecting to welcome hundreds of thousands of tourists into its borders.
Fans coordinating snowball attacks? Approved.
Before their Europa League match kicked off last Thursday, Legia Warsaw fans decided that
creating a chant to go with a coordinated snowball attack on the Sporting Lisbon keepers would be
an excellent idea. And funny enough, they were absolutely right.
The Mönchengladbach way
Borussia Mönchengladbach are one of the biggest surprises in Europe this season. Facing
relegation at the end of last year, manager Lucien Favre has done a remarkable job in instilling a
brand new system in his players. The league table doesn't lie, and Mönchengladbach sit in second
place, above Bayern Munich and completely capable of snatching the Bundesliga title from Borussia
Dortmund.
Nelson Mandela: The Liverpool FC Supporter
We had to dig deep for this one. It turns out the legendary South African human rights and
anti-apartheid activist was able to meet Liverpool when the club was on tour in South Africa in the
summer of 1994. Serving as the President of South Africa in ‘94, Mandela was proudly presented
with a Reds shirt by John Barnes, the club's captain.
Through Ryu's Lens - AC Milan vs. Arsenal, San Siro
It was a dream night for AC Milan. It was a nightmare for Arsenal. With Milan wearing the red
and black at home, Kevin-Prince Boateng, Zlatan, and Robinho stole the show. Ryu Voelkel was in the
house of the Rossoneri to capture the rout and Thierry Henry's last moments with the Gunners.
The Sunday Ref
Telling the story of 69-year-old referee Francisco López, a man who continues to referee Sunday
league games after a life dedicated to football, The Sunday Ref is a short film focusing
on López's thoughts with regards to the world he lives in. This world, of course, is influenced by
the beautiful game, and he prefers to see it in its purest, most genuine form.
Happy Valentine's Champions League Day!
Here's to a wonderful night out with your +1 or an equally splendid night in watching your +11.
Although if you've played your cards tremendously well, enjoy tonight in the stands watching your
+11 with your +1.
By Azeem Banatwalla
The footballing world in its entirety knows what happened before and after the clash between
Manchester United and Liverpool yesterday. YouTube is a wonderful thing, isn't it? So there's not
much point repeating what happened, but in the aftermath of yesterday's events, debates have sprung
up, as they usually do, on Facebook status updates, newspaper websites, and pretty much every space
of internet brave enough to host a comments section.
Zambia win the African Cup of Nations, honor those lost 19 years ago in plane crash
After taking off from Libreville in Gabon 19 years ago, a military plane carrying most of the
squad crashed into the Atlantic Ocean. All 30 people on board, including 18 players, were killed.
Before the crash, it was a golden era for Zambia's football team.
Through Ryu's Lens: Onagawa + Tsunami
"Sometimes what you see on the screen isn't the same as what you see with your
eyes."
As you may have noticed, we haven't had a "Through Ryu's Lens" post from acclaimed Japanese
sports photographer Ryu Voelkel for about a month.
The Goalkeeper and the Void by Martz Azparren
