US Women defeat Canada in send off match

Amy Rodriguez's 86th minute goal gave the USWNT a 2-1 win in their Olympic send off match in Salt Lake City, UT. A 15th minute own goal by Canada's Carmelina Moscato was canceled out by a well worked Melissa Tancredi goal in the 57th minute. But second half substitute Rodriguez was in the right place at the right time to assure that the Americans headed to London on the back of a 2-1 victory.

On a night when Philadelphia Union's spirited fightback should have been the major talking point, another questionable refereeing decision will grab the headlines. With ten minutes remaining, referee Fotis Bazakos surprisingly pointed to the spot as Brian Ching fell theatrically to the deck under the softest of contact from Gabriel Farfan, allowing the Houston striker to steal three points for the Dynamo at BBVA Compass Stadium.

MLS action took a backseat in the world of soccer this week as the Euros got underway across the pond, the U.S. Men's National Team kicked off World Cup Qualifying in Tampa, and U.S. Open Cup action captivated fans across the country. While none of our locals saw MLS action, there were a few high points to come out of this week from US Open Cup and USL matches.

The United States men's national team rarely gets to play they way the women's national team plays. That is, like they are so superior to their opponent that the real struggle is internal. Not: "How should we play to win?" But: How should we play if we want to take lessons from this practice-type match?

Danny Mwanga is gone.

What he was:

  • The Union's number one overall pick in 2010
  • Extremely talented
  • Twenty years old
  • A second choice striker.

Of those details, two are facts, one is subjective, and one can be inferred from your collection of lineup cards (though not from the Union's promotional materials).

There was a moment in Tuesday's US Open Cup match that crystallized just how brilliant Philadelphia Union midfielder Michael Farfan can be and why we don't constantly see it.

In the 75th minute, he took the ball from a deep-lying central position, dribbled through three defenders, and sent a low through ball long to his brother, Gabriel, who was cutting down the left wing.

This game was a bit dead. With Clint Dempsey getting the start, the pre-game hype machine was ready for some fireworks, but Fabian Johnson's very late withdrawal during warmups threw something of a wet blanket over proceedings, and the game never sparked to life.

The first half was dull, frankly.
