The Philly Soccer Page at related • 0 views

Whether it's a confederations cup final or a friendly, nobody can help comparing themselves to Brazil. Last time the United States faced the Samba Boys they ran out to a two goal lead before collapsing in the second half. The South Americans gave no such head start on Wednesday night.

Neymar dispatched a penalty kick in the 11th minute and Thiago Silva doubled the lead fourteen minutes later.

Even a lengthy delay due to inclement weather could not dampen the Union's attacking spirits as Philadelphia Union dominated in a 3-0 win in the U.S. Open Cup over the USL's Rochester Rhinos.

After a Rochester mistake gifted Josue Martinez the opener five minutes into the match, Freddy Adu sealed the tie with a brace, tallying with his head in the 29th minute before converting a second half penalty to see off the subpar Rhinos.

With the dust still settling following Toronto FC's first victory of the season over the Union, one thing is now abundantly clear. The Union, not Toronto, may be the worst team in Major League Soccer.

In a first half where third-string goalkeeper Chris Konopka had to come up big and did in his first start for the Union and Ryan "Couldn't hit water if he fell out of a boat" Johnson got everything wrong, Toronto could have easily put two or three goals past the hapless Union.

Union 2–1 Schalke

The Union are now 4–0–0 in international friendlies at PPL Park after a very entertaining 2–1 win over Schalke 04. The official attendance was 7,464 which, as is usually the case with attendance figures, seems generous. Whatever.

In a wet and wild finish at PPL Park, rookie Chandler Hoffman scored his first goal for the Union, seeing off Bundesliga foes Schalke 04 2–1. Played in the open, attacking spirit of a friendly, Schalke had the better of the chances over the match, but the home side saved the best for last when Hoffman latched onto fellow rookie Ray Gaddis' square ball before dispatching it beyond Lars Unnerstall, sending those who had weathered the second half downpour into euphorics.

In terms of international friendlies, Schalke 04 falls somewhere between an English team with no strikers (Everton) and a Spanish team intent on reminding us they have nothing to play for (Madrid).

The Germans have stars. They also have some very intriguing young players who (gasp!) have gotten regular minutes early in their careers.

This week's Philadelphia Player of the Week is ...

Nobody.

We can't.

We tried!

We did. We really did.

The six of us scratched our heads. Ed Farnsworth pawed the air helplessly. Adam Cann looked for a sign. Greg Orlandini took the thinking man pose and got stuck there.

Union v Schalke friendly

At Tuesday's press conference, Schalke manager Huub Stevens said, "We're here with a strong team, the strongest team we can have right now, guys like Raul, Klaas-Jan Huntelaar and Jermaine Jones. If they feel good enough they'll play.

The earliest internationals in Philadelphia involved English clubs such as the Pilgrims and the Corinthians, teams imbued with the spirit of amateurism who embarked on North American tours between 1905 and 1911 that were motivated both by the desire to show Americans how the game of soccer was meant to be played and to make money.

Philadelphians Abroad: Parke shuts out

Jeff Parke wasn't too thrilled about getting unexpectedly benched in April. So when the Seattle Sounders center back earned his way back into Seattle's starting lineup, he didn't waste the opportunity.

Parke manned the center this week for Seattle as the Western Conference club posted consecutive shutouts this week against Los Angeles and Philadelphia, with the two clubs posting just two combined shots on goal against Seattle.

Hi Friends.

Like many who had the opportunity to view the Union in Seattle on Saturday, I was left without words.

Leaving the analyzing of lineups and formations to others, what I'd like to do is ask you all, seriously, "Who should come here?"

I've heard we don't have any money for DP's (Why?

Analysis & player ratings: Union 0-1 Sounders

After grabbing their first two victories of 2012, the Union have lost two on the trot and are back to square one. Against a makeshift Sounders lineup on Saturday at Century Link Field, the Union were completely outplayed. For the second straight match the defense was under siege throughout and were it not for some dreadful finishing from the hosts, and the intervention of MacMath's crossbar, the scoreline would have more accurately reflected Seattle's supremacy.

The last time the Union traveled to Seattle to take on the Sounders, they ran out 2-0 winners at Century Link Field. On Saturday afternoon there would be no repeat performance as the Union never looked like scoring, with Seattle coming out comfortable 1-0 winners.

Mauro Rosales put the hosts ahead in the 63rd minute and the Sounders easily could have had more were it not for two balls off the wood work and some sharp goalkeeping from Zac MacMath.

Philadelphia Athletics historian Rich Westcott writes of Columbia Ball Park, "The park functioned as a major league stadium for just eight seasons starting in 1901. During that period, however, it helped to give birth to a new league, was the site of one World Series and was the ballpark in which numerous future Hall of Famers launched their careers.

In 2011, the Union had scored only 5 goals in the first seven games but their record was 4–2–1 instead of 2–4–1 as it is now. The defensive solidity that marked 2011 was unexpected and proved decisive for the first half of the season as the Union struggled to find consistent goalscoring.

Zac MacMath is ranked at No. 10 on the latest Castrol Weekly Top 20. In the Full Castrol Index, MacMath comes in at No. 29, followed by Sheanon Williams at No. 70 and Brian Carroll at No. 78. The previous highest ranked Union player was (I think) Danny Califf at No.

It took Danny Mwanga eight minutes to do what Lionard Pajoy hasn't done in 367: Create a goal.

If that one play isn't a good enough reason of why Mwanga needs to replace Pajoy in Philadelphia Union's starting lineup, here are a few more.

Dismantle the goal: Philly-San Jose

Soccer is a blame game. Goals aren't common, so when you give one up, everyone goes looking for someone to blame. But is it that simple?

Long-time PSP readers know I like to dissect goals. (I play center back. What do you expect?) So let's play.

We'll pick out the first San Jose goal, shown in the video below, not just because it's an absolute clinic of good attacking soccer, but also because the defensive breakdown may not be where it seemed to be.
