New England Manager Steve Nicol put it best: "Both teams were as bad defensively as each other."

In a game that featured eight goals—two by way of penalty kicks—the Union overcame a three-goal deficit to salvage a draw at home against the Eastern Conference bottom-dwelling Revolution on Wednesday night.

Freddy Adu said all the right things.

The eyes of the City and the League—dare I say the world?—were focused on the press conference almost four weeks ago, witnessing the "official" reunion between a former-teenage phenom and his hard-nosed coach.

Justin Mapp was active, involved and positive. Sebastien Le Toux scored a fine open-play goal. Zac MacMath played 45 minutes of shutout ball and saved a breakaway.

And the Union still lost.

No shots, but who to blame?

An indifferent opening half-hour turned into a desperate chase for a tying goal.

The real reason the Union aren’t winning

It's time to accept that this is who Philadelphia Union is right now:

They're good enough to beat bad teams, draw mediocre teams, and lose to good ones.

The Union have won one game in the last two months and just two in the last three months. Their record since June 1: 2 wins, 4 losses and 8 draws.

With the prospect of no Carlos Valdes in the back line to face Real Salt Lake, last week we looked at the defender statistics for the Philadelphia Union through the first 24 games of the season. In doing so, the numbers confirmed what was already a generally held opinion: the Union defense has suffered since the departure of Jordan Harvey.

It's official: Mondragon has an extra-articular phalanx fracture. Out 2-4 weeks. From Emedicine: "Extra-articular fractures of the distal phalanx are common and are associated with significant soft-tissue injury. Most distal phalangeal fractures are crush injuries from a perpendicular force.

At a conference call Monday afternoon, Zac MacMath talked to reporters about his first half in MLS, how he found out he was going in, and  what he needs to do to help the team reach the playoffs.

"I didn't really know for sure til 7-8 mins left in halftime," MacMath said. I was already out there warming up in case and then our goalkeeper coach Rob Vartughian came out and just starting warming up and everything and that's when I knew I was going in.

Two goals in the first 26 minutes from Real Salt Lake sealed a home win over the Philadelphia Union at Rio Tinto Stadium on Saturday night.

Sebastien Le Toux's fine volleyed strike in the 30th minute was only half what the Union needed as they fell to another Western Conference opponent on the road.

Union

Ahhhhh, a weekend with a game...

And, what's this, not just a game but a potential signing? Joe Tait, the young defender on trial with the Union who scored the final goal in the team's 5–2 win over Harrisburg City Islanders last week, appears set to sign with the club. After messages on Twitter from himself (follow him at @joetait1) and Stuart Hayers (@Stuhayers)—his former coach at PDL side Baton Rouge Capitals and founder of the S&B Kinesis sports management company of which Tait is a client—hinting at a move that have since been removed from Twitter (check out this from the ever Twitter-vigilant Brotherly Game for their content), Hayers sent a tweet that mentions his S&B Kinesis co-founder, an assistant coaches and the owner of the Capitals early Friday morning saying, "fat lady is clearing her throat.

A cursory look at Saturday's matchup between fourth place (in the east) Philadelphia Union and fifth place (in the west) Real Salt Lake would indicate these teams are in similar places. Mid-table, low scoring, strong defense. Don't be fooled.

RSL has played the same number of games and have five more points than Philadelphia.

With a weather-induced fixture logjam in their immediate future, the Union need to start scoring goals (and earning points) quickly. Yet, the attack continues to be lacking as the Union languish near the bottom of the MLS table in almost every offensive statistical category.

Unwelcome news for WPS: The CEO is stepping down after less than a year on the job.

Paul Riley spoke about the future of WPS in a conference call yesterday. Any time Paul Riley speaks, everyone should listen. Two people should be allowed to call a joint session of congress: The President of the United States of America and Paul Riley, President of AwesomeQuotes.
