On Tuesday, the Union announced that Brad Knighton, the presumptive second string goalkeeper behind new signing Faryd Mondragon, had been waived.

The announcement was met with shock in some quarters. After all, that leaves the Union with, at present, only two keepers: Mondragon and first round SuperDraft pick Zac MacMath.

Match Fit USA has gotten its hands on a copy of the GQ UK issue that features the Sons of Ben. Apparently, it isn't very complimentary: "Americans, he tells GQ UK's football savvy readers over the course of a few pages, are poseurs." MFUSA uses the GQ UK piece to do a fine job of both analyzing and defending the emerging and still developing supporters group culture in the US.

Then, while we waited for the opening of our new stadium we began an extended string of away games that demonstrated what can only be described as the season-long woeful state of our away form.

The Union announced tonight that they have waived goalkeeper Brad Knighton, who did not practice with the team when they opened training camp yesterday. Knighton started eight games last year, stealing the starting role from Chris Seitz for the last two months of the season. He posted a 1.10 GAA and was on the field for the Union's first clean sheet ever.

It's official, the Union have signed Faryd Mondragon and Carlos Valdes. From the announcement on the Union website:

"We are very happy to have agreed to deals with both Faryd and Carlos," said Team Manager Peter Nowak. "It is great to have an experienced player, such as Faryd, show his desire and commitment to become a member of the Philadelphia Union family.

Much has been made of the record breaking selection of seven players from the University of Akron in the first round of the MLS SuperDraft.

Rightly so. After all, five of them were among the first eight picks in the draft.

That coach Caleb Porter and his staff have gotten it right when it comes to player development is only underscored when you recall that five of this year's Generation adidas class of nine also played at Akron.

Maurice Edu returned from injury to score the final goal as Rangers hammered Hamilton Academic yesterday. Edu had been down since November, but he has featured regularly for the Scottish side this season and should be the American every team scrambles to pick up.

According to the Geman newspaper Nürnberg Zeitung, Toronto FC are also interested in Marek Mintal. In the report, FC Nürnberg Sports Director Martin Bader confirms the interest in Mintal from the Union: "There is a free request." The report goes on to say that "Mintal himself was tight-lipped yesterday and would not comment on the speculation surrounding his future.

The Philadelphia Independence selected midfielder Sinead Farrelly from the University of Virginia with their first pick in the 2011 WPS Draft in Baltimore on Friday.

The Havertown-native was a semifinalist in 2009 and 2010 for the Hermann Trophy and was named to the 2010 NSCAA/Performance Subaru Women's NCAA Division I All-America Team.

The Union announced on Friday that they have declined the option to renew midfielder Toni Stahl's contract.

Stahl, a second round pick—17th overall—in the 2010 SuperDraft, started one game for the Union last year. He played 41 minutes in that game, the Union's season opener against Seattle, before being sent off after reason a second yellow card.

And while some first rounders have been productive and others have been duds, no goalie selected in round one has had a long and influential career for the team that picked him. The four year deal is worth approximately $12 million.

At the beginning of the 1909-1910 Pennsylvania League season, Kensington's Hibernians, the reining league champs, seemed a sure bet to repeat as champions. But the Tacony team had other ideas. Led by what the Philadelphia Inquirer described as "the splendid half-back line" of team captain Hector McDonald, former Scotland junior international Robert Morrison, and Percy Potts, the Tacony team defeated the Hibs 2-0 on October 23, 1909.
