The Iraqi winger is not traveling for their upcoming matches.

With the Seattle Sounders missing many key members for their mid-week match against Columbus Crew SC, there were hopes that Justin Meram could also be called in for Iraq's national team for a trio of games coming up. The first of which is a friendly in Basra against Jordan on Thursday June 1.

Without Clint Dempsey, Jordan Morris, Will Bruin and Henry Wingo available in the midweek game, the Sounders will turn to... we have no idea.

Thanks to Bruce Arena calling up Clint Dempsey and Jordan Morris outside of the international window; thanks to Will Bruin's elbow being unfortunately dislocated; thanks to Henry Wingo's season stalling out with an injured ankle; the Seattle Sounders are going to be forced to reach as far down into the roster's attacking band as they were when Svensson-Delem-Roldan started at right back.

Just as the MLS anthem played both teams started their walk out. In Portland that means that the Timbers Army leads P-T, F-C. They have a drum with a double beat that sounds the constant rhythm. As usual, the scoreline is the most important number in soccer—but here are a few other stats that help paint the picture of this match.

The Sounders-Timbers match will have quite the lead-up on May 27, with FOX set to broadcast Chelsea-Arsenal FA Cup Final live prior to the first kick of Sounders-Timbers.

Osvaldo Alonso has cemented his place in the pantheon of MLS defensive midfielders, and, so far this season, has continued to stave off father time.

Stuttering Sounders offense conceals deeper concerns

Defensive imbalance can't be resolved by health.

With apologies to Antoine Lavoisier ... soccer defense is neither created nor destroyed — it can only be converted between threats to the midfield defensive line, the backline, and the goal line. Every possession of an opposing team ends with a turnover, and the most dangerous turnovers happen to be shots at the defended goal.

The only stat that matters is goals, but here are a few others to ponder

Despite Toronto FC fielding a Giovinco-less team at CenturyLink Field on Saturday, their stalwart defending and a little help from referee Jair Marrufo helped them to a 1-0 win over the Seattle Sounders. There would be no epic comeback on Saturday like last week against the New England Revolution, and the Sounders have a lot of questions to answer as they finish their two-match home stand with just a single point.

Finding the keystones in a thrilling, complex match can be difficult

Saturday's 3-3 draw was a wild tactical whirlwind for the Seattle Sounders. The Sounders flailed fruitlessly against the New England goal for 75 minutes while succumbing to three immaculately crafted counterattacks — yes, Stefan Frei totally gaffed but it was a knuckler from an unmarked man in a zone overload on a counter from 35 yards — before overloading New England with a ferocity of attacks that was as desperate as it was unyielding for the final 15 minutes.

Seattle Sounders make team and league history in comeback

It took a lot of pain to make that kind of record.

Coming back from a three goal deficit is rare in global soccer. It is not supposed to happen. Within MLS, only ten teams have managed to claw back from three goals down to earn points. Seattle Sounders join Montreal Impact as the two teams to do so in 2017.

TL;DR it was a lot.

Stefan Frei knew he messed up (and even used far more colorful language in his mea culpa). He knew that his flub was potentially going to cost the Seattle Sounders. And maybe it did. But when Osvaldo Alonso's header hit the back of the net, there probably wasn't anyone more relieved than Frei.

Brian Schmetzer didn't give too much reason for optimism on the health front.

As they have for much of the 2017 MLS season so far, the Seattle Sounders went into Saturday's match against the New England Revolution in a "pretty banged up" state, as Brian Schmetzer has said. The starting back line that faced New England drew praise for its clean sheets against Atlanta United and the LA Galaxy, but they found themselves exposed quickly against the Revs' counter attack.
