Home teams went 4-4-3 +3 in week 9.

On the road the Portland Timbers twice held the lead, but couldn't scrape out a win. The 2-2 result by two Supporters' Shield favorites leaves both somewhat satisfied. FC Dallas fans say it showed resolve. The rest of the league just sees it as an opportunity to catch the favorites.

The problem with erasing a three-goal deficit is being in one to begin with.

It wasn't all just a dream. We really did just witness what was about as unbelievable and strange a game as the Seattle Sounders have ever played. It wasn't just the six total goals or even that the Sounders erased a 3-0 deficit in the final 16 minutes.

After nearly 75 minutes of constant attack from Seattle, one finally stuck

Despite having most of the possession and 20 shots after nearly 75 minutes, the Sounders weren't able to stick one in the net until Nicolas Lodeiro latched onto a cross near the top of the box. His shot bounced off a Revolution defender and past a diving Cody Cropper to make it 3-1 in the 75th minute.

Defensive cracks let the Revs go up early, but the Sounders came back to secure a point

Seattle Sounders head coach Brian Schmetzer sent the same lineup out against the Revolution that won 3-0 in LA last weekend. For a goalkeeper like Seattle Sounders' Stefan Frei, errors on the pitch aren't a common occurrence. But in his team's 3-3 draw with the New England Revolution on Sunday, a big mistake by Frei allowed the visitors to go up 1-0 fairly early in the match against the run of play.

Everything that went right for Seattle last week went wrong for them this week.

It was the best of performances, followed by the worst of performances, it was the age of wise passes, it was the age of foolish challenges, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of players of the week, it was the season of Darkness, it was missing Hope, it was the despairing for Winters, we had everything last week, we had nothing this week, we were all going direct to top of the table, we were all going direct the other way — in short, this season has been so far oscillating, that some of the wisest commentators insisted on its being received, for good or for awful, in the superlative degree of comparison only.

The South Bay has not been good to the Seattle Sounders. When facing the San Jose Earthquakes in Levi's Stadium, Buck Shaw Stadium, or today's host Avaya Stadium the Sounders are just 1-5-3 -7. But, some of that was because of the small pitch at Buck Shaw.

The Earthquakes have historically been a problem team for Seattle, and Brian Schmetzer wants to change that.

Four games into the 2017 season and the Seattle Sounders currently sit in sixth place in the West with five points. Considerably better than their 2016 start, but a little short of the expectations that come with winning the MLS Cup last season.

In 2017 the success of the San Jose Earthquakes depends on Anibal Godoy. That Panamanian midfielder is their engine. Saturday's match (7:30 p.m., Q13) is also a test of the ‘Quakes defense. They will be without Victor Bernardez when they host the Seattle Sounders.

Numbers agree, Clint Dempsey and Nico Lodeiro work magic together

Their slow start to 2017 is nothing to get worked up about.

It doesn't take a tactical genius or a statistical whiz to suss out that the Seattle Sounders play really well when Nicolas Lodeiro and Clint Dempsey are on the field together. One need only look at the four times they suited up together last year to see what the fully operational battle station looks like.

For a team like the Seattle Sounders, it's easy to miss much of the hard work that goes on behind the scenes. Because Frei starts nearly every match in which he's healthy, most fans don't get too many glimpses of the backup keepers.

There was a lot to consider when re-watching the Seattle Sounders' disappointing 0-0 draw with Atlanta United on Friday night. On one hand, Atlanta was the highest-scoring team in the league, and Seattle's backline had only one of its usual starters but still earned a clean sheet. On the other hand, while the Sounders created quality chances, they failed to put much of real substance on frame or take advantage of their superior play throughout most of the game.
