Interestingly enough, that was the first Seattle Sounders match I had attended.

Although that overstates the degree to which the overall roster has changed from year to year — a host of Academy players and First-Teamers on loan will invariably have spent time with S2 last year, just as they did in 2016 — there's no denying that continuity has been in short supply.

"They have a target on their back, maybe it's the target right here above the crest ... teams are going to come out and press us. That's the lesson we learned" -Brian Schmetzer

The Seattle Sounders were hoping to continue a fortunate pattern of stealing a point in Houston, and after a horrendous first half they nearly pulled off just that in the second 45.

Plenty of encouraging signs in Sounders’ season-opening loss

Joevin Jones' starring performance and Clint Dempsey playing 90 minutes two huge positives.

Of all the ways the Seattle Sounders hoped to begin their title defense, I think it can safely be said that the first half of Saturday's game was not one of them. The Sounders were roundly outplayed, looked sluggish and frankly like a team that wasn't quite ready to play meaningful matches.

In his first MLS game since August, Deuce made it happen

If you had any doubt about whether or not Clint Dempsey was back, here's your answer. Despite being 2-0 down, the Sounders have looked more lively in the second half, especially left back Joevin Jones. After what seems like his sixth or seventh big run this half, Jones' cross bounced past Jordan Morris and the Houston defense to Dempsey, who took a beat before burying it in the net.

Seattle remains winless in Houston.

Despite a late surge, the Seattle Sounders opened 2017 with a 2-1 loss. The Houston Dynamo dominated the first half. Their posture in the final forty-five gave Seattle hope. Sounders have yet to win in Houston. Clint Dempsey scored his first goal since 21 Aug 2016, but it was a goal for honor not a result.

Steve Zakuani did an excellent job getting Dempsey to move outside his talking points.

Over my eight years covering the Seattle Sounders, there probably hasn't been a more frustrating player to interview than Clint Dempsey. It's not that he's a bad interview, per se, it's that he rarely provides anything approaching real insight.
