Politics is forcing its way into soccer; soccer should win.
On Jan. 27, 2017 President Donald Trump signed an Executive Order that suspends visas and other immigration matters from seven specific nations as well as suspended the Refugee Admissions program for fiscal year 2017 pending review.
In lead-up to the USMNT's first game under Bruce Arena, Sunil reminds us of the bigger picture.
Sunil Gulati publicly addressed how the current political climate will impact the United State's efforts for a World Cup bid, saying that it runs secondary to resolving the executive order.
There don't appear to be any offers yet, but several outlets have reported his preference is to go home if he leaves Sevilla.
The Hiroshi Kiyotake situation may be a bit more complicated that it looked just 24 hours ago. Although Sevilla still plans to sign Walter Montoya — which would force them to clear an non-EU roster spot — there's at least a possibility that the move can't be fully completed until the summer transfer window.
Bruce Arena says he wants Dempsey to focus on Sounders, getting healthy.
As Bruce Arena plans for World Cup Qualifying, he will be without Clint Dempsey. During the pregame of the friendly between the United States and Serbia, ESPN's Taylor Twellman said Arena told him he will not call the Seattle Sounders forward/midfielder into the USMNT.

Three Big Storylines:
- This will be Bruce Arena's first game back with the USMNT since taking over from the fired Jurgen Klinsmann on November 22nd.
Gustav Svensson has reportedly signed with the Sounders to provide defensive midfield depth.
To call the defensive midfield position an area of weakness for the Seattle Sounders would be absurd. Osvaldo Alonso and Cristian Roldan are, after all, one of the top pairings in MLS.
But behind them?
Opening of camp begins to fill out the role Sounders 2 and its players will fill in 2017.
Sounders 2 is at least a couple weeks off from their own training camp but their involvement in the opening week of first team training is starting to offer an outline of what S2 will look like in 2017.
Like every 2016 Seattle Sounders player, Alfaro won MLS Cup.
Tony Alfaro went from second round draft pick to fringe member of the Seattle Sounders gameday 18 in just a year. The Cal State-Dominguez Hills product played a tiny bit of stay-at-home left back, but was mostly the fourth central defender on the roster in 2016.
Out of favor with Sevilla FC in La Liga, Hiroshi Kiyotake is looking for a new team to take him. Rumors are that Seattle Sounders FC and a few teams in Japan are finalists for the regular on the Japanese national team. The rumored fee is about €6 million (currently about $6.5 million US). That fee would be the sixth largest paid by an MLS team, right between fees paid for Clint Dempsey and Nicolas Lodeiro.
The backup fullback will face off against Sounders teammates Brad Evans, Chad Marshall, and Jordan Morris
Even Seattle Sounders FC's depth players are getting called into CONCACAF teams. As Jamaica looks to rebound from a poor World Cup Qualifying cycle, they are set to face the United States (Feb.
Clint Dempsey provides the highlight of the afternoon.
The last day of practice before heading off to Arizona to continue pre-season started off indoors. Originally using both fields, the MLS Cup Champion Sounders were soon ushered off of one field for what looked to be a girls U4 team. (Schmetzer's look was priceless.
Stars defeat Turlock 7-3, to face Soles de Sonora and Atletico Baja next.
KENT, WA - On Friday, January 20th the Tacoma Stars (8-3) faced the Turlock Express (5-8) in front of a crowd of 4,064 people, the largest in the current era of the franchise.
The game started slow as neither team scored on just three shots on goal in the first quarter of play.
He even got married during the offseason!
Even though the Seattle Sounders started training camp earlier this week, a few notable faces were missing. Jordan Morris, Brad Evans, and Chad Marshall were in US national team camp, but another important player was also absent: midfielder Nicolas Lodeiro.
S2 opens against Sacramento Republic, followed by travel to Vancouver
Unlike the first team, Sounders 2 will open their season at home by hosting the Sacramento Republic at Starfire Sports in Tukwila on Sunday, March 26. Their second match of the season will be on the road at Vancouver Whitecaps 2, whose first match of the season is on the road at LA Galaxy II.

Guacamole, or guac if you don't like syllables, season is starting. It is a season that starts with the Super Bowl and ends when avocado prices go over two dollars a piece. Here's how you make the best guac;
- 2 avocados
- 2 dashes salt
- minced shallot
- minced jalapeno, half seeds removed
- dash garlic
- hint of lime juice
Mash all together with your manual potato masher.
Hiroshi Kiyotake's exit is all but confirmed after the signing of Walter Montoya.
Hiroshi Kiyotake is all but finished at Sevilla. The Japanese midfielder was already rumored to be on his way out — primarily because he has failed to break into third-best team in Spain's lineup — but now his fate is all but assured after the signing of Walter Montoya as Sevilla will need to clear a non-EU roster spot.
Fisher won the 2016 MLS Cup with Seattle Sounders FC.
Out of Portmore, Jamaica via the University of New Mexico, the 25-year-old Oniel Fisher earned his way into playing time by showing that he could play both as a right back and a left back. He also could earn more calls into the Jamaican National Team.
Former Sounders midfielder has been a full participant in preseason training.
There will be a, perhaps, surprising name on the list of players traveling with the Seattle Sounders to Tucson, Ariz. as they take their preseason training on the road: Steve Zakuani.
What at first seemed like a simply exercise to get into shape — something the 29-year-old did at the end of last year — is now something a bit more.
Sounders open training camp with some intriguing names.
Opening training camp as the defending MLS Cup champions has a certain ring to it, doesn't it? The Seattle Sounders did just that this week, and there were no shortage of storylines.
The most interesting was probably the health of Clint Dempsey.
It turns out expansion teams get a lot of Garber Bux to spend these days. Chicago may host the All-Star Game, but not in Bridgeview. Could Earthquakes fans find a way to cheer for Landon Donovan again ?
Major League Soccer
Fox Sports profiles another potential MLS expansion city (or area); this time it's whatever you want to call the combination of Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill and the immediate region.
Nouhou Tolo is good—but he wants to be even better.
Even though Seattle Sounders general manager Garth Lagerwey noted offhand this week that S2's Nouhou Tolo would be on the first team roster this season, the club made Tolo's signing official today. The 19-year-old Cameroonian defender impressed the coaching staff enough in his 24 matches with S2 that they decided to promote him to the squad in order to back up Joevin Jones at left-back.
Yes, we have your daily Clint Dempsey update too
Day two in Soundersville started out much the same as the first, except without the number of fans at Starfire. Warmups were done in lines and players' preferred groups began to emerge. It will be interesting to see what happens when the missing players return.
Sounders begin their 2017 campaign, as does a new Sounder At Heart photographer.
First day of training is in the books. You'll notice a few familiar faces.
Sounders weren't the team who made it.
Perhaps the most intriguing rumor this offseason was that the Seattle Sounders offered Boca Juniors $14 million for Dario Benedetto. That would have been a MLS record transfer fee and seemed to suggest the Sounders were ready to open their checkbooks quite unlike they ever have before.
Also, Landon Donovan may be retired, Giovinco may be leaving, and the discussion of pro/rel in America may be complete.
According to The Seattle Times, Brian Schmetzer's key enemy of this preseason is complacency. This is, understandably, seen as a constant threat in the wake of winning the MLS Cup.
Sounders are definitely in 2018 tournament.
CONCACAF made a somewhat confusing announcement on Monday about the future of their largest club tournament. Although the broad format was clear enough — Canadian and American teams will have five of the 16 spots in the 2018 tournament — the particulars of how those teams will qualify was less so.
Left back is third player ever signed directly from USL affiliate.
Seattle Sounders FC announced on Thursday that they have signed Cameroonian defender Nouhou Tolo. He spent the 2016 season with S2 and appeared in 24 games — all starts.
Tolo joined S2 in April 2016 after playing for Rainbow FC in Cameroon.
The 21-year-old was the Golden Boot award winner in the 2016 W-League
Seattle Reign FC announced today the signing of Australian international forward Larissa Crummer, pending receipt of her P-1 Visa and International Transfer Certificate (ITC). With Crummer's signing, Seattle now has filled all of its five international roster spots.
Sounders performance analyst happy with Dempsey's progress.
Seattle Sounders FC's annual beep test establishes baseline fitness. Getting a baseline maximum aerobic heart rate is more important than winning it. Since professional soccer players are involved, though, it becomes a competition.
Alternate headline: Local man visits family.
I'm not going to lie, writing this story feels a bit weird. It was only a few days ago that I wrote about how I wasn't really buying the Fredy Montero-to-Sounders rumors. But I find myself revisiting this after Montero himself Tweeted out a photo of he and his family hanging out at the Seattle Roastery with a not-so-subtle message:
Despite the turnover, Schmetzer expects Pineda to easily take over Ante Razov's duties
For the first in his coaching career, Seattle Sounders head coach Brian Schmetzer is overseeing a full MLS preseason with the club. Having stepped up to the position during the middle of last season after the departure of Sigi Schmid, Schmetzer is having to make many choices that he never did while coaching at the USL level or as an assistant to Schmid.
Oalex Anderson won an MLS Cup in 2016.
Blessed with amazing speed, Oalex Anderson may be the best active player from St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Just 21, the youngster will have to recover from a major knee injury suffered just prior to MLS Cup before he finds a new team, or returns to the Seattle Sounders.
The defense of MLS Cup 2016 started on a cold Tuesday in front of fans and media.
After a very short offseason, Seattle Sounders veterans and trialists alike stepped back onto the practice field vying for spots on a team set to defend its very first MLS Cup.
There were a few major pieces missing, namely Brad Evans, Chad Marshall, Stefan Frei, Nico Lodeiro, and Jordan Morris.
Seattle's training camp starts with no big surprise players, Diskerud is out of the mix, and goals of the week.
Tuesday signified the official start of the 2017 for the Seattle Sounders. Going into the season there will be many changes to the team: here are four to start with.
All you need to know about the first day of Sounders preseason training
Among the more intriguing names on the list of trialists at the first day of Seattle Sounders was former USMNT prospect Gale Agbossoumonde.
Still just 25, the former U.S. Soccer Young Athlete of the Year (2010) is fresh off his most productive professional season, making 28 starts for the Ft.
Veteran full back traded to Atlanta United.
Tyrone Mears has officially joined Atlanta United, as a trade was announced on Tuesday. The Seattle Sounders will receive $50,000 in General Allocation Money as part of the transaction.
This is the second time this offseason that Atlanta has sent the Sounders GAM.
The goalkeeper's ankle injury is severe enough to keep him out for "multiple weeks"
Perhaps it wasn't a huge surprise to Seattle Sounders fans when goalkeeper Stefan Frei was called up to the US national team for the first time this month. Fans in Seattle have known about Frei's quality for the past couple seasons, but the former Swiss youth international really came onto the international radar after his stunning performance in the MLS Cup final.
Sounders unlikely to add more than two players beyond those expected in camp already.
After winning MLS Cup, the Seattle Sounders immediately started rebuilding their roster. President of Soccer Garth Lagerwey's goals were to get younger, more durable, and to further integrate Sounders 2 and the Academy.
Sounders happy with progress Designated Player made in offseason.
There is still no timeline for when Clint Dempsey will be able to return to regular game action, but he has been cleared to train as the Seattle Sounders formally opened their 2017 preseason.
Dempsey, who was a full participant in the session, is on a pathway that could see him appear in preseason games, and it's at least possible that he'll be ready at the start of the season.
Gale Agbossoumonde among the notable names at first day of training.

I think we're all a little sick of hearing about the Kremlin.
Former promoter and SuperSonics executive Bob Walsh died yesterday at age 76; he was known for being a key part of the Sonics organization during their 1979 championship season and for bringing 13 major national sporting events to Seattle.
That MLS Cup sure helps, but there aren't many moves to really second guess.
It was a little more than two years ago that Garth Lagerwey was hired as the Seattle Sounders GM and President of Soccer. It didn't happen all at once, but just seven of the 26 players currently listed on the Sounders roster — and certainly less than half of the 2017 starters — were here when he took over.
The midfield was a concern at the end of 2016. Now Seattle has plenty of options.
Laura Harvey strikes again.
Seattle Reign FC has acquired Canadian International midfielder Diana Matheson from the Washington Spirit in exchange for the rights to midfielder Arielle Ship, who was the 26th pick in the 2017 NWSL College Draft.
Two defenders, one Goalkeeper will represent the Seattle Sounders Academy at U.S. U18 camp.
After a recent set of call ups that saw no Sounders tapped for the United States U20s the Sounders organization will be glad to have three youth players at the upcoming U18 camp in Bradenton, FL. Trey Muse (Goalkeeper), Jake Morris (Left back), and Stirling Russell (Right back) will all get a chance to prove their worth to Omid Namazi who has pegged the Jan.
We're ignoring past years' group stage and just jumping into the major events that defined Puget Sound soccer in 2016.
The Sounder at Heart Annual Awards wrap up with voting for the Moment of the Year in 2016. Past winners, in order from ‘09 to ‘15, are fans meeting the team after winning the Open Cup in DC, Nyassi brace to win the Open Cup repeat, Alonso's dagger to earn Open Cup three-peat, Zakuani returns to MLS play & exchanges jerseys with Mullan, Traore's goal to draw level with Tigres in CCL play, Pappa pickpockets Pinedo to secure Supporters' Shield, and the Red Card Wedding.
How the Seattle Sounders fit still in isn't entirely clear.
Starting in the Summer of 2017, the CONCACAF Champions League will contain 31 teams in a new format of dual tournaments. The first tournament will be contested between 16 clubs from the Caribbean and Central America. That winner will enter the second phase of the new CCL in 2018 competing against MLS, Liga MX and a selection of other CONCACAF clubs in a straight knockout tournament starting in February 2018 and ending in May of that year.
Following a two assist performance this weekend, Seattle's own appears to have found his footing across the pond.
Deandre Yedlin seems to have found his footing across the pond and has put together a string of strong performances for Newcastle in the Championship. Following his two assist performance versus Rothertham on Saturday, some were calling him 'the best fullback in the Championship".
Despite fielding multiple coaching offers, Pineda said Seattle is the "best place I can be."
The Seattle Sounders announced this week that former midfielder Gonzalo Pineda had joined Brian Schmetzer's coaching staff for the 2017 season. Pineda, who also played for the Mexico national team, spent two seasons in Seattle, his only tenure outside of Mexico.
Herculez Gomez has high praise for former Sounders teammate.
Aaron Kovar once again spent the offseason on trial with several teams in the United Kingdom. Kovar's recent twitter activity suggests he is back in Seattle preparing for the start of Sounders' training camp on Tuesday
Still just 23, Kovar will be heading into his fourth professional season and it will almost certainly be his most important to date.
Dylan Remick earned a lifetime treble with the Sounders. He won MLS Cup in 2016 with the Supporters' Shield and US Open Cup in 2014.
Plagued by injury in 2016 Dylan Remick's time as the Seattle Sounders backup left back came to an end shortly after winning MLS Cup. Remick is now with the Houston Dynamo where he will be the understudy of DaMarcus Beasley.
This isn't necessarily a sequel to American Football, it's more the tale of a championship.
"It's just been one long down, and then one long up," says Jeremiah Oshan (you've heard of him) on the 2016 Seattle Sounders season in the upcoming LEVYfilms documentary. LEVYfilms got to explore the down and then up of 2016.
And apparently even Herculez Gomez has contributed to the cause.
Right around this time last year, Sounders fan Matt Oak made a rather bold promise:
@mattoak like if Sounders win a trophy this year I'll get this Celine Dion ass tattoo. And I don't Welch on bets like @mread531 — InsufferabO⭐️K (@mattoak) February 14, 2016
For a good chunk of the season that seemed like a rather safe prediction, as the Sounders seemed far more likely to have their worst-ever season than anything that would result in glory.
Tacoma defeated Cedar Rapids, Got help elsewhere
KENT, WA - The Tacoma Stars (7-3) and Ceder Rapids Rampage (8-3) both had bad luck on Friday the 13th as despite many first half chances the only goal that was found was courtesy of Stars midfielder Raphael Cox: his third of the campaign.
Jumping on ball upon the Ceder Rapids kickoff, and he stole the ball (in similar fashion to last week's performance when he scored in just seven seconds) and taking the strike himself, scored in just twenty-four seconds.
Right back appears ready to sign with a new team.
Tyrone Mears' first half of his debut MLS season left many suggesting he was the best right back in the league; by the midpoint of his second MLS season, opinions had dramatically changed. Mears closed out the season playing sound defense and was a key component of the Seattle Sounders' first-ever MLS Cup, only to have his contract option declined only hours after.
It can definitely stand alone but leaves a few questions.
Friday turned into Saturday, then turned into Sunday, and eventually into Tuesday but I finally saw Rogue One. My first rendezvous with the Star Wars franchise, well, excluding the one time I did not pay attention to episode four and those Family Guy versions.
A slide down the depth chart means joining Damion Lowe at the USL side makes sense for the homegrown player.
As two new homegrown players arrive, the Seattle Sounders have let another go. The USL's Tampa Bay Rowdies announced the addition of Darwin Jones to their roster. Jones joined Seattle before the 2015 season after a complicated but successful three years in college and PDL play.
He walks back the comments in a new interview. The Sounders have a pretty favorable 2017 schedule. Deloitte tells you which club made $735 million last season.
Tim Howard is pretty happy Jurgen Klinsmann is gone, in part because he felt like some of the players Klinsy brought in showed a "lack of passion and desire.
Here are three ways Seattle could work around Clint Dempsey's health status and Osvaldo Alonso's climbing salary as they look to bring in a new Designated Player.
The Sounders currently have three Designated Players on the roster: Clint Dempsey, Osvaldo Alonso, and Nicolas Lodeiro. Though it's possible only one of them will be a DP and/or on the roster by opening kick.
Some Twitter account says he's leaving China and possibly heading for the Sounders.
Fredy Montero was, undeniably, one of the most talented players to ever wear a Seattle Sounders uniform. His 47 goals and 34 assists still rank as franchise records, despite his having not played a game here since 2012.
The reigning MLS Cup champs will begin training next week at Starfire
Even though it still feels like the Seattle Sounders just won MLS Cup, the boys will be back in training next week. They will have their first day of training next Tuesday, January 24 at Starfire Sports training facility in Tukwila.
"Dave" is coming back for the 2017 season
As the Seattle Reign FC prepare for the 2017 season, their fifth in existence, another Reign Original will be on hand for it. The club announced today that Kiersten Dallstream re-signed with the team.
While listed as a forward, Dallstream has been a multi-role option for Laura Harvey, spending plenty of time on the defensive line, in the midfield, and up top.
Gonzalo Pineda is the newest addition to the staff.
The first of what appears to be several open coaching spots will go to a former Seattle Sounders player, Gonzalo Pineda. With Ante Razov leaving for LA Galaxy and Brian Schmetzer moving from First Assistant to Head Coach the staff should have at least a couple openings.
Like every 2016 Sounder, Tyler Miller is an MLS Cup champion.
At 23, Tyler Miller looks every bit like a future Seattle Sounders starting keeper - if he can keep earning time over 2017 addition Bryan Meredith. Miller was the bench keeper in MLS play in 2016, but may wind up the permanent S2 starter in 2017 to provide him more game reps.
From humble soccer beginnings he became Mr. Sounder.
When you chat with those within soccer that know Zach Scott something becomes quickly apparent - everyone respects him. Their respect for Mr. Sounder grows out of a few things - he treats everyone well; he works harder than anyone else; he dedicates himself to family; he sacrifices everything for his team, the Seattle Sounders FC.
Biomechnical injury issues at Real Madrid and a shiny new jersey sponsor for the Minnesota expansion side.
Minnesota United has not looked as promising with their roster as Atlanta United, but the Western expansion side set high targets as a franchise grabbing a massive local sponsor (hint its logo is a red target).
Henry Wingo and Seyi Adekoya grew up playing together in Seattle, and consulted each other before re-joining the Sounders
Perhaps it's obvious from the title, but the Sounders' newest crop of Homegrown Players are about as Seattle as they can get. Both UCLA forward Seyi (pronounced like "shay") Adekoya and University of Washington midfielder Henry Wingo are not only Seattle natives, they're actually longtime teammates.
The much anticipated sequel to last year's debut event will be held on Feb. 12.
When we did the first YachtCon last year, we really didn't know if we'd ever do another. Although we raised about $3,500 for the PBMU at Seattle Children's, it was a ton of work and sucked up a lot of bandwidth.
It's unclear what the Austrian plans to do next.
Although a return always seemed a bit unlikely, Andreas Ivanschitz made his departure from the Seattle Sounders official on Tuesday. The Austrian made the announcement on Twitter.
1/3 It's been a great pleasure being a part of the Sounders organization for the last 1 1/2 years.
Another versatile player gives Laura Harvey even more options.
Seattle Reign FC has announced the re-signing of Merritt Mathias for the 2017 NWSL season. Mathias, who joined Seattle from FC Kansas City in 2015, appeared in 37 matches for the club in the last two years and scoring three goals and getting two assists.
Seyi Adekoya and Henry Wingo will join the first team in 2017.
As had been rumored for a couple weeks, the Seattle Sounders have signed two more Homegrown Players ahead of the start of 2017 training camp. Seyi Adekoya and Henry Wingo become the eighth and ninth Homegrown Players signed to the Sounders first team.
Coach Schmetzer is getting his Pro license, Dwyer is looking for USA love, and bikes galore in Goals of the Week.
Seattle Sounder legend Alan Hinton caught up with BigAppleSoccer.com editor Michael Lewis to discuss Seattle's championship, coach, and the city he loves.
The Homegrown Player earned his 3rd major trophy in 2016.
While we write player profiles recapping the 2016 season, a season with an MLS Cup, it is also important to recognize that Seattle Sounders players and staff go through real life just as we do. In 2016 Darwin Jones lost his father. The team wore black armbands in support of one of their own in their April 16th win over the Union.
Juventus enters a 'new era' with logo unveiling
Chicago made a splash yesterday, acquiring holding midfielder Dax McCarty from NY Red Bulls for a good chunk of allocation money. While Fire fans are just thankful their FO didn't waste resources on Bastian Schweinsteiger and the move gives the Red Bulls flexibility, it forces fans to say goodbye to the captain of their club's most successful period.
Seattle convinced Hiroshi Kiyotake's agent that MLS is the right move, according to MLSItalia.com.
Despite indications from Seattle Sounders President of Soccer Garth Lagerwey that his club would wait for final word on Clint Dempsey's health before signing a Designated Player, that doesn't mean they've entirely stopped looking.
There's another draft today. It's the continuation of the SuperDraft, but with less Super.
Today's third and fourth rounds of the MLS SuperDraft are a bit less interesting than the early rounds. The 117 players remaining for selection with today's 44 picks aren't in Generation Adidas, nor were most on Hermann watchlists (though Sounders HGP eligible Seattle U senior Kyle Bjornethun was).
Her versatility will be needed across Seattle's changing backline.
After the NWSL Draft last week, Seattle Reign FC coach Laura Harvey signaled that the team would have international signing news within the week. That news came today, with Reign FC announcing the signing of New Zealand international Rebekah Stott, pending receipt of her P-1 Visa and International Transfer Certificate.
Former Academy player Bjornethun one of three players chosen by the team in the 3rd & 4th rounds
The 3rd and 4th rounds of the MLS SuperDraft, done over conference call rather than the live ceremony and broadcast of the first two rounds, tends to be a place for clubs to find players for the future without risking too much.
Sounders forward will go out an MLS Cup champion.
This may not have been the way Herculez Gomez saw this offseason playing out, but it does seem fitting. On the same day that the 34-year-old announced his retirement from playing, it was also announced that he would be joining ESPN as a pundit and color commentator.
Sounders midfielder dropped all sorts of gems during his Media Day press conference.
Media days can be tough, both for subjects and reporters. Usually, there's a bunch of players dragged out in front of reporters and asked an assortment of questions. Rarely does anything particularly newsworthy surface.
Former teammates Demba Ba and Eden Hazard have emerged as part of a group bringing futbol back to San Diego.
With the SuperDraft complete, the drafting portion of the offseason transitions into the draft-grading portion. In Will Parchman's grades, the Sounders 2017 class was given a decent B-.
Kendall Fletcher is departing the Seattle Reign to complete a three year Advanced Diploma in Ministry from the Hillsong International Leadership College in Sydney, Australia.
Kendall Fletcher has flipped for the Seattle Reign for the last time. The 32-year-old defender has decided to depart the Reign in order to complete a three year Advanced Diploma in Ministry from the Hillsong International Leadership College in Sydney, Australia.
Lowe had been with the Sounders since they drafted him in 2014, but never made a first team appearance.
The Seattle Sounders have officially lost the second half of their 2014 MLS SuperDraft CB haul. Jimmy Ockford has already moved to Reno and now the Sounders 8th pick in 2014, Damion Lowe, is headed to another new USL side, the Tampa Bay Rowdies.
The Sounders goalkeeper has his first action with the US cut short.
Stefan Frei has had to withdraw from his first United States National Team camp after suffering a sprained ankle, US Soccer announced today. LA Galaxy ‘keeper Brian Rowe has replaced the Swiss-born Sounder in Bruce Arena's squad.
Farfan won the 2013-14 CCL title as well as the 2016 MLS Cup.
When the Seattle Sounders signed Michael Farfan the move was about adding creativity to their midfield. Unfortunately Farfan's season was derailed with injury. The former MLS All-Star was looking to reboot his career after a nondescript journey to Liga MX (where he did win the CCL with Cruz Azul).
Not to be confused with Montreal's forward of the same name, this Oduro might be nearly as fast.
Seattle closed both rounds of the MLS draft in LA, picking 22nd in round two (44th overall) the Rave Green picked youth international Dominic Oduro. Not to be confused with Montreal's speedster of the same name, the former Manchester City Academy player has a similar type of speed about him, and could play on the right side in MLS.
The Sounders' picks were a little underwhelming, but there was method behind the seeming madness.
On the surface, the Seattle Sounders had a pretty underwhelming SuperDraft on Friday; they traded their first pick (16th) for allocation money, signed Stanford centerback Brian Nana-Sinkam with their 22nd pick, and young international midfielder/defender Dominic Oduro with pick 44.
Brian Nana-Sinkam was centerback when the Cardinal won the NCAA Champoinship.
With the final pick of the first round the Seattle Sounders selected a champion to join their squad. Brian Nana-Sinkam is a 6'0" tall, 180-pound center back that won the NCAA tournament with Jordan Morris and also played with Aaron Kovar.
NYCFC gives them general allocation money
With two picks in the first round, the Seattle Sounders had the opportunity to package and move or pick up resources via trading away. They chose to do the latter with their 16th pick in the first round, trading with New York City FC. Seattle gains 75,000 dollars in general Allocation Money in the deal, and still have the 22nd pick in the round.
Here's everything the Sounders did during the MLS SuperDraft
While the excitement behind the MLS SuperDraft as a method of club-building is waning, for some players it is their biggest shot to catch on with a club and prove they can make it in professional soccer. Most make or break it at the combine; Tesho Akindele went from relative unknown to a high pick based on his performance, landing at the sixth spot in 2014.
Networks play up their 2017 MLS coverage, top SuperDraft prospects, and Ronaldinho writes a letter to his younger self.
Major League Soccer
MLS' Will Parchman has his list of the top five draft prospects at each position, offering plenty of interesting reading even for teams picking later in the first round (like MLS Cup champions).
Sounders pick 16, 22 and 44 on Friday the 13th of January.
Draft season continues for MLS with the SuperDraft. In today's event teams will select from a list of mostly college players with a couple former pros eligible as well. Several seniors already have contracts, as do the Generation Adidas players.
Tacoma rides early offensive explosion, coasting to victory
KENT, WA - On Saturday, January 7th the Tacoma Stars defeated Atletico Baja of Tijuana, Mexico by a Score line of 6-4 at the ShoWare Center.
Electrified and inspired to begin their first match of 2017, the Stars scored just SEVEN seconds into the match thanks to the brilliant talent of Stars forward (and team leader in points) Dan Antoniuk off a quickfire assist from midfielder Raphael Cox who immediately stole the ball of the opening kick.
I'm finally watching the Star Wars films, starting with Rogue One.
Today is the day. No, not the MLS SuperDraft, (actually that is today, too,) but something more important. Well, to most people, at least. I will be going to a movie theater and watching Rogue One. As some of you may recall, last year I asked for suggestions on what movie series to watch, seeing as I've viewed almost zero relevant movies for pop culture purposes.
Seattle Reign draft players who will compete for starting spots and provide depth.
This year's NWSL Draft felt bigger than ever before, with a standing-room only crowd huddled into a large ballroom at the J.W. Marriott hotel in Los Angeles. In a year where Seattle Reign FC didn't have a huge hole to fill in any one position, the team drafted players that could provide solid depth, and a few who could compete for starting spots on the squad.
The last two years have been very good after a long list of underwhelming picks.
When the 2017 MLS SuperDraft kicks off on Friday it will mark the ninth such event in the Seattle Sounders' history. As usual, the Sounders don't start out in a particularly advantageous position. Since making the No.
