MLS Standings- Seattle hasn't slipped too far from the playoffs, so far

Seattle hiccups again but at least the rest of the West had them too.

Sounders have had more than a few hiccups this season. While the East is magnitudes worse than the West, at least Seattle is still within a stones throw (a long throw of a heavy stone) of the playoffs thanks to everyone else in the West leaving points behind.

Seattle was unable to find a creative attacking spark against a depleted Portland Thorns lineup.

On the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend, Seattle Reign FC traveled down I-5 to face a depleted Portland Thorns lineup. It was the second time the two sides were set to meet, and after an extremely physical draw in Seattle, the Reign were expected to dominate a Portland side that was missing six starters.

The nicest things that fans in New England can say about their PK goal Saturday is that "if it was a bad call (and it may well have been), it's one of two on our side of the scale (the other one interestingly also being a mis-called handball), with a cornucopia of calls on the other side of that scale.

This time the Sounders blew an early lead.

Just three weeks ago, the Seattle Sounders had what looked like a breakout win over the San Jose Earthquakes. The breaks went their way, they beat a playoff-contending Western Conference team and were back to .500. So much for that.

The Sounders lost their third straight game, this time falling 2-1 to a pretty awful New England Revolution.

There's really no way to watch the penalty that allowed the New England Revolution to equalize Saturday's game and determine the correct call was made. Sure, you could watch it and see how Fotis Bazakos might be fooled into calling a penalty, but there's no way it would stand up to replay.

Jordan Morris is on the run of his life. The Seattle Sounders rookie scored in his fourth straight match, this one a rip from nearly 30 yards out that easily beat David Bingham to the near post.

Osvaldo Alonso was credited with his first assist, but this was all Morris. The Homegrown Player -- who tied the Sounders rookie record for goals in a season and the MLS record for consecutive games with a goal by a rookie -- just wound up and smoked his shot.

Take advantage of possession

It is a Seattle strength and San Jose weakness. Most of Seattle's possession is in the central third, but recently they've been better at penetrating the final third. The 'Quakes are a team that counters well, so turnovers in the central third will be dangerous.

Sounders fans experienced ~25 minutes of a fully armed and operational 3-CM lineup in a win against Columbus, following a first half that conceded too many chances on goal. Seattle's 2016 may require a more defensive posture in the middle 3, or a transition back to the 4-4-2 of recent years.

Resurgent Alonso, improving Morris lead Sounders to win at home

A couple of things jumped out at me when re-watching the Sounders' 1-0 home win last weekend vs. Columbus Crew. First, we looked a lot better than I thought in the first half, and we looked absolutely great in the second. Watching live, it felt like we were completely throttled in the opening period, but on multiple re-views there were many good plays surrounding a few howlers that were luckily not capitalized on by the Crew.
