Chris Wondolowski has put together arguably the best season in MLS history. With his 27th goal against Portland on Saturday, Wondo tied Roy Lassiter's mark set in 1996 with the now-defunct Tampa Bay Mutiny. Throw in another seven assists, and he has been a part of 34 goals this year. An amazing season for a player that, prior to 2010, had only scored seven league goals in five years.

If you are a pessimist, when Eddie Johnson tweaked his hamstring late in the first half your heart sank. Your first thought was of the 2011 MLS Cup Playoffs without Mauro Rosales and how the Seattle Sounders struggled without him. If you are an optimist you saw the substitution as precautionary.

The data does not support either opinion.

In 2010 and 2011 the LA Galaxy were a team that dominated the Seattle Sounders. That is no longer true. This season the Sounders are 2-0-0 +6 GD against the SoCal side and due to scattered injuries and the result bearing no meaning for LA that should continue Sunday night in the 6 PM ESPN match.

The Galaxy's defensive structure is such that Eddie Johnson should have plenty of opportunities.

Last week, the Seattle Sounders secured a top 3 spot in the West and a playoff rematch with Real Salt Lake. When people hear "LA Galaxy" they think of a certain deadball specialist and the threats that David Beckham can create in open play crosses. The numbers don't back that in 2012. They are primarily a run-of-play team now and quite effective on the counter. He is also currently somewhat injured. Both Beckham and Donovan are expected to play, but basically certain to not go 90.

Making Seattle Home

On Sunday Roger Levesque hyped the team and the fans. If there was one thing that was clear in Levesque Week, it was that Seattle is home. Later that evening Sigi Schmid referred to the experience (win, tifo, crowd, etc) as "heaven." The list of soccer people that left their birthplaces and now call the greater Puget Sound home is large.

It is funny how much simply winning can change one's perspective on how a season is going. A week ago, certain factions of the Sounders fan base (namely myself) were panicking, afraid for their playoff chances. Now, after beating a floundering (intentional) rival particularly down on its luck lately, everything is coming up sunshine, lollipops and rainbows.

Top Six Players Indicate Playoff Success?

In other relatively tight cap leagues it isn't the performance of the top player in the league that determines success. Nor is it the bench or subs. Take the NBA where every team has enough space to have two great players, but need to convince their third best to take a major salary cut, or they drafted very well, or they use other cap techniques to even further weaken the bench.

Sounders salaries: Team gets plenty of 'Bang for Buck'

Once all competitions are factored in, no player in MLS is providing more for his team than Alex Caskey and no team is getting more for their money than the Seattle Sounders.

Those struggles have occurred in small stadiums and large. But this is also the only match they've ever played where if they win they capture a Cup.
