Against Marathon we all get to see the ultimate payoff of a forward who pursues the ball as if it is goal #1. The first goal by Mike Fucito was purely because of his defensive pressure. When the Sounders were at New York last year, it was Fredy Montero who pressured a defender, snagged the ball and finished cleanly.

Sep 28, 2010 - Can you believe the Seattle Sounders? In July, after the team lost 3-1 to a superior Los Angeles Galaxy side, the majority of the fanbase were convinced that there was no way that we would see rave green in the MLS playoffs. Sounder at Heart, however, was keeping hope alive, with Jeremiah Oshan's article outlining how the Kansas City Wizards, Real Salt Lake, and the Galaxy had all, at one point in their history, overcome bigger deficits to reach the playoffs.

Depth Chart Heading into Two Week Road Trip of Four Games

With the injury to James Riley, and the many other long term injuries, a team that has once been seen as deep is now stretched to fill the 18 man roster. In the next two weeks Seattle will travel thousands of miles (it will vary highly based on how many times they decide to return home). It is a two week stretch that will challenge the team to field a healthy 18, and will finally determine Seattle's ability to make it out of the Group Stage of the CONCACAF Champions League.

This is the infamous "other angle" that we heard about. Honestly, I'm not sure you can see much of anything. Also worth noting that Simon Borg says Patrick Ianni got a yellow card, which he of course did not. Anyway, this will give you an idea of what the home office is looking at.

Most of the discussion this week revolved around the differences between Tier Two and Tier Three (still) and what it means for the Sounders to be in the US Open Cup Final, does that mean that they are contending for a Cup? One voter said yes. And one voter is still hanging on to the Los Angeles Galaxy as a Cup contender.

The statement from USL says that it is merging it's second and third divisions "into a single league property for 2011" which will be called USL PRO. The announcement is exactly what many have been anticipating with the lack of D2 teams still involved with the USL.

As I researched the history of the Open Cup, I noticed that so few teams have defended their title, and in the "modern era" -- also known as the professional era -- no team has defended their crown.

The Seattle Sounders certainly love keeping their matches interesting. Two weeks ago, Fredy Montero scored in the 92nd minute to give the team a 2-1 win over the Chicago Fire. While this season's Open Cup semi-final found the Sounders cruising to victory against Chivas USA, last year's required a last-minute goal from Nate Jaqua to force extra time.

A funny thing is happening during MLS expansion. The product is not getting watered down. It is staying stable at worse, getting better at best. It isn't just the multi-ball Designated Player rule, but some of it has to be with better American collegiate players coming to the league, with players staying rather than leaving, and with better scouting of players who want to use the ladder to climb to a more profitable league.

Let's hope this was a speed bump, Sounders fall 3-1

FIFA International Dates and MLS

There have been quotes from coaches around the league that MLS should not be playing on a FIFA international date. Teams are losing quality talent to Euro 2012 qualifiers, to African Cup of Nations, to friendlies in CONCACAF and CONMEBOL, and yet with a third of the season left the MLS sides still need to gather points.

Well, first we'll need to come to the agreement that soccer is an alactic-aerobic dominant sport. Meaning that the typical movement profile within a match involves a player making, on average, a 20-meter sprint every 30-90sec over the course of a 90-minute match. Depending on the position, players will make approximately 50-80 sprints in the game, and yet cover 10-14km (check research by Thomas Reilly, Jens Bangsbo, or Raymond Verheijen for more specifics).

When Arlo White was announced as successor to Kevin Calabro as Sounders announcer in February, he was met with some mixed feelings.

On one hand, the Sounders had hired someone with soccer pedigree, having both announced and hosted a studio show for the BBC.

On the other, he was replacing a Seattle-announcing legend.

The Rave Green of Seattle couldn't have played this match any better. There was great ball movement on both wings, but the exceptional skills of Steve Zakuani really proved the difference. His ball work on the left was instrumental in creating goals. Each of the first two of the match were due to Zakuani's superb play.

Remember when Seattle wins this match the Sounders will host the US Open Cup Final at Qwest Field.

Chivas USA has some issues with the number of international players in their regular lineup, and so the USSF rule for the Open Cup about only having 5 "internationals" probably limits them from starting a truly strong squad.
