The High Line v Speedy Offenses

Sounder at Heart at related • 0 views

Graham and I have been chatting about this quite a bit lately, and thankfully it came up in the game against the Chicago Fire. You see, the high line is a way to counter a threatening target forward by using the threat of the offside trap to pull someone like a Blaise Nkufo away from the 18.

Maybe we should rewind a bit.

Projecting the protected players

Climbing the Ladder goes through all 16 current MLS teams and projects who he thinks will be protected. I think his projections on who the Sounders will protect makes a lot of sense, including the possible exposure of Kasey Keller. With his salary and age, it's hard to imagine one of those teams would take him knowing there's a good chance he'd retire if he had to play somewhere other than Seattle.

Late-ish review: Sounders fall 2-0 to Monterrey

Sounder at Heart at related • 0 views

From where I was sitting, it sure seemed like the Sounders had the better of the run of play. Of course, that doesn't really matter. Monterrey got a good break on the first goal when Kasey Keller misplayed a ball and, from what I'm reading anyway, our defense got caught in an attempt to pull an offside trap on the second goal.

Monterrey, Chivas could be significant 1-2 punch

Sounder at Heart at related • 0 views

The worst-kept secret in the Soundersphere is, without question, the mystery opponent for Friendly C. Anyone with an Internet connection has probably figured out that the Sounders will almost certainly be playing C.D. Guadalajara, otherwise known as Chivas, on Oct. 12.

This "news" has been greeted by a near audible grown on Twitter, numerous Internet message boards and even our own comments section.

Thoughts: One Win only in Next Three?

Sounder at Heart at related • 1 view

Where do you want the win?

Over Monterrey would be a huge deal. 3 points towards the Knockout Stage in the CC

Over Chicago is essentially a 6 point shift, as the Fire and Sounders are locked in a battle for one of the few remaining MLS Cup Playoff spots.

Over Chivas USA means advancement to the US Open Cup Final for the second straight year.

So I started this whole PPM-based standings spreadsheet back in mid-July, largely for my own elucidation and amusement. At the time, our Sounders stood at 16 points, just 3 points back of 8th place in the overall table, but I couldn't help but notice that we were 13th in PPM at a paltry 1/match, and it seemed like this was far more important to consider than the absolute point total, with such an inequity of matches played.

With the Sounders off this week, this was a potentially frightening weekend for the Rave Green's MLS playoff hopes. Luckily, most of the breaks went our boys' way.

Weakest Role on the Pitch for Sounders

Sounder at Heart at related • 3 views

Lately the Sounders have been using a kind of 4-2-3-1. It is similar to the Arrow that we used to note around here, and has primarily been the way that the Sounders have dealt with the loss of Brad Evans to injury. Nathan Sturgis doesn't play forward as much as Evans, but he also doesn't get back as much as Alonso.

Feel free to ignore anything that compares MLS to NASL

Sounder at Heart at related • 7 views

Just saw this story over at SI.com. Don't feel compelled to read it as it basically paints a false picture of the current state of affairs. In a nutshell, it claims MLS is coming dangerously close to following in NASL's footsteps in four key areas:

  • Gap between haves and have-nots
  • Rapid expansion
  • Small-market overspending
  • League failing to develop American players

Without wasting too much time and energy debunking this nonsense, I'll attempt to deal with it quickly.

SBN Power Rankings - The Red Bull Debate

Sounder at Heart at related • 0 views

There is a debate amongst the SBN MLS bloggers that concerns two things;

1- Are they snapshots of the current time, or attempts to predict the end of the season?

2- Is Red Bull actually any good?

My answers are for a prediction, and NO.

With New York Red Bull having a very tough schedule, their poor performance since adding their two new DPs and a historically shaky keeper I voted them in the 3rd tier with the Chicago Fire and Toronto FC.

While trying my best to avoid overdoing notions of romance, it's developments like these that reinforce my belief that the league is entering a new era. Arabe may not be a familiar name, but they've been the class of Panamanian soccer for over a year now. All four of these clubs will be able to tell themselves that getting to the knockout round is a reasonable goal.

Strength of Schedule in Sounders Favor

Sounder at Heart at related • 0 views

Let's stick to Sagarin for this, although I expect we'll see something from sidereal later that says similar. It is odd, but the strength of schedule metric that Sagarin uses (and I'm not doubting his math) has Seattle with the 11th toughest to this point in the season.

It strikes me as odd because the Sounders have played more games (6) against top 4 teams than anyone but the Houston Dynamo.

They earned that draw. Certainly the Sounders threatened on occasion but these were matched on the other hand.

As we all know, tifo and other sports-related signage is just the modern incarnation of heraldry. When ancient warriors took the battlefield, their heralds would fly their colors and symbols in order to identify themselves and intimidate the enemy. Dynamo Theory Joins SBNation as Our Soccer Slate Continues to Grow

You know his work from around the 'net as "Ginge" as the red-head that often takes a snarky look at the world of MLS, the US MNT and general soccer thoughts.

But the team in MLS that he loves, the Houston Dynamo, needed a great blog about them.

What does a club do when it grows from being a nothing into winning a major trophy?

It wants more.

It embraces its lack of history, and so do its fans.

Keys to the game: Sounders vs. Dynamo

Depending on Chicago's result against New York, the Sounders will be start play tonight sitting in either ninth or 10th in PPM and eight in overall points. Assuming FC Dallas holds onto what is currently a 3-1 lead over 10-man Philadelphia, the Sounders will have a chance to move up to fifth in overall points with a victory (eighth in PPM).

Houston has been one of the class teams of the last five years, despite losing so much talent during that time. What was the breaking point that caused 2010 to be what its been?

Don Garber's Strange Comments on MLS Conference Realignment

EDITOR'S NOTE: I'd been thinking about writing about this very topic and Sidereal basically sums it up well.

We didn't really pick up on this topic, as the Sounders faithful were paying closer attention to the game in El Salvador than to the All Star game festivities in Houston, but at a press conference during the break, this exchange occured:

Brad Evans hasn't been responding well in his knee recovery, might miss the rest of the season Sounders FC coach Sigi Schmid said

Joshua Mayers on Twitter

Currently the Injured List is full at four

Hurtado (final month of season return at best)
Estrada (minor injury, but out a few more games)
Vagenas (minor injury, out nearly a month more)
Fucito (eligible to be back any moment, likely back to full practice this weekend)

Sounders currently have a roster slot open.

I love when practice is at Qwest Field and my work day allows me to take the little four block trip there. It gives me the opportunity to show my face at practice (Jeremiah goes at least once a week) and remind the team (and media) that Sounder at Heart is as much about original interviews as we are about analysis.

My prognostications weren't 100 percent accurate, but I was right that the Sounders would play Saprissa in Round 3 (not hard to figure out, but it's something...). As it turns out, we'll hit the road for that match on Sept. 14, which actually is reasonably convenient.

The Sounders will host Real Salt Lake Sept.

In just his second match as a Sounder, Alvaro Fernandez made sure his place in our lore was secure. Fernandez's header in the 73rd minute tied the score in the road half of Seattle's two-leg CCL preliminary stage series with Metapan, and gave the Sounders a 2-1 aggregate score victory.

The goal assured the Sounders of no fewer than six more CCL matches, including two home matches against Costa Rican powerhouse Saprissa and Mexican side Monterrey.

We finally have (very low quality) video of Freddie Ljungberg on King5 last night. He keeps it pretty classy, but does say that it was not his choice to stop training and playing with the team. I understand that there is a vocal, potential minority who would prefer to get the competitions over the friendlies. That said, we certainly will consider it. It's something we are talking about internally.

Adrian Hanauer throws a little cold water on the #trophiesnotfriendlies movement during his interview with Joshua Mayers of the Seattle Times, but he does acknowledge an awareness of it.

Phase 1: Preliminary Round and Phase 3: Elimination Round
• Greater aggregate number of away goals scored in regulation time in the two matches (excluding any goals scored in overtime)
• Greater number of goals scored in the overtime periods at the end of the second match
• Kicks from the Penalty Spot procedure (as per FIFA Laws of the Game)

This is pulled directly from the competition rules on the CCL homepage.

Sounder at Heart Roundtable: The Freddie Ljungberg saga

With Freddie Ljungberg's trade to the Chicago Fire last week a captivating saga finally closed. The last time he appeared in front of Sounders fans was during the U.S. Open Cup match against the Los Angeles Galaxy on July 7.

In that match, it is worth noting, Ljungberg showed up late and took his seat on the bench sometime during the first half.

At the risk of turning Sounder at Heart into nerd central by adding onto malcontenjake's and his own contributions, Jeremiah invited me to add some detail to the simulated MLS season results I dropped into a comment.

At its core, the idea is to predict the final standings by pseudo-randomly simulating out the remaining games in the season.

There's been a lot of talk around these parts regarding what makes a legitimate projection. Should we take into account more than simple PPM to predict where our boys will finish? Should we include goal-differential into projections? Should we dig even deeper?

At some point, we're planning to unveil a rejiggered pythagorean projection that we think answers these things in a statistically relevant way.

Every week the soccer bloggers on SBNation rate the teams. We don't do them by a pure ranking from 1-16, but instead by groupings based on how we expect the teams to finish at the end of the year.

Tier One is for teams that we think will be competing for one of the two MLS major trophies (MLS Cup and Supporters Sheild).
