Quick Review: Sounders fall to Rapids

Sounder at Heart at related • 0 views

Some on the network think that Sounders fans blame the referees too much. While they may be true, we have another match where a goal was scored off a bad call, and a PK was not awarded in a hand ball in the box that gained clear advantage. The fact is that while the Sounders are having troubles scoring even the league itself has admitted that it took goals off the board in Sounders matches.

In a match-up of two under-performing sides this Saturday evening which side will start their claim to legit run, or will both just settle in mediocrity until the Summer Window closes? The Colorado Rapids have had a great homefield advantage through their history, all due to their playing at higher elevation and not due to having a great atmosphere.

USA host Turkey and MLS Week 10 Open Thread

Its hard to say its a big match, but the USA is down to 23 players on its National Team roster and they face a team with a damn good decade, who like the USA just hasn't taken that next step. Turkey had 15 points in World Qualifying, which though respectable was not what they expected after making the semi-finals in 2002, the semifinals in the Euros of 2008 and the semi-finals of the 2003 Confederations Cup.

Klieg Light: Montano encapsulates the youth attack

Sounder at Heart at related • 0 views

There's a saying in baseball - You can't hit a five run home run. When teams struggle they sometimes try to force things, in Miguel Montano we saw against the Earthquakes the type of energy and drive that had many commenters here claiming he "wanted" a win more than other players. While that may be true, he also seemed to push himself and rush a little bit.

Reep was largely protesting against what he saw as pointless sideways passing, and to an extent he had a point. Mourinho has introduced English football to the notion of "resting with the ball", and ball retention in itself can be a way of wearing down an opponent, even if there is not a lead to be protected, but there is a danger that possession becomes an end in itself, rather than a means to opening space or running down the clock.

The Seattle Sounders put on a great show. As an organization they do so much in the community. The pre-game, in-game and post-game presentation is excellent. Its match one in the Heritage Cup, and match 10 in League play. Currently the Sounders are exactly average on record, and if the referees haven't blown three calls (two that they admitted) they would be even on Goal Differential. They'd also have another win.

While the team has underperformed, their record looks even worse than their underperformance indicates.

As you may or may not know, I'm a Bay Area native. So, I have an inherent interest in this fledgling rivalry with the Earthquakes.

I happened to be at last year's game at San Jose, and it was pretty obvious that the Quakes organization took the Heritage Cup at least somewhat seriously. Dempsey's family was certainly not wealthy. But neither do they seem desperately poor, nor far outside the American mainstream. His Dad, we learn in the video segment, worked for a railroad and in construction, his Mom was a nurse, his sister was a high-level tennis player, and Clint eventually hooked up with the Dallas Texans elite youth club before spending three years at Furman University (an excellent private liberal-arts school in South Carolina).

Quick Review: Sounders beat Red Bulls 1-0

Call it the redemption of Fred Montero, or call it the redemption of Brad Evans. Either way, this was as big of a win as a team can get in the ninth match of the season.

The Sounders went to Red Bull Arena and pretty much dominated play, at least from my standpoint in a crowded bar.

Seattle had the shots advantage (15-8), the shots-on-goal advantage (4-1), and the corner kicks advantage (6-3).

Sure the game will be in a beautiful stadium, but it is unlikely to be a beautiful game. The Sounders have another starter injured (Alonso) and are also going to bench an off-form player or two, or maybe even three. As discussed earlier this week Red Bull is not playing as a cohesive unit.

While the Sounders surprised many by starting off worse than expected the Red Bull side with high churn, new Euro coach and the pressures of filling a new stadium have surprised by winning as much as they have so far.

This is not hyperbole. If Gene Rodenberry were to have a background image of a sports stadium it would generate its own power; it would be wrapped in a mediatronic skin; it would be climate controlled; it would be directly connected to mass transit. It would not just be a palace for the game, it would be a palace for the hosting city/nation.

Saturday night, if you watched at home or listened on the radio you heard many mentions of the new 4-3-3 that Sigi rolled out in order to get a bit more offense, and to try and get better passing from the Seattle side.

Don't believe them.

Due to the different amount of games played the only way to compare teams is based on points per match (or you could do percentage of points won).

Almost 12 hours removed from a game I called the most frustrating result of the season, and after watching the match's highlights, I think it's a little easier to feel OK about dominating the defending Supporter's Shield winners and having to settle for a tie. Not happy, not satisfied, but OK. (As a side note, I'd also like to say that I'm less incensed about the call at the end of the game.

In a season of frustrating results, this was worst

The tie at Dallas FC seemed wrong, but really only because of one play. The tie at Real Salt Lake was frustrating for the same reason. You might even say there were frustrating aspects about the loss at Toronto.

Today's tie was easily the worst, though.

It was 45 minutes of excruciating anticipation for a tie that just felt destined to come.

I still haven't seen a lineup, but apparently Miguel Montano is dressing.

In the meantime, here's a link to an interesting video about our-soon-to-be-own Blaise N'Kufo. I think it's in Dutch, but he does the interview in English.
