Hello, Sounderatheart community. Since I have been recently added as an "official" author at this site, I should probably introduce myself. My name is Jake and I am a Sounders Supporter. But more than that, I am a student of the game, and this is a result of what I realized a few years ago was my tactical and technical naivete of soccer.

USA Draws Tough Group In 2011 Womens World Cup

Despite being the last team to qualify, the US was still seeded well. It didn't matter, as they drew the 4th and 6th ranked teams in the world into their group (Sweden and North Korea, respectively), along with Colombia (32nd). Host nation Germany gets a relatively easy group and should coast to the bracket.

Ljungberg Overvalues Self, hurts Seattle's draft compensation

Ljungberg thinks he's worth 3M$ per year and is exploring options in Europe to make that happen. There's no way the Fire give him a significant raise.

It is believed Seattle would get a first round pick if Chicago retains him. Only a second round pick if he leaves.

The shortest off-season in American sports has barely started. Already two of the five drafts are out of the way - Expansion and Waiver. While Seattle didn't lose anyone in the Waiver Draft, in fact no waived players were picked up by other teams, the two weeks leading up to the Re-Entry Draft Stage 2 should lead the Seattle Sounders into cap freedom.

Whitecaps, Timbers Following Sounders' Model

While the Sounders used their expansion draft a little differently than either of MLS's newest teams, the end result appears to be the model the Timbers and Whitecaps are going after. Namely, the intend to lean heavily on players who weren't in MLS last season.

Lower Division News over the Long Weekend

First USLPro gets a team on the West Coast, down in LA. An odd move, as the closest team is Orlando, FL. Hard to have the regional organization that would lower travel costs. As things stand right now, the division 3 in USSF has a North East, South East and Caribbean with a team in LA.

Current expected structure with announced and expected teams for 2011 in USLPro (USSF D3)
Caribbean - Antigua, River Plate, Sevilla, Indios, PR United
North East - Dayton, Harrisburg, New York, Pittsburgh, Rochester
South East - Charleston, Charlotte, Orlando, Richmond, Williamington
West - LA (Fullerton)

Vancouver and Montreal are still trying to remain in NASL, while in MLS as well.

Inspired by David Falk's post on the offensive woes of the team (which seems to be an annual thing - for team, he, me) I did some back of napkin numbers and found that the Sounders pre-break averaged a goal a game in those 15 matches, for a pace of 30 goals.

After the break the team averaged 1.

Expansion Draft Losses Effect On Depth Chart

As Portland and Vancouver used the Draft to build their rosters, or just to trade for talent as the Dax for Rodney Wallace and 4th Rd pick just did, Seattle has lost three players in the past 24 hours, while adding two. The depth chart is in flux, as Seattle will be adding and losing players in the upcoming Re-Entry Drafts, but this does let us know a bit on how losing both Nathan Sturgis and Sanna Nyassi to Vancouver will effect the off-season player hunt.

The Trade - Peter Vagenas for Julien Baudet and Danny Earls

MLS had a ton of activity on Protected List Day this year. Several trades went down and the Sounders were in on one of them (Initial News, Press Release, UZ over at BW, UZ here). In the short term it seems this deal was done by Colorado so that they could protect an additional domestic player, but it should be noted that it was also likely a salary dump.

Complete List of Available Players

If you feel like having a full list of available players, here it is. Among the more notable names left off are seven DPs — Blaise Nkufo, Freddie Ljungberg, Nery Castillo, Juan Pablo Angel, Julian de Guzman, Mista and Geovani — Guillermo Barros Schelotto and Jeff Cunningham.

The List

Sounder at Heart at related • 0 views

As reported by Josh Mayers (which is legit enough for me):

  • Osvaldo Alonso
  • Brad Evans
  • Alvaro Fernandez
  • Mike Fucito
  • Jhon Kennedy Hurtado
  • Nate Jaqua
  • Kasey Keller
  • Fredy Montero
  • Jeff Parke
  • James Riley
  • Steve Zakuani

This only differs from the final protectinator standings in that Riley is on for Leo, Jaqua is in for Nkufo, and Evans is in for Ianni.

Zonal Marking does MLS Cup Final!

"It was a good clash between two sides similar in ability but differing in strategy; Dallas played direct football with width, Colorado played narrower and passed the ball more in midfield. MLS let its writers know before the official announcement at half time, but twitter is alive with some of the details.

There will be a balanced schedule in 2011. It was the only logical choice.

There will be 10 teams in Playoffs, with a Wild Card Round added. No idea if it is 5 from each Conference, which will be maintained, or if it is 4 & 4 with 2 Wild Cards.

Schelotto not returning to Columbus?

Via Ives, it sounds like Columbus wants to get younger by jettisoning Schelotto. Here's some things we know about the Sounders:

- Sigi likes to sign guys he's coached before.
- The team is young and inexperienced and could use a veteran.
- As per our tactics thread yesterday, the team lacks an advanced midfield playmaker, and Schelotto has been one of the best in the league at that position

Does that add up to Schelotto in Rave Green?
