When Sven Goran Eriksson was in charge of the England national team there were always questions
about his commitment in the minds of many English fans. A foreign manager for the national side
never quite seemed to sit right but when Steve McLaren spectacularly messed things up we were all
pretty pleased with the appointment of Fabio Capello.
Former Leeds United Striker Healy serves as a rare exception since he has become quite the
unique phenomenon with Northern Ireland yet continues to underachieve on the club level. He even
broke the record for goals scored in a qualifying campaign for a European Championship after
scoring 13 goals in 11 appearances for his national team.
The home continent of the 2010 World Cup is close to having its 5 qualifying sides defined for The
Great Tournament. The 1st team to officially qualify is Ghana. The Black Stars defeated Sudan 2-0
at home to secure top spot in Group D. Goals by Inter midfielder Sulley Muntari & Chelsea
midfielder Michael Essien sealed the victory.
Rounds 7 and 8 of CONCACAF World Cup qualifiers were the rounds that re-established the known
order of CONCACAF national teams. The US & Mexico came into these rounds in need of 6 points to
overtake Honduras & Costa Rica in the standings. The Stars & Stripes defeated El Salvador 2-1 at
home in Utah with Jozy Altidore scoring the game winner in 1st half injury time.
Europeam heavyweights and 1998 World Cup champions France have a battle on their hands if they
want to qualify for the tournament in South Africa next summer. They drew with Group Seven
leaders Serbia on Wednesday night leaving them four points off the Serbians with just two games
left. It now seems almost certain they will have to face a play-off tie to qualify for the
tournament but Barcelona striker thierry Henry is confident his national side have what it takes to
get them to South Africa in 2010.
The first World Cup in Africa starts in only 9 months! We should have some fun with this
tournament given the international affiliations of the group.
Most countries have only 2 or 3 matches left to qualify; some have already finished
The 28th through 32nd teams will make it to South Africa on November 18, when the fifth place
South America team (currently Colombia) hosts the fourth place Concacaf team (currently Costa Rica)
in the return leg (first leg Nov 14) and the 8 best UEFA [Europe] 2nd place teams play their second
Tomorrow night England can put the heartache of missing out on a place in the European
Championships behind them by qualifying for the World Cup next summer. They take on Croatia, at
Wembley, knowing a win would guarantee them a place in South Africa and to add some extra spice to
an already hot encounter – the English also have a cause for revenge.
It is quite difficult to compare the career path of Fabio Capello and Marcello Lippi. Both have
been successful coaches and both hail from the Italian peninsula. They both coached Juventus of
Turin during their glittering managerial career, yet the similarities end there.
While Capello's playing career far surpasses that of Lippi's, the gap in accolades between the
two greatly diminishes once we begin to analyze their coaching resumes.
