Florentino Perez has made another desperate attempt to save face and screwing up their deal to sign David de Gea. They failed to put in a bid all summer, despite having months to agree the deal, then time ran out for them on the final day when they made their move.

Following the failed transfer on deadline day we could have said that we were no longer interested in the deal because time was short to do it but we had an obligation (with De Gea) to try it – although we knew it was very difficult.

Sir Alex Ferguson has reflected on the journey Wayne Rooney went on to get him from Everton to Manchester United.

Jim Ryan came back from one of our academy games at the 14 years level and he said 'I've seen a player' and he said the boy is Wayne Rooney and we tried to get him because there's a window at the end of the season it's a one-week window where we can entice or approach a boy from another club to come join your academy, but it failed.

It's been a pretty solid start to the 2015/16 Premier League season for Louis Van Gaal's boys. Fifth place, with the defence in particular brushing up well (if you discount the Gomis/Ayew combo last weekend); but there has been some criticism in terms of goals scored.

Wayne Rooney looks a little lost, Memphis Depay looks a little sluggish, and Juan Mata has been scampering tirelessly with little luck.

As he walked off the field, he angrily started wagging his finger at Sir Alex Ferguson, as if it was the manager's fault he went in with his studs on Jonny Evans.
