Altidore and Real Madrid a Bad Marriage

Major League Soccer Talk at related • 14 views

Rumors have been hot and heavy the past few days that Jozy Altiodre, the first American teen strike rto ever elicit serious interest from top European clubs is being heavily scouted by Real Madrid. Altidore, whose development has been remarkable to this point in his career could throw it all away by going to a club where his development will be stifled and where his national team service could become less frequent (as it did with Tim Howard once he went to Manchester United).

MLS Could Lead US Down Path Traveled by England

English Football suffered an embarrassing home defeat to a good Croatia side Wednesday night. While I believe Croatia is as good if not better than England at the moment, losing to the Croats at Wembley when they have already qualified for the Euro 2008 finals and the Three Lions had everything to play for is unacceptable from the perspective of those of us who believe International Football and the growth of the game here in the US need a strong England side fighting for trophies and honors.

OPINION: Time to Reign In MLS' Foreign Player Addiction

This morning in the Washington Post, Steven Goff wrote a column indicating the MLS is strongly considering doing away with age restrictions for international players and will then allow seven full internationals per 18 man (perhaps a bump up to 20 man) senior squad. I can think of no possible policy change that would be more destructive for both MLS and US Soccer than adopting this potential rule.

Play It Again Dwayne

Major League Soccer is now entering its adolescence after a somewhat turbulent infancy. As the league develops some history one thing has become perfectly clear: Dwayne DeRossario is the best big game player in the history of MLS. Believe it or not, DeRossario is not among the all time league leaders in Assists or Goals. Yet whenever a game is on the line it seems to be DeRo who comes through.

Nicol's Defense Steals the Show

Taylor Twelllman and Steve Ralston seem to have gotten most of the ink this season for the Revolution, and why not? Ralston broke the all time MLS assists record set by his mentor Carlos "El Pibe" Valderrama earlier this season and Twellman as he did again last night has been breaking opponents hearts with improbable goals.

But last night's 1-0 Revolution victory over the Chicago Fire, a win that sent New England to its 4th MLS Cup title in 6 seasons has to be credited to a stout defense.

Ruud Gullit: MLS on the Map

Major League Soccer Talk at related • 4 views

Well Alexi Lalas said he wanted a sexy name and if published reports are to be believed he got one. Ruud Gullit may not be the right manager for the Galaxy but he certainly has a name in the world of international football, which will create yet another publicity splash for a club so lacking in on field performance but with a Hollywood air to it.

Coaching Rumors Range from Bizzare to Unrealistic

Major League Soccer Talk at related • 1 view
Steven Cohen of World Soccer Daily seems convinced that Steve McClaren is going to be next manager of the Los Angeles Galaxy. Why would McClaren who has the England job, albeit tenuously and managed Middlesbrough be interested in a second tier Major League Soccer job, a job that was ditched by Frank Yallop in order to take over an expansion team? I can point blank without any sources on the matter dismiss the talk of McClaren, Fabio Capello or any of the other sexy international names associated with the Galaxy job.

Arena's Demise Long in the Making

Major League Soccer Talk at related • 9 views

Bruce Arena is the only American born coach to reach legendary status. In spite of his many detractors, he is by far the most accomplished manager our nation has ever produced. However since 2003 when the US flamed out of the Confederations Cup with a last place group finish, Bruce Arena has lost his way, his edge so to speak.

The same troubles that ailed Arena's last few years as US National Team manager ailed his short tenure with the Red Bulls.

Defensive Posture Hurting MLS

Must see TV has turned into a bore fest courtesy of Major League Soccer. The last several weeks of the regular season were high flying as many of the teams were going for broke thanks to MLS' playoff system which unlike European Football gives teams the opportunity to save their season even after months of subpar play.

However this excitement has turned into dull, lifeless football in the playoffs.

Yallop Returning to San Jose

Frank Yallop's short troubled stint as manager of the Los Angeles Galaxy has ended according to SI.com. The website is reporting that Yallop agreed to return to the site of his greatest years as a manager in the Bay Area with the newly reformed Earthquakes franchise. This will end speculation that Dominic Kinnear, a longtime Bay Area resident and Yallop's successor as the manger of the Quakes, now the Houston Dynamo will leave the franchise this year.

Revs, Wizards Advance

Major League Soccer Talk at related • 0 views

In two uninspiring displays of soccer the New England Revolution and Kansas City Wizards both advanced to the conference finals. New England will host the Chicago Fire Thursday Night on ESPN2, while Houston will host Kansas City Saturday on FSC. Both games will be winner take all with a 120 minutes plus PKs to decide the MLS Cup participants if necessary

Dynamo Advances

FC Dallas continued its history of stumbling through the MLS postseason, blowing a second half two goal aggregate lead in a 4-2 ET aggregate loss to the defending champion Houston Dynamo. This intra-state rivalry continues to get chippier and chippier with each passing fixture as today's outing resembled a rugby match, with Arturo Alvarez being sent off for kicking Brad Davis, and several other yellow cards being issued for violent conduct.

DC United the Victim of MLS Salary Cap

Major League Soccer Talk at related • 6 views

While the salary cap for American sports leagues such as the NBA and NFL have been smashing successes testing the skill of most clubs front office, the same policy which so many in England want placed on Premier League clubs would lead to nothing short of a major competitive advantage for smaller clubs. Let me state that I have always supported salary caps in American sports leagues, because unlike international football they do not have a system of transfers and unlike international football they do not have a varying number of fixtures based on the number of competitions a club either enters or qualifies for.

Fire Advances

In a show of absolute tactical savvy, Juan Carlos Osorio the Chicago Manager outfoxed Tom Soehn and DC United despite United having an active home crowd and a superior club. It must be pointed out that Soehn made two huge mistakes in the past few weeks that created the environment for Chicago's success.

1- Playing Jaime Moreno and Luciano Emilio in the final meaningless game against Columbus.
