As normal for the Carling Cup it will be all change for United, Tomasz Kuszczak or Ben Amos will start in goal.

On a something of a slow news day, we can safely say it has been a fantastic weekend for Manchester United. Not only did Dimitar Berbatov score five against Blackburn Rovers yesterday, taking them clear at the top of the Premier League. Chelsea fumbled in their match at Newcastle, only managing a 1-1 draw which means United are clear at the top of the league for the first time this season.

Many said it had been coming with an unbeaten run that stretched into last season it was only a matter of time before someone was on the end of a severe thumping.

Today it came, Manchester United put seven past a woeful Blackburn Rovers side at Old Trafford who did manage a late consolation through Christopher Samba, but the man of the moment was undoubtedly Dimitar Berbatov, who walked off with the match ball and five goals to his name.

Rangers 0-1 Manchester United: Roo To Be Thankful For?

In the spirit of the great American holiday known as Thanksgiving, here are five things I'm thankful for from our win over Rangers:

1) Rangers' lack of serious bite.

The home side did have some chances, but in part to injury issues that rival ours, didn't test our back line as I expected they would, especially in the second half.

Manchester United's Champions League campaign started with a dud against Rangers, but tonight, United could seal a place in the round of 16 at Rangers' expense as the two tangle at Ibrox Stadium.

Rangers' held United to a 0-0 draw at Old Trafford in September, but since then, United have reeled off three wins in a row to move into pole position Group C, scoring a 1-0 win over Valencia at the Mestalla and wins of 1-0 and 3-0 over Turkish champions Bursaspor.

Bebe Scores A Wonder Strike For The Reserves Against Wigan

The last couple of weeks the fortunes of Manchester United's reserve and academy sides have been very different. While the reserves have recently recorded wins over Wigan and Bolton, the academy has struggled, being thrashed by Wolves 4-0. But things look to be back on the up after wins in their latest fixtures.

Manchester United 2-0 Wigan Athletic: Evra And Hernandez Take United Joint Top

The score line may suggest a relatively easy day at the office but it was far from it.

Manchester United did beat Wigan by two goals at Old Trafford but in reality had to thank the referee for sending off two Wigan players, which gave United the upper hand in the closing stages.

With Wigan seemingly unable to beat Manchester United in the recent past and being the lowest scorers in the Premier League, most thought this would be a good opportunity to increase out goal difference and close in on those above.

Following the midweek international break Manchester United are back in action against a lowly Wigan Athletic side who make the short trip to Old Trafford, with Latics boss Roberto Martinez hoping to spring a shock on Saturday after a poor United performance against Aston Villa last weekend.

They will have a mountain to climb though as United have won all 11 of their previous games against Wigan ten Premier League matches and the 2006 League Cup final.

We've still got almost a month and a half before the January transfer period opens, but it appears that United are already wrapping up a little winter business well before the window opens.

Will Rooney’s Return Bring Good Returns?

A few weeks ago, it looked like Wayne Rooney might be out until December, just in time for the key matches against Arsenal and Chelsea.

However, according to Monday's reports, Rooney could have a few matches under his belt by the time we face our title rivals, as his return from an ankle injury could happen this weekend when we host Wigan.

Match Review: Aston Villa 2-2 Manchester United

So apparently that big card that Fergie has up his sleeve is a ‘Get Out of Jail Free' card., eh?

It would seem that way, after we yet again found ourselves in a precarious position with time not on our side, we yet again maneuvered our way out of potential disaster.

Early on, it was our uncanny ability to wriggle ourselves into sticky situations that caused us to drop points from winning positions.

A last gasp win over Wolves and a dour draw against Manchester City. It seems Manchester United are not quite hitting top gear, but the only undefeated team in the country will be looking for a performance against Aston Villa at Villa Park that is as impressive as the statistics surrounding the match.

The Power Remains With United

Tensions were high before the game and the anticipation epic, but what transpired at Eastlands was a dour affair with barely any excitement or any decent strikes on goal.

United though did have the better of the game and managed a measly seven attempts at goal all night, with four of them on target.

Still unbeaten in the Premier League and three points ahead of their city rivals, Manchester United take a trip to Eastlands to play Manchester City in what will be a crunch match for both teams, and arguably the biggest derby in recent memory given City's upturn in fortunes.

Much has been said over the last few days from both camps in the lead up to tonight's game, but talking is one thing, doing the business on the pitch in something entirely different.

Will Owen Hargreaves Bounce Back From His Latest Injury Setback?

Red Rants at related • 0 views

I'm almost 100% certain that somewhere there's a scorned woman or a bitter Bayern Munich fan who has a voodoo doll with a tiny Owen Hargreaves shirt on and a fistful of pins through it.

If not, then Hargo is about the unluckiest son of a gun that I've seen step foot on a football pitch. That is, unless you count that poor Moroccan keeper, whose misfortune is as laughable as Hargo's is sad.

Daily News Round-Up: Buffon To United… Not A Chance

The Monday papers have been a little short on Manchester United news but there are a few little stories that have some relevance to the club.

Manchester United 2-1 Wolverhampton Wanderers: Park Provides Inspiration To A Poor United Side

Red Rants at related • 0 views

Ji-Sung Park continued his rich reign of scoring form against Wolves on Saturday but this time he left it late, very late in fact. Manchester United had to wait until the 93rd minute for Park's winner against Wolverhampton Wanderers at Old Trafford.

The most surprising fact about this game was the inclusion of Owen Hargreaves, back in the starting line up after over two years out.

Manchester United face Wolverhampton Wanderers at Old Trafford for the second time in recent weeks and after the victory in the Carling Cup it would seem a victory should be on the cards as a more experienced United side will line up against Wolves.

What Does The Future Hold For Manchester United?

Red Rants at related • 0 views

A lot of focus over past weeks has been on the transfer policy at Manchester United and whether or not they will spend millions to improve a squad that some say – Wayne Rooney – is not good enough to compete for major honours.

Sir Alex Ferguson though is confident in the young players coming through and those he has invested in.

Thursday’s News Round-Up

After a few weeks of turmoil it seems that Old Trafford is in a relative state of calm, if it can ever be in such s state. Over the last week we have seen a controversial goal, a new hero emerge and the exponential rise of a former homeless footballer. How time flies.

In what is a rather slow news day, Nani has hit the headlines once more but this time his comments are far less controversial than his goal against Tottenham.

Match Review: Bursaspor 0-3 Manchester United

Fergie always says that ten points in the Champions League group stage is the veritable magic number for advancement to the next round, and with two games to spare, United have reached that target after running riot in the second half in Turkey.

In the process, we moved within touching distance of yet another berth in the knockout stages, but after seeing Nani exit with a knee injury in the first half, we can only hope that there's not another addition to the season's list of injury casualties.

We are nearing the business end of the Champions League and the fourth round of the group stage upon us with Manchester United facing a tricky trip to Turkey to face Turkish champions and current league leaders Bursaspor.

Currently in Group C the Turks have zero points, have conceded six goals and scored none, the only side in the Champions League not to have found the back of the net.

October Review: Going Up, Please

After rollercoastering through the first month and a half of the season, it was no surprise that October had its share of bumps.

However, despite ending the month farther behind Chelsea than we were entering it, there's actually good reason to feel markedly more upbeat than we might have been about a month ago, even with our star presently sidelined for perhaps at least another few weeks.
