Exclusive: The sorry life of a former United player

Red Rants at related • 5 views

Welcome. Today we tell you the story of a player who not too long ago wore the famous red shirt of our club. We must warn you that the story is grim, in a Dickensian sort of way; for a start the protagonist is allegedly a dick who alleges that others may also be dicks hence the Dickensian theme.

United to overpay for Valencia this week?

Red Rants at related • 4 views

The Mirror carries the story today according to which, Antonio Valencia flew in last night for a medical to sign for United. It's only the Mirror that's running the story, sans quotes, but considering the Ronaldo transfer was confirmed at the end of last week, it was only a matter of time this happened.

Interview with Aon - Manchester United’s future sponsors

Chris Toy (Studs Up) recently interviewed David Prosperi, Vice President (Global Public Relations) at Aon. It's an interesting read and it's nice to see how Manchester United is viewed from outside football i.e. once you take away football partisanship.

For those of us who have supported the club from before 99 or even before the Premier League started (I got in at '94), it's quite amazing to see United completely dominate English football for the best part of two decades and as a result become the most popular and most valuable sports team in the world.

Pre-Order the new Manchester United home kit

Manchester United's 09-10 home kit (the last one to bear the AIG logo) is now available for pre-order.

From initial images it seems to be a plain red top with the white shorts bearing a red stripe down the sides. The white V-neck collar that some leaked images showed earlier this summer is missing, but there does seem to be a 'V' across the shirt, either in a darker shade of red or in white (with the color blacked out for the promotional images).

Benzema, Benzema and more Benzema. But it’s only talk.

This will be a short one, and I can't help but point out the overwhelming twisting of quotes to fit headlines.

First of all there is a quote from Bernard Lacombe, the advisor to Lyon's president, who talked about clubs being flush with cash. And that it would be difficult to resist a big bid if it came: "If United want to buy Karim then what can you do?

Ronaldo is really two humans in one body

"Manchester United is my home. Even when I say my heart is here people still make things up. But this is where I want to play." - May 24, 2009

Question asked yesterday: "When did you know you would be going to Real Madrid?"

"After we won the European Cup I thought there is no more I can achieve here.

Breaking down the United-Tevez-Kia tug of war

So it has come to pass. Manchester United have announced that Carlos Tevez has decided to reject United's offer to make his loan move permanent. Here's the statement:

Following contact received from Carlos Tevez's advisors last night, in advance of the deadline the Club set for concluding negotiations, Manchester United announces that Carlos will not be signing a new contract with the Club.

Benzema ‘Prefers’ Madrid but United better sporting brand than Madrid

Jean Michael Aulas, Lyon's chairman, who's allegedly charismatic according to reports has revealed that whilst Karim Benzema will most likely stay with Lyon for another year, if he decides to depart, it would be for Madrid.

Don't trust me? Well, here's the quote:

"No-one is intransferable, but knowing Karim, if he did leave, it would be to Real Madrid.

The 2009/2010 Barclays Premier League fixtures were announced at 10am today, with Manchester United playing their first game against newly promoted Birmingham at Old Trafford.

An away trip to Burnley follows before an expected cracker of a game at Old Trafford on 29 August against Arsenal, followed by the international break and then a trip to White Hart Lane to play Tottenham Hotspurs.

Is United being pound foolish with the below-26 policy?

Red Rants at related • 4 views

Reports filtered in yesterday, starting with the Guardian and the Independent that United have made it a long-term transfer policy of buying players only under 26 years of age.

The reports go on to claim that Berbatov's purchase was regarded as an exception to this rule. The main thinking behind this is that the resale value of a player would go down significantly if a player over 26 signed on for the club.

Et tu, Rio?

I don't like to deal with the usual tabloid guff. But this is outrageous. And unavoidable! (via Daily Mail)

Ronaldo transfer money harder to spend in reality

Red Rants at related • 0 views

The latest in ridiculous transfer stories is the one about United's bid for Liverpool's Fernando Torres. Much as we rate the Spaniard, it's not a deal that makes sense. There's been talk about Liverpool's reported financial situation that will force Liverpool's hand. But let all that talk not fool you.

Ribery, Sanchez, Silva or Eto’o? Who will replace Ronaldo?!

Red Rants at related • 11 views

So Ronaldo has finally got his way and his extensively protracted move to Real Madrid is happening. To be honest I'm gutted that we're losing a truly terrific talent but then again the Madrid switch was an inevitability and in a way it's good that it's over without dragging on into the summer which gives us a chance to find apt replacements.

Breaking News: United accept 80m Ronaldo bid

Red Rants at related • 0 views

As reported on, Manchester United have accepted an unconditional 80m transfer bid from Real Madrid for Ronaldo. The decision was taken after the player requested the move again this summer and is expected to go through by the end of the month.

United will in all likelihood use the funds to bring in a winger and a striker as replacements for Ronaldo and the likely-to-depart Tevez, with Ribery and Benzema the two names most linked to United.

The Karim of the Crop?

With Carlos Tevez' future still hanging in the balance we've seen the names of  a couple of big-name strikers bandied about who are being mooted as potential replacements for the Argentine.

Over the next month or so I'll be providing you with regular transfer rumour updates as the merry-go-round that is the summer window in European football gets into full swing.

Manchester United 08/09 Season Review - Part III: The Defence

Red Rants at related • 0 views

In our concluding part of the three part series on our 2008/09 season we take a look at the most important component of our campaign the defence. A glance at our earlier two parts would give the impression that we've been a middling side with players averaging about 7. The defence would paint a much better picture mirroring the real reason behind our success.

Manchester United Season Review - Part II: The Midfield

Part II of this odyssey takes you to the realms of middle-earth, also known in modern times as the middle-field, or simply, midfield. The concept of the midfield here has been tweaked ever so slightly to consider only the positions in the centre of the park. The wings were covered in chapter one of this epic trilogy, so kindly proceed here to read it in case you haven't.

Manchester United 08/09 Season Review - Part I: The Attack

Red Rants at related • 3 views

With transfer rumours in full tilt, let's behave like nothing is happening in the world around us apart from acknowledging that Roger Federer is destiny's only child and decide to look at the world that happened in the past year.

Since this is a trilogy with a chance of a bonus part; either, for purposes of completeness, or due to the commercial success of said trilogy we will devote a post each for attack, midfield and defence.

Manchester United get Aon Money

As reported in most dailies around, United have finally got a shirt sponsor on board to replace AIG. What's with the club's recent obsession with insurance companies, really? I guess the answer is £s;80m

Anyway, the facts...

Aon Corporation, founded in 1919 is a firm that specializes in insurance and risk management; which sounds to me like saving the insurance companies when they do something potty.

On that note, enjoy your Wednesday.
