Arsenal 0-1 Manchester City: Money Wins As Gutsy Gunners Eventually Lose Out.

The Offside - Arsenal at related • 1 view

I'm proud of the team today.

An Arsenal side composed mostly of our youth players and our second string benchwarmers did much better than anybody expected, outplaying a "reserve" Man City side that still had the likes of Nasri, Dzeko, Aguero, Johnson, and De Jong on the pitch and which likely cost more to assemble than 15 first XI's in the EPL.

Gimme a minute, I'm just shoveling coal into the Liveblog 3000. It's a bit clunky this morning (afternoon/evening for many of you). Nothing a cuppa won't fix, mind. *pauses, thinks...* Gimme a minute, I'm just shoveling tea into the Liveblog 3000.

If you haven't read it, then you should run, don't walk, to Darren's preview of this match.

We at Arsenal Offside would like offer our condolences to the family and friends of Gary Speed in light of his the news that he has taken his own life yesterday. Arsene Wenger offered his own message on the Arsenal website saying:

"It was a shock of course. I did not know him very well as a person but you did not like to see him on the team against you.

Arsenal 1 – Fulham 1 : Vermaelen Scores for Both Teams as Winning Streak is Snapped

The Offside - Arsenal at related • 0 views

Well that was no fun. Despite outplaying Fulham, luck was not on our side today, and we dropped two important points at home. Credit goes to Schwarzer in particular for keeping them in it, while RvP's prowess around the goal finally let him down today. Vermaelen was the goat for his howler of an own goal, but he gained a measure of redemption with a header to level things late.

Well it's that time again. Time to put our winning streak on the line against Fulham. I just watched the rather remarkable end to the Man Utd/Newcastle game, where luck and the refs worked against Man Utd at the end, which is odd. We didn't get any help from Chelsea or Spurs, so we still need three points here to keep up with them.

Arsenal continue their decent into the relegation zone after another disastrous Champions League match where they once again showed their defensive frailties and lack of mental strength and character, and facing the stalwart Fulham FC will offer no let up to the North London crisis situation.

Top of the group, baby! Arsenal 2-1 Dortmund

The Offside - Arsenal at related • 1 view

And with that, our official season-in-crisis reaches new heights. A paltry first place in our Champions League group and the top striker on the planet. Worst start in 58 years and we're even with Spurs and they're having they're best start in 47.*

Anyway, first a picture, then on to the match report:

* I read that somewhere.

Arsenal (in the colloquial) means an array of weapons. I wish we had more than RvP banging them in, but it sounds about right to me.

Dortmund, on the other hand, to me* is a beer. I u-brewed a "Dortmunder" a few months ago. So, while beer is a powerful and beautiful thing, it is nothing compared to an array of weapons, right?

Who's ready for a good old fashioned England-Germany turf war?

With City at the hands of the Footballing Gods after their 1-2 loss to Napoli, United not so good themselves after their 2 Hilarious Mistakes-2 Benfica draw at Old Trafford, and Chelsea sucking right now, it's fair to say that England haven't exactly covered themselves in glory in Europe this season.

Norwich 1-2 Arsenal: A Nervy Win That Signifies Progress

Grant Holt is fat. End of story.

Coming into this match, a lot of the regulars here were genuinely worried about how we would dispose of Norwich. All of the promoted clubs have done very well so far in the EPL, and Norwich have been arguably the best of the bunch. And the conditions for this match were less than convincing: We're normally shaky after Interlulls, and we are absolutely abysmal on the road after Interlulls- a stat on the official site read that we've only won about 41% of our EPL away games right after Interlulls.

Norwich – Arsenal Preview, Plus Some Team Notes

We're finally back to some league action again after the two week hiatus. I guess in England they'd call that a fortnight. Anyway, we're off to the east coast of England to take on Norwich at Carrow Road in an early morning (North American time) tilt.

Before I get to the official preview, let's check in on some injury notes.

Thoughts on a European Super League

I really just thought of writing about this topic this morning, as I came across an article with some recent quotes from Sandro Rosell from Barcelona. He's apparently sad that Barca can't make enough money under the current structures of La Liga and the Champions League. From his quotes, I believe what he wants is for the major domestic leagues to reduce their number of clubs.

[Editor's Note: This is another installment from Orion, to help us through the interlull. And to be clear, the Homey Train is still stubbornly cruising along, but without very many passengers at the moment.]

So I was staring at the screen, waiting for an idea to strike me from some abyss in my mind.

Well I enjoyed a nice little layoff over the last week and a half, or however long it's been since I wrote something. I wasn't out of town, but did have more real work to do than normal. Kudos to Darren for doing the heavy lifting over the last week.

Anyway, we've been treated to another round of mostly meaningless internationals in the last few days.

Is The Guardian Doing The Right Thing?

What are the effects of "offering" free employment?

On Wednesday, one of Britain's longest running and highly respect newspapers, The Guardian, announced a new, bold idea for its sport section of its website, . The concept, the Guardian Sports Network, would basically establish a sort of partnership between Guardian Sport and a selected number of sport blogs (most of which are centered on soccer/football).

In Flanders fields

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place: and in the sky
The larks still bravely singing fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the dead: Short days ago,
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved: and now we lie
In Flanders fields!

Main-Stream Media. Out To Troll You

There was a time where the entire world relied on Journalists for the news. World news, local new, fashion updates, entertainment and sports, if you needed to know something about anything that interested you, you went to the media in its various forms to get the latest. The radio would give you the most up to date news in brief fashion, and the newspaper would give you the in-depth version on your kitchen table with your breakfast before work.

Interlull Injury Watch

The Offside - Arsenal at related • 1 view

We can look at this international break in a couple of ways. The typical way is to curse and swear and moan that all our world class players Robin van Persie is away with their national squads to play football and get injured, while Arsenal pay the wages and have to endure weeks without the player due to injury and/or fatigue.

A nice, routine win. Haven't seen those in a while.

Coming into this game, there was a feeling of dread among many of the fans, particularly on Twitter. As I mentioned on the preview, the stage was set for Arsenal to have another meltdown and erase all of their good work leading up to today by losing this one.

I'm really not an expert on Arsenal trivia. Some fans seem to be. In fact, I could pose the following question: "What happened when we hosted Birmingham in league play two seasons ago?" And some fans could answer, "Oh yes, that's the game that we won 3-1, on goals by RvP, Diaby (remember him), and Arshavin.
