The Year In Song

0
THE YEAR IN REVIEW - 2007 First we had a couple of months ending in "ary," then a couple of months starting with "M" with April in between, then another couple of J's, August, and then a string of "ber" months. Mostly "embers," one "ober." Oh, and it started out cold, got real hot, [...] Click to continue reading...

Walk-in closets

1
A while back Culture of Soccer, DCenters, and Sideline Views - probably others - talked about gay athletes and homophobia. I wrote this post, didn't really think I hit what I wanted to say, kept it around as a draft, and, well, we're in the holiday doldrums (at least in this country), so here it [... USMNT Hero of 2002 returns

Cruising Soccernet, and what do you know, I hear news about an old friend. Park Ji-sung, of course, was the man whose goal against Portugal turned a World Cup first round choke job into a chance for glory. He's recovered from injury, and has rocketed up to fourth or fifth on the Manchester United depth [. Patchwork Orange

I worry that thousands of years from now, future generations studying MLS will misunderstand the Earthquakes 2.0/Dynamo* dynasty. So much so, that it's difficult to accept that they even ARE a dynasty. Consistent championships over the course of several years, sure, but it's how they did it that's both inspiring and baffling. The end is near

On January 1 this site becomes either a redirect or a 404. *cheers* But, www.danloney.com is pretty much ready. *groans* I'll try to cross-post between here and there from now until this blog goes dark. Well, maybe not this particular post, since it's kinda boring. But, if I'm saying something interesting. Click to continue reading...

Little what if for you. Let's say Solo stayed out all night, and showed up to practice the next day completely hung over. Do you start Briana Scurry the next game? Click to continue reading...

Dry the rain

Okay, this is what danloney.com is looking like at the moment. I want it to be a site you can view at work without the boss suspecting. Anyone feel like beta-testing this puppy? Criticism is welcome, if you also assume I have no idea how to fix it and are willing to [...] Click to continue reading...

Shut up, Greg Ryan, please, just shut up

Sorry, can't really get any cleverness into my reaction to this: "When you look back and say, 'Life would have been a lot easier if I had just let Hope fail against Brazil.' Because I think that's what would have happened. I think we actually would have given up more goals with Hope in there than [.. Click to continue reading...

Meet the new blog, same as the old blog

Okay. The new address is going to be www.danloney.com. As you can tell, I put a LOT of thought into it. Nothing there yet to speak of, though. But it's never too soon to update your bookmarks, even though it's probably too soon to update your bookmarks. What, you wanted rigid timetables? This [.. Click to continue reading...

CONCACAF Players of the Year - updated standings

1
Hm...Pavel Pardo, captain [edit - or not, but he was a pretty key player] of a Bundesliga-winning side. Miguel Calero, leader of all-conquering (until this fall) Pachuca. Man, that's a tough one. I could call it a tie, except there's only one person voting. It's lonely at the top. On the women's [. Click to continue reading...

Really, it’s an honor just to be nominated

The USSF has decided what was best in soccer, and this year's best blog is Steven Goff. Congratulations! Ives Galarcep with the silver. No problem. I've got a huge problem with the third place pick, though. Here - go back and read for yourself. If that was the third best blog in the [...] Click to continue reading...

The Anti-Lysistrata

Interesting tidbit from the Women's Soccer USA blog. One of the underreported soccer stories going on today is the all-out war between the USL and the WPSL for supreme dominance of American women's club soccer. I exaggerate but little - from my admittedly limited experience, each league looks down on the other. Click to continue reading...

That 70’s League

0
Steve Davis, in a special for MLSnet: Essentially, each team will have the flexibility to add one additional foreign player. Previously, teams were allotted seven international spots, four categorized as Senior Internationals and three as Youth Internationals. Now each club may have eight internationals, which no longer will be split into "Youth" or "Senior" designations. Click to continue reading...
